I bought this as a replacement of my first automated litterbox, the Petmate Purrformat Plus XL. That one was awful, this one is great.
The rake on this litterbox actually switches the direction it points as it moves to the front and back to the rear of the box. The net effect is that, unlike the Petmate, you don’t get a wall of litter at the rear of the box. The litter is evenly distributed along the bottom every time and the rake is able to return to its starting point every time unlike the Petmate.
As it sweeps forward, the purple part rises up and the rake pushes anything it has caught underneath it. Underneath the purple part is more Fresh Step litter, so when it closes down it traps the odor so the Fresh Step can absorb it. Simple!
Furthermore, this one is much more quiet than the Petmate. The Petmate sounded like a remote controlled tank but this one just has a gentle hum to it, and it completes the task of sweeping in about 1/2 to 1/3 the time the Petmate takes, too.
My 2 1/2 month old kitten took to it like a duck to water. She kind of thinks it’s a toy right now but she also knows what it’s there for.
We had mechanical problems with both self-cleaning boxes we had tried. They apparently just couldn’t handle three cats.
So far, the SccopFree box is working perfectly, with very little odor, for the same three cats.
It’s well and simply engineered, and although it has a higher ongoing cost than others, it’s worth that higher cost for us.
Nov ‘06–My cat is a 13 pounder, poops about 5 times a day–and boy does it stink! I feel that cleaning a cat box several times a day is a real pain, but then so is cleaning it up off the basement rug every day if I dont clean the box soon enough for “his highness”! This thing is GREAT! Ok, I’ve only had it for 5 days now, and it specifically says on the box that for larger cats or multiple cats, the cartrige will NOT last 30 days–the container is full (like I said, he poops A LOT) BUT!! I really dont mind taking the scoop and scooping out the container once a week–I have to do this because replacement cartriges are $15 or so (that’s the really bad part) I still have to see if it will take all his urine for 30 days, but in the mean time: The smell is gone, he doesnt track litter everywhere (I used clumping before and he left a real mess–along with the smell) just a few of the crystals get on the floor, I dont have to clean the box daily (as well as the basement carpet), and it works. One thing to note, I did not realize how BIG the thing is, and I also didnt think about plugging it in–so you may have to revise where you put it. Also, it’s not perfect–some of the poop got behind the rake, and got stuck, but whoopie, no big deal to take a piece of toilet paper, and pull it off. I may look into reusing cartriges (waxed cardboard boxes with scoop free crystals dumped into it) and adding crystals from a bottle, but that may not be possible, because waxed cardboard can only take so much wetness–but that may be an option. I think a bottle of the stuff is around $15 too, but you may get 2 or 3 uses out of it, rather than just the one.
**update**1 1/2 months–I still love it. It lasts about 14 days, with a once per week clean out of the poop trap. The crystals never smells like urine, but there is a smell after that amount of time (big cat). cant use a litter liner as the rake can get stuck–or kitty’s nails, so I’m still working on a way to refill more cheaply–but no more “accidents” on the carpet.
We have had 7 cats over the past decade (not all at once thank heavens!) and thats a lot of scooping. Right now we only have one cat, but he is incredibly sensitive to a dirty litterbox. It’s gotten to the point he wants it absolutely clean every time he needs to use it, which is an impossible task. He’ll actually sit outside the box and meow until someone takes care of it! We’ve been considering an easier method for some time to get the job done. So, we purchased the Scoopfree litterbox two weeks ago after reading numerous reviews of the different automatic litterboxes on the market. This one seemed to make the most sense because it does not use clumping litter, which I’ve read often sticks to the rake device and liquids pass down to the bottom of the litter, never fully drying/clumping. I had never used crystals, but after reading how they absorb liquids and odors I was willing to give it a test drive.
We paid $99 after price searching the web. The device arrives in a HUGE box, but in reality seems to be the size of a large litter pan. Setup was quick and easy. We placed the Scoopfree in the same spot as the old litterbox, removing that one out of the house. This was a bold step since our cat hadn’t used crystals and I was afraid he might be confused. He did notice the difference and inspected it completely, but has proceeded to use the device with no problems.
He’s a large cat (about 16lbs – and not overweight) and fits the box. The motor isn’t loud – we can’t hear it from another room in our house. The raking cycle doesn’t take long, only about a minute. The crystals are working terrific, absorbing the liquids and odors just as indicated. Another bonus is the freedom from the litter dust that gets scattered and tracked. I’ve only seen a few crystals kicked out in two weeks, so that’s saved on additional sweeping around the box. A few days ago the kitty blocked the optical sensor with a pile of crystals from his insane covering, so the rake didn’t scoop automatically. This was solved by pressing the button to manually scoop. Since then we give the box a quick look once a day to make sure it’s clean and working. The cardboard cartridge is holding up, although I have heard that some cats dig to the point of scratching the bottom, which may cause a leak or tear. Ours doesn’t have that problem, but before we placed the cartridge we covered it with a garbage bag for added protection. We then put it under the Scoopfree as directed and filled it with crystals. This hasn’t impaired the device from functioning and I think will lead to an extended cartridge life (which is a benefit since we are on a budget).
Two factors to consider with this device are that the hood and refill cartridges are sold separately. The cartridges are a little on the expensive side depending on where you can find them ranging from $12 to $17. A cartridge is determined to last one month for one cat.
Overall we are really happy with the Scoopfree. It does have a 90 day money back guarantee and a 1 year warranty. It has been super easy to use and has already saved quite a bit of time in terms of scooping and cleaning. Our cat is really happy and no more meowing at the box, which is a great relief to us. We would definitely recommend it to everyone.
I have three cats, and have been using this product for about a year and a half. One of my cats is 14 years old, and I’ve tried several of the self-cleaning litter boxes over the years. None of them comes close to this litter box. This product is, without question, the best litter box I’ve ever used. Bar none.
Here’s how it works. The cat enters the box, and a “safety” catch goes on so that the box won’t try to clean itself while the cat is using the box. If the cat goes #1, the Fresh Step brand litter crystals absorb and deodorize the urine. The litter box runs it’s “rake” through the crystals, and settles the disturbed crystals (because our cats will paw and dig and cover their waste) so that they are flat again. Because the urine is absorbed, it’s not clumped (as it is with clay), and therefore doesn’t create extra waste that a receptacle will be burdened by. If the cat goes #2, the box waits for about 20 minutes, and then sweeps the waste under a lid that, when closed, virtually eliminates all odors.
Using clay drove me crazy, because the receptacle was burdened far more by urine than by feces, and required constant changing. Without the extra burden of clumped urine, maintenance is very, very low.
The crystals come in a cartridge specifically constructed for this unit. As of this writing, they’re a tad expensive, but they are well worth it. If you have one cat, you probably won’t have to worry about changing the cartridge for one month. I have three cats, using two Scoop Free Self-Cleaning Litter Boxes, and I change the cartridges every two weeks.
Also, for an added bonus, the company that makes this product is very easy to work with. Great customer service; they’ll bend over backwards to satisfy their customers.
I give the Scoop Free litter box a rating of “5 stars” for me. We have three cats and two litter boxes. The Scoop Free and a conventional, (scoop to clean) box. Our cats have 2 (constant water flowing) sources. They drink a LOT of water. Hence, they “P” a lot. The urine in the box is the biggest problem for ANY litter device. Our standard box must be scooped every 2 days and it does smell (we keep that one in the basement). The Scoop Free will last 7-8 days. It does not smell, even when the cats are pooping. The rake stays clean and is quick and quiet when raking. If we did not have the abundant water source, that the cats love, I think the Scoop Free box would last 2-3 more days. This system will cost you more, to use, than other auto boxes which use regular litter. But the features of no smell, quiet operation, and ease of cleaning (none), is worth it for me. I have owned other auto litter boxes, Litter Sweep by Stylette, and LitterMaid, and choose the Scoop Free to be the best. I by my Scoop Free litter box refills from Amazon because they offer free shipping. K.J. Collegeville,Pa.
We ordered the Scoop Free Self-Cleaning Litter Box about three weeks ago for our 2 one-year-old cats. I was hoping to 1) stop scooping litter daily, and 2) leave on short vacations without hiring a pet-sitter.
TRANSITION
For a week I left the Scoop-Free unit next to their clay litter box, but they didn’t use it. I sprinkled some clay litter over the Scoop-Free crystals during this period to help the transition. After that first week I quit scooping the old litter to encourage the transition. After a few days of dirty clay litter they still wouldn’t use the Scoop-Free. So I took the clay litter away. They began using the Scoop-Free over the next 24hrs and have had no incidents.
HOW IT HAS WORKED OUT
The unit works great. For two weeks now I have not scooped litter. I’ve only touched the unit once, to replace the refill (lasts almost 2 weeks with two 12LB cats). It is always clean, and it controls odors very well (doesn’t immediately hide a new odor, but gets it under control soon). I took another reviewer’s advice and check the green light daily, to make sure the sensors aren’t blocked. The sensors haven’t been blocked yet and our cats throw litter athletically.
SUMMARY
This is worth the moderately increased ongoing costs. I will gladly replace the crystal refill unit every two weeks, rather than scoop litter daily. By using this litter box, along with food and water dispensers with large reservoirs, we no longer have to service the cats daily. We just enjoy their company and check in on their food/water/litter periodically. We can also leave the house for a few days without a petsitter, although I may buy a second unit as a backup (in case there is a blockage while we’re out). Overall I would HIGHLY recommend this system. Just ordered more refills today.

Update, posted December 16, 2007:
After using the LB1 for four months, I still think it’s the best litterbox we’ve used in the 10 years of living with cats; which is not to say it’s perfect. It’s big advantage is how easy it is to maintain and keep clean. It’s big drawback is how often the expensive crystal litter has to be replaced.
On the plus side: It doesn’t have to be cleaned several times a day, as did the plain $4 litter box, nor unjammed and cleaned frequently, as did the LitterMaid; and it controls odor reasonably well (we keep it in the garage, without a hood. If it were in the house, I’d definitely use the hood, but don’t know if that would suffice).
It does have to be checked every day, because it sometimes needs some help. When that happens, it’s still MUCH quicker and easier than dealing with a plain litterbox or a LitterMaid. Cleaning it is trivially easy, and that’s important to me. If you use the disposable cartridges, there’s virtually no cleaning to be done, ever. The rake doesn’t foul the way other mechanical litterboxes do, and the only time I “cleaned” the rake, it was by wiping it with a damp cloth for about a minute. That may have been overkill.
I use the “Forever tray”, and it usually doesn’t need any cleaning, not even wiping down, when replacing the litter. When it did seem to need cleaning, just hosing it down was sufficient: afterwards, there was no visible residual and no oder at all. I remember spending over a half-hour every month or two trying to clean the LitterMaid, and never could really get it clean. So, for ease-of-use, this is in a class by itself.
On the downside: With two cats, it’s a stretch to make the litter last 2 weeks: 10 days is closer to reality. In winter, with cold, humid air, the liquids do not evaporate quickly, so it isn’t as good as in the summer. The litter is much more expensive than scoopable litter: I’m using the “Forever” tray (a “must” if you use the LB1 at all), and an 8-pound bag of crystal litter at Target is $13. The tray holds 1/2 a bag, so it’s costing $6.50 (plus tax, of course) for 10 days, or about $20/month. (With the official disposable “cartridges”, it would be costing $50/month.) By contrast, scoopable litter probably cost about $4/month, or even less, but required a lot more maintenance and produced more odor.
So, I’m glad we have it, and wish the crystal litter cost much less.

Original review, posted August 18, 2007:
We’ve had cats for about ten years, and have tried a variety of manual and automatic litter boxes, but never have been satisfied with them.
Several years ago, I tried both sizes of LitterMaid (original and then Mega), but neither worked well: they jammed, they fouled, they required a lot more work than a plain litter box, and there was always a big mess surrounding them. The monthly cleaning was time-consuming and unpleasant, and after a few months, the rake seemed to foul more often than not.
I tried the Omega Paw RA20 (sold at Amazon). Only one of my cats was willing to use it, and, because it has to be rolled upside down to remove the clumps, it needs about six feet of floor space. Cleaning it turned out to be harder than I’d thought it would be.
I went back to a big manual litterbox with a built-in scoop, and although it was the best “manual” solution I ever found, with two indoor cats, I still had to clean it out several times a day. The litter boxes were always in the garage, so the garage always had a bit of an unpleasant odor.
A month ago, I saw the glowing reviews of the Scoop Free LB1 at Amazon. They sounded too good to be true, but I ordered it anyway.
Those glowing reviews were simple statements of the truth: this litter box just works. The design is simple and clever, setting up and maintaining it is easy, and there’s less mess or odor than from any other litter box we’ve tried in the last ten years. It isn’t as maintenance-free as the manufacturer says, but checking it daily, clearing out the poop every few days, and redistributing the crystals seems to be sufficient.
The obvious drawback is the high on-going maintenance cost: with two indoor cats, the crystal litter and the cardboard trays must be replaced every two weeks. At Amazon’s current price, that works out to $450 a year. By contrast, traditional clumping clay litter probably costs less than $45 a year.
Fortunately, the reviews here also mentioned a less expensive solution: the “Forever Litter Tray”, sold on eBay for about $60 plus $10 shipping. It’s a permanent plastic tray that replaces the disposable cardboard trays, and it works even better than the cardboard trays.
If you use the “Forever” tray, you have to buy the crystal litter separately: 8 pounds of “Fresh Step Crystals” sells for $12-$17 (Target has the best price), and the tray needs about 4 pounds at a time. So, it may be possible to spend “only” $150 a year on litter, if you shop around. That’s $100 more than clay litter for the year.
This approach (LB1 plus “Forever tray”) obviously costs more than a manual litter box ($180 more, up front, plus an extra $100 a year for crystal litter). The benefits are: 1) much less work; 2) much less mess; 3) much less odor.
To me, it’s well worth the price.
We have a very large male cat who has had no problems with this litter box. As an adult cat we feared he wouldn’t take to an automatic litterbox but the addition of our son has taken so much of our time. No problems out of the box and it is 2 weeks later. He was interested in the noise and movement at first but has overcome the curiosity of it all. We live in an apartment with little room for the box so it is in our bedroom. The noise is very liveable for us. It only take about a minute for the cleaning to take place. The litter box is approx. 5 ft from the bed. I love this box and highly recommend it.
I have an abyssinian and a tonkinese. This litter box accomodates them both…I change it about every 10 days and it is truly wobderful if you hate to clean the litter box. The automatic rake kicks in after they leave the box and scoops the stinky stuff into the cartridge.
No more smell.
This is an excellent product, well worth the money spent. I love my cats, but cleaning the litter box had become a dreaded smelly, messy chore. I decided it was time to get an automatic litter box. I carefully researched the different brands, and ScoopFree was getting the best customer reviews. Add me to the list of satisfied customers, because ScoopFree works just as it claims. My oldest and most fastidious cat took to the box immediately. My youngest cat was a little afraid of it at first, but I put her in the box several times, petting her head, and talking softly to her, until she realized it was safe. This took three days, and I left a disposable litter box beside the new ScoopFree box, but with only a small amount of litter in it. As the disposable box began to fill, the youngest cat began to complain vocally. I put her in the ScoopFree box again, talked to her and pushed her paw around in the crystals. Finally, she accepted it, and is now using it with no more problems. It’s really great because not only do I not have to clean the box every day, but there’s no smell. I couldn’t be more pleased with this product. I highly recommend it.
We purchased this box for a finicky cat that we suspected refused to use the box if it wasn’t clean. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the problem and this box didn’t correct his behavior issue – however our other female loves it and so do I. It is very quiet – you can hear it, but it is not obnoxious. My female was 7 years old and had no problem making an immediate adjustment. In fact, she’s fascinated and waits to watch the box in operation after she uses it. I empty it every 30 days (she’s a small cat). The box stays very clean, the rake stays clean. I’ve used the box for over 6 month now and have not had one poop clump on the rake like the Littermaid we owned (and discarded) previously. The refills are expensive, but the convenience and cleanliness is just worth it to me. We NEVER smell this box. We travel frequently and I don’t have to worry about the cat being on her own, even for several days at a time.
Tips:
The cardboard boxes can leak, especially if your cat likes to use one corner of the box like mine. I keep the whole set up on a water proof door mat. I also use the cardboard that comes in the refill cartridges in the bottom of the container top (it has to have about and inch or 2 trimmed to fit), then place the bottom box inside on the cardboard, and I put a piece of wax paper in the bottom of the box directly under the crystals.
My cat tends to make a pile of crystals in her favorite corner. This is a large pile (every crystal in the box) and it tricks the sensor by making it think the cat is in the box. I have to shake it or rake it to redistribut the crystals, then the box works fine. You can tell if it’s “hung up” by rapid blinking of the sensor light. You can also manually initiate the rake, but it won’t redistribute equally across the box.
My cat also pushes some crystals out of the box, and with the crystals that get swept into the poop containment center, we run low on crystals by the mid-end of the month. I mark the top of the box where the crystals are when the new cartridge is installed – like a fill line, then add crystals as needed to keep this amount. This also cuts down on leaking (when I remember to do it regularly), and probably is responsible for zero odor.
I have two toddlers, and a lot going on – I don’t like to fuss over a litter box regularly, and this is perfect. I spend about 20 minutes a month on it – total. That includes vacuuming around the box, wiping it down with disinfecting wipes (all that is needed), setting up the new cartridge and disposing of the old, and the occasionally shake and top off during the month. Each cat has it’s different quirks – so making it work “perfectly” for your family may take a couple tries to figure out. Overall, use is simple.
This product is ten times better than the LitterMaid. It’s quiet, easy to use and odor-free. You really don’t have to touch it for at least 3 weeks. The only drawback is that the cartridges are a little expensive, but it’s well worth it to avoid constant litter box clean-up.
I have gone through at least 3 generations of the Littermaid automatic systems with all their distastful problems: clumping, sticky urine, odor problems, scattering of litter etc. When a new kitten brought our cat number up to 3, the Littermaid system became downright disgusting even when changed daily (which was a real chore). So, I tried the Scoopfree LT1 System – and wished that I had done so long ago. The Scoopfree System is the cleanest litter solution I have ever had. The replacement units are expensive because I change them every 4 days, but with many little grandchildren around I need a really clean system. Changing these units is a breeze. Odor and scattering is not a problem. Clumping, pooling urine is not a problem. The rake stays clean. This is a superior product.
I’ve read reviews of automatic litter boxes that didn’t work well – so far I really like this one. Its not too noisy, the cats used it immediately and all came running to watch when it turned on to clean. I have six cats, 4 litter boxes, this one was their favorite since it arrived. I’ve had it for over a week and will probably clean it in a day or so. I’m getting one more and hoping to eliminate two others and lots of scooping. My cats were already used to crystal litter – and this is only about the 10th day so don’t know how they hold up.
This litter box is awesome!!! Far less maint. then either of the LitterMaid Mega’s it replaced. With this box I only need to stir the litter every few days, it’s never jammed, it’s never left any poop in the box or stuck to the rake (a big problem with the LitterMaid). It’s quiet, the large crystals don’t track all over the house like clumping litter did. I can’t smell this box from across the room until it’s time to change the cartridge (3 weeks for my cat). So after three years with LitterMaid boxes (first lasted 1 year, second went for 2), twice a week changes of the waste recepticles, monthly disassembly for cleaning (including removing the screws that hold the rake), many attempts to find the “perfect” litter to use in the LM (EverClean works the best), I’ve finally found something much better!!! I’m just glad I looked at the reviews online before I ran out to buy another LitterMaid. I was excited about the metal rakes on the new LM elite and thought it would be easier to clean but the reviews showed these new models are having more trouble then the older models I owned.
On paper the Scoop Free sounds like it will be more expensive to own then the LitterMaid but my few years with the LM shows me that I was spending about the same per month or more on supplies then the Scoop Free will cost me. Scoop Free will cost me $15.99 every three weeks for a refill (18 (really 17.3) refills/year = approx $287). The LitterMaid was $18/month for EverClean litter, 2 waste recepticles/month @ $1.25ea = approx $246). Sure you can use cheaper litter in the LM box but I tried a bunch and nothing cheaper made me happy. Add in extra $$$ for the littermaid if plan to the use the charcoal flters which are useless IMHO.
The Scoop Free doesn’t require you to touch any part with cat waste on it for normal maint and cleaning. Unfortunately (for me) the LitterMaid’s I used for 3 years did require (at least) twice weekly contact with the cat waste to change the recepticle plus the montly disassembly for cleaning (gross). I liked the LitterMaid, I love the Scoop Free.
This is absolutely a wonderful, self-cleaning cat box! We purchased this item a few months ago for our 3 month old kitten, as we were going to be away for a few days. This product works great… Here’s the pro’s and con’s of this device.
PRO’S:
- Light weight and can easily be picked up.
- It’s very quiet. (In other words, it doesn’t upset the kitty with loud crashing and banging noises, etc.)
- It works well. There’s a small, metal rake that scoops across 20 minutes after the kitty uses the box.
- Uses a sensor to detect the last time the kitty was in the box. After 20 minutes of inactivity, it cleans itself and doesn’t leave “messes” in the box.
- The crystals quickly dry up the “buried treasure”, which keeps them from smelling!
CON’S:
- The company wants you to buy new “cartridge”, which is nothing more than a plain cardboard box that the self-cleaning machine sits on top of. The cartridge costs approximately $15 dollars each and you have to replace it once a month in order to keep it smelling nice. If you have multiple-cats, the cost can get prohibitive, as you’ll probably be buying a fresh cartridge once a week. It is simply designed for one cat ONLY. (We just simply use a big, black plastic garbage bag as the liner and that works great! We can reuse this cardboard box over and over and over again, which saves money!) If you don’t use a liner, the urine will soak into the cardboard box, which can cause it to start smelling.
- The crystals come with the cartridge that the company tries to sell. However, if you don’t want to buy a new cartridge every month, you can save money by simply purchasing new FreshStep crystals. A 25 lbs. bag costs approximately $12 to $15 dollars at Walmart. The cartridge uses approximately 8 lbs of crystal each month. These can sometimes be hard to find, as Walmart sells out of them quickly!!)
- The crystals soak up moisture from the feces and urine, so they can start to smell overtime, if you don’t change them at least once a month. With our active kitten, we wound up having to change them once a week, as a smell started to develop with her frequent usage!
- The tray is kind of large and bulky. Make sure you have an electrical output nearby and the ability to hid the electrical cord. Our kitten likes to play (and chew) on anything that looks like a string, and that includes electrical cords!
Hope this helps!
I have tried other autoscoopers but they are noisy, jam up, or don’t control odor. This one is great! I have 6 cats and I am so glad I bought this. I am very impressed with the odor control this litter box has! I loved it so much I bought a second one for the downstairs.
Worth the money for the box but the refill trays are expensive. I did find a way to cut refill expenses – I dump the used contents in a trash bag and refill with the 4 lbs litter bags (about $3). It defeats the purpose of hands-off litter box but saves on the refill expense. The bottom of these trays are very durable and can last more than 10 refills this way.
If I am lazy, I just refill with the easy refill trays. Either way, worth the money and lack of odor. It is a lot quieter than other autoboxes too.
I had a Littermaid literbox for the past seven years. Sure it had it’s flaws, but it did what I wanted it to, scoop litter. All I had to do was empty the box and scrape off the bottom every now and then. After seven years, the motor started to act up and will just stop half-way through it’s route and sit there. Therefore I figured it was time to get a new one. Automatically I was about to purchase another Littermaid when I started reading the reviews. Everyone said the new one doesn’t work nearly as good as the old one. So I read the reviews of all of the other automatic litter boxes to see if they were all hated or if one was truely better than the rest. That is when I came across the Scoop Free litterbox. I was hesitant at first, since I’ve been using the same box for so long without any problems, but I figured I would try it knowing that Sccop Free had a money back guarantee.
As the reviews state, this thing is amazing! It only took a few minutes to set up. I only have great things to say:
- It’s smaller than my old box.
- It’s simple and not messy to clean.
- It uses crystals, which are heavier and harder to track around the house, so I don’t have clay litter all over my house.
- You don’t have to clean it very often (I have two cats and I’ve been changing it on the 15th and the last day of every month).
- There is absolutely no smell, which was my biggest concern.
- The motor is quieter than littermaid.
- There is nothing on the box to clean because you are throwing out the tray with the litter, so I don’t have to scrape out the bottom anymore.
- My cats took right to it. I didn’t feel like leaving out both litterboxes like they reccomend, so I sprinkled some of their old litter and pooh in the box and left it for a day before I turned on the box. My cats took right too it.
The only negative about this box, which I feel is greatly outweighed by the positives, is that the replacement litter is a bit more expensive than the giant containers of clay. Personally, I’d rather spend the money to have such a low maintenance, high quality product.
So, if you are debating on whether you should buy this or not, I highly reccomend you risk trying something new, like me, you’ll be glad you did. And if you don’t like it, ScoopFree will take it back!
I have one small cat who doesn’t eat much. ScoopFree lasts between 5 and 6 weeks a tray, so I guess I am lucky. Amazon prices for the trays are the best I have seen especially in the 6-pack. But it is expensive. It was probably about the same as using S’Wheat or other fancy litter though.
My cat has always used automatic boxes, but this was the first time for her to use crystals, so that took a bit of convincing. I could see that it could be challenging to get a cat who has not been exposed to either to like the box. Now she loves it.
I used various models of the Litter Maid and the quality got worse and worse over time. The last one lasted only three months before it broke.
ScoopFree has a very simple rake and mechanism, so it should break less if the electronics don’t fry or something. The trays have recently been improved and there is now a piece of plastic on the bottom of the tray that may fix the leaking and scratching problems some people experienced.
I have not had any leakage problems or scratch through problems. The litterbox smell is totally gone from my house, and I am amazed by that. I have had non-cat people smell my place and they say they can’t smell a thing either. I am so pleased with that. The littermaids always had a smell. After about 4 weeks I can smell the box a bit, but I know when it’s time to change trays because it will start smelling strong of amonia at about 5 weeks. The rake has been clean and unmessed up.
Apart from the cost of the trays, this product is as close to perfect I could ever expect from a litter box. One less unpleasant duty to perform around the house, and the place smells a lot better!
I have previously used the automatic litter maid boxes for years and after the second one broke down, I decided it was time for a change. Litter maid was far from ideal, but it beat the old fashioned manual scooping!!
After many hours of research and reading many reviews on different websites including this one- I decided to purchase the scoop free box. Immediately loved it! no odor detected and no daily scooping!! I have two cats and unfortunately the cartridges don’t last a month. Maybe two weeks until the compartment was full, but I simply scooped out the poo and some crystals and added more crystals. I say two weeks because I had to change the cartridge because the cardboard did become soaked w/ urine. This time around I actually lined the box w/self adhesive laminating paper that I had around, still going strong at four weeks w/ occasional scooping and addition of crystals. I’m planning to buy glad press ‘n seal (it was suggested in another review I read) and see if that will create a urine-proof barrier because laminating paper is expensive!!
I know the system isn’t perfect, especially w/ the cartridges being expensive, but you really don’t have to worry about the litter box for a week or so, which is fine w/ me. Plus, because the poo is dessicated it’s not a pain to scoop out and there is no odor!!
I always grew up with a cat and the thought of empting a litterbox was mindnumbing. Given I love my cat, but what comes out of her.. Well that is another story. Having recently adopted a kitten I found myself back in the pet arena. I talked around the get ideas with automated litterbox and narrowed it down between the Littermain and Scoopfree. I was sold on the Scoopfree (the idea of only emptying the litterbox once a month sold me). I have been using the box flawlessly. There is NO odor associated with the unit, and much to my surprise my kitten took right to it. It has a higher rim which helps contain the pellets, yet my 8 week old kitten has no trouble navigating in and out. Only drawback is a low hum when the unit self cleans after 20 minutes, however small price to pay to just plug it in and leave it.
High marks in my book! Bravo! Just cannot wait till they invent a litterbox that only needs maintence once a YEAR
Much better than the Littermaid. I had the Littermaid for maybe almost a year. I got tired of the messy waste disposal and all the spills. It also leaked litter between the main box and the clump bin. I lifted up the whole thing not expecting anything, and instead there was a speed bump looking thing of wet hardened clumping litter. The Scoop Free is wonderful. I have 1 adult cat, so I change it once a month or a little sooner than that if it starts to smell. The crystals work great, and changing the bottom tray is very easy and clean. I bought this because I’m pregnant and can’t change litter. With this I do not touch soiled litter, you throw away all the litter and the whole bottom tray which is coated cardboard, so I put on work gloves for precaution and change out the tray. It’s great!!!
WHAT A GREAT LITTERBOX!!! I’m free, FREE at last.
With 3 fat fluffies, a sore knee and sprained ankle, hauling litter down to the basement (40lbs each carton), stooping over to scoop 2 litter boxes(never often enough – per my surly kitties) and hauling old litter up to the garbage was just too much after 14 years. Each trip was a journey in fear and loathing as I suited up in a plastic pullover, put on latex gloves and dust mask. My loved one would shriek and run when she saw me because she feared I would snag her and make her do IT, and I would …sometimes…. if I could catch her.
The Scoop Free spares me all that. It dries out and segregates the little brown buddies into the hopper so that not only are you freed from the smell, but spared having to look at them hanging around the box. Talk about anxiety reduction and without prozac! Once the machine cycles, the box really looks just the way it does in the promotional pics.
So now it’s day 5 and there is no smell unless I open up the hopper containing the doggie chocolates.
I think the problem w/ machines using scooping litter is that the scooping litter is just too darn heavy and makes all these other machines break down that much sooner. The litter robot is huge and expensive and still requires heavy hauling. The littermaids seem to break down after about 1-2 years. While I’ve only had the Scoop Free for a week, I noticed that the scoop free machinery seems to be under little stress with the crystals and the rake stays clean, which means I don’t have to clean it.
Oh and the expensive cartridges? Permanent trays can be found on Ebay, just search under Scoop Free Forever Cartridge – not cheap but pays for itself – especially w/ multiple cats. Cheaper replacement crystals? Tidy Cat and other silica type litter will substitute just fine so long as the crysals are not too big for the rake.
If you use the disposeable cartridges you will never have to look at poo! Just tip the machine up, put the lid on the cartridge and out it goes. This bodes well for getting your teenager to help you or your friends to kitty sit while you go on vacation.
Go get this system, it’s a serious improvement to your quality of life, and, seriously, will enhance kitty adoption from shelters. With this around, I could consider getting another cat once my others leave.
UPDATE: 3/26/07
Each package of Fresh Step litter lasts at most 6 days w/ 2 cats. The reuseable tray is well constructed, but with each change, the wet litter clings to the reuseable tray. To avoid having to lift, pour out old litter, clean the tray and to prevent spillage, I did this: I laid a 30 gal. black trash bag under the tray and scoop free. I placed another 30 gal. trash bag on top of the tray (on its side unopened) to serve as a liner for the reuseable tray. When the litter is used up, I just wrap up the corners of the bag holding the litter, and empty. The bottom liner contains any excess spillage, and can be changed in a month or 2.
Suggest that the 30 gal. bags to be inserted as tray liner not be too thick – which can catch on the rake.
Update 6/12/07
Reality sets in!! Gave up on the garbage bag liners since they caught on the rake too often. Bottom line sundays/weds must clean out tray w/ rubber spatula-stinky! Switched to Walmart crystals $3.00 or so for 4lbs. Box regularly experiences some spillage over the sides so the urine control is not ideal compared to clay but still a lot less hauling required.
I’ve taken to lining the bottom of the box w/ newspaper over plastic garbage bag to catch spillage. I’m thinking of switch back to original cardboard cartridge since the cardboard helped absorb excess.
I’ve had my two Scoop Free litter boxes for three months. They’re the best thing that’s ever happened. They really work. I bought them after researching all the ones on the market. There is no odor and no mess. Since I have my apartment on the market, this is essential. I change the cartridges every two weeks (and have two boxes) because I have two large cats (18 and 14 pounds and a smaller 6-pounder). The cats adapted immediately. The little one (a very active 18-month-old) is fascinated. He hops in and out frequently to watch them work, so they also serve as an entertainment center for a rambunctious teen-ager. I wish they had been available years ago, after 30 years as an indoor-cat owner.
I love this machine. It truly makes litter less of a headache, I only wish the cartridges were cheaper. Has anyone experimented with adding your own fresh step crystals?
I have two cats, one who excretes a lot, one who doesn’t, and I have to change it about every 13 or 14 days. Usually on day 8 or 9 I go in and scoop out the poo from underneath the flap, and mix the crystals around. It lasts longer this way because some corners of the litter never get into the pee-absorbing mix.
As for the soggy problem mentioned by a number of other reviewers…I found my first cartridge lasted only about 8 days before I started seeing the box get soggy underneath. After this though, I haven’t seen any soaking through at all. My theory is that the cats were adjusting to the crystals, and were scratching up the cardboard underneath in the process. By exposing the cardboard underneath (they have sharp claws), any pee that is not immediately absorbed gets soaked into the box. If I were to recommend to others how to train their cats, I’d suggest putting crystals in their old box first (with only a thin layer of crystals) so that they know what it feels like to pee and poo in a shallow layer of crystals, and maybe get their cat’s claws trimmed.
Now my boxes don’t get all soaked, and so I wonder if I could just replace the crystals with fresh step crystals I get from the store? If the soggy box problem is the only thing holding it back, I don’t see why not. Will update if I ever get an answer to this.
UPDATE: So the big question I had when purchasing this system was whether or not I could lower my cost by refilling with crystals I buy at Wal-Mart. As a graduate student, I really don’t have the money to buy cartidges every couple of weeks (I’ve got two cats). This review is basically here to tell you that I’ve done it, and it works for me. YMMV.
As a first attempt, I simply threw away the old crystals and poo, and then filled it up with ~4 lbs. of fresh step crystals purchased at Wal-Mart/Target (much cheaper for an 8-lb bag or two refills). Of course if Amazon sold these, I’d buy from them any day.
Problem #1: Wet Cardboard. This is a documented problem with the system, as noted in my review above for the litter box, but I basically could only get two uses out of the cardboard box before the cat claws could pierce the bottom and cause soaking of the box in urine.
Solution #1: There is no complete solution for the wet box problem, unless you can tolerate an impressively disgusting urine stench. Luckily, Scoop Free improved their cartridge systems! Note that new cartridges come with a slight change to the cartridge that has improved its sturdiness. They have added a plastic sheet to the bottom of the cartridge to prevent cat claws from piercing the bottom and having the pee soak through to the bottom.
Great! Problem solved, right? Well, I then started experiencing Problem #2: a screeching noise during the raking that really sounded quite awful. At first I thought this was my fault, possibly overfilling the box and causing the machinery to operate with too much litter. That wasn’t the problem. The problem was that as the cats continued to use this cartridge (with plastic sheet), their claws would occassionally get under the plastic sheet and lift it up, causing litter to get underneath the plastic sheet. This plastic sheet would bulge up at the sides, and the raking mechanism would then start scraping the plastic surface as it raked, causing the screeching sound.
Solution #2: Now, for each new cartridge I use (I still use a new cartridge after about 2 or 3 refills), I use mailing tape (or duct tape) to tape down the edges of the plastic sheet. This takes some practice, but I have not experienced any screeching noises since.
Anyways, I hope this review helps! I also find the 3-pack of refills to be great because it qualifies for amazon prime 2-day service. The 6-pack does not have free shipping. Thanks, Amazon!
I have to say that I have tried almost all of the self-cleaning litter boxes out there for my Large Male 14year old cat. He has the electric water fountain for kitties and yes he does drink lot and lots of water, so you know what that means, yes, he pees a lot. Oh yea he is a larger (not fat) kitty so he eats a lot also, I aint sayin no more on that subject.
It has now been 25 AMAZING!!!!!! SCOOP/POOP/PEE CLUMP/URIN ODOR/POOP SMELL/LOTS & LOTS & LOTS OF ANOYING TRACKED SANDY LITTER …………………..FREE DAYS!!!!!
This is not saying that this litter box does not have any room for improvement, but I am one happier kitty owner. I will tell anyone that hates Doody & Pee Clump Duty, or that hates the tracked litter mess and nasty clumped up (metal or plastic) rake & plastic that never fits right storage container, get this litter box.
The main gripe I have with this litter box is the cost of the replacement crystal litter cartridges, but I have been told by numerous pet store owners and workers that there will probably be a generic competitor on the market soon which will hopefully bring the price of the litter cartridges down. One can only hope! But regardless, I am keeping this auto waste center for my cay.
The other gripe, but not major problem I have seen so far, is with the cardboard for the cartridge that the litter sits in. Now my cat, with a regular clumping litter box had clumps the size of softballs. After 25 days, there is, on the bottom of the inside tray, (not the bottom one that actually touches the floor and acts as the cover when you throw the thing out) a wet spot in the area that my cat likes to urinate at, apparently this is his favorite spot to pee. On the bottom cardboard tray (the one that touches the floor and acts as the cover when you throw the cartridge out) there is just the hint of a wet spot. I think that if they increase the wax content in the cardboard or if that is what is actually coating the cardboard this will help.
I have not had to realign the rake as other people have said they had to do. I do not smell any urine or poop and there is a lot of shrunken poop under that cardboard tray cover. I have minimal tracked crystal litter on the floor around and/or under the litter box. The motor is not as quiet as I would like, but then again it doesn’t bother me or wake anyone in my house up either, it is kept on a wooden floor right out side the bedroom door in a hallway.
If you are in the market for an almost maintenance free litter box for your cat, try this one. Like I said earlier, it’s not 100% perfect, but it is the best damn self cleaning, almost maintenance free litter box on the market. Not every kitty or human for that matter poops and pees that same, so if you don’t try it you will never know if it’s right for you and your kitty/kitties. Read all the rest of the reviews for this and other products and see what everyone is saying about all of them, make an educated decision
Good Luck.
After two frustrating years of another automated system, I tried this one out because it seemed to address the flaws of the other system. I have one cat who pees buckets and would pee right on the rake of the other system – clogging it all up with the clumping litter. No problem with this one at all – it has not clogged once. It is 100% quieter than the other automated box I had – I barely notice when this one starts up.
The cats took to it right away. I eventually bought the little tent you can put on top and now its even better – I hardly know its there at all.
I have 3 cats so I change the cartridge every 10 days and that seems to work. I don’t have to touch it at all in-between changes! I do keep the box on an absorbant towel to avoid any problem with leakage. It takes a couple of tries to figure out how long between box changes for your kitties. (You’ll know when you’ve left it too long because the bottom will get very soggy and a really nasty smell develops.) I can’t emphasize enough though – as long as you change it in time, there is almost no smell at all.
Yes, the running cost is much higher than the old fashioned manual way, and a little higher than most regular automatic litterboxes. The difference, however, is that this one works! I skipped all the instructions about leaving the old litter box next to the Scoopfree etc: I simply put the scoopfree where the old one was, took each of our 2 cats individually and dipped their paws in the new litter box and…end of story. Cats are smart, they know what to do. They still occasionally come look at the rake when it’s going, but they’re not afraid of it, just curious. The cartridges have lasted a good 2 weeks for me (with 2 cats), without any leakage issues. There is no odor and now we have that peace of mind that even when I leave for a weekend, our cats’ bathroom is always clean! Aside from the cost and the fact that it would seem you can only buy cartridges online, I can’t really think of any downsides to this unit.
It has been years since I have had a cat. I lived with 3 cats for 15 years and decided to get one ten years later after my oldest son turned 7. The one thing I was dreading the most was the litter box. Certainly I expected changes/advances in “litter management” in 10 years, but nothing prepared me for this Scoop Free Self-Cleaning Litter Box.
No Mess. No Smell. Works everytime. Clean it up once a week and keeps going great. Takes 5 minutes to change filter, box up and trash. Don’t even know I have a litter box sometimes (except when the mechanism activates in the middle of the night meaning my cat Yoshi took a bathroom break). End of story
I never leave reviews (this is my first) but let me say this, this box works! Now I know what 10 years of litter management technologies has come up with, and I like it.
This is an amazing product! We have four cats that are never outdoors. We have tried automatic litters before with very disappointing results. At one time we had two Litter Maid’s, but junked both of them. We had to buy the highest grade litter, and even then we were always getting material stuck to the teeth, and those receptacles were very expensive.
When I saw this it looked like it might really work, and with a ninety-day money-back guarantee, we decided to give it a try. They say you should have one for every two cats, but I was not going to invest in a second one until I was sure it was going to work as advertised.
We have had it for ten days and just changed the litter for the first time. They say it will last thirty days with one cat, and two weeks with two cats, so ten days for four cats is better than advertised. We are going to buy a second one the first chance we get and expect each to last about three weeks. The cartridges cost less than we were spending on litter alone before, and you can save even more by buying the six packs.
What makes this product so great is the fact that the litter absorbs the moisture rather than clumping, so you never have to add litter. When a cat leaves the litter a timer starts, and twenty minutes later the mechanism runs. This gives it enough time to dry out any loose soled waste, so it does not stick to the blades. We have has to remove some smaller solid waste that went through the blades and was behind them, but that is very minor.
When you need to change the litter all you have to do is remove the old tray, remove the lid from under the tray and put it back on. You can tape it closed, or slide the paper wrapping from the new tray back on, but neither are necessary. It just makes disposal a little neater. Then discard the whole thing. Then you remove the lid from the new tray and put it under the tray for later use. Then you slide the new tray into place, open the bag of litter that come with it and pour it into the tray. Then press the button to actuate the mechanism once to distribute the litter evenly, and forget it for another two weeks to a month depending on how many cats you have.
It’s so easy a caveman can do it. (snicker)
Update:
We now own a second Scoop Free and have had both for about a month. We are even more pleased now than we were when I first wrote this review. We find we use three cartridges a month. One in the one that gets used the least and two in the one that gets used the most. We have never had any problems with it except for one cartridge that did leak through, but I believe that was because we waited too long to change it. We also had a problem with the new cartridges getting warped out of shape while being stored, but that is because we were storing them on end. The weight of the litter will cause them to bow, so always store the cartridges flat and you will have no problem.
I cannot adequately express how much we like this product. [...].
This litterbox works as advertised. Newer refill cartridges now have a liquid-resistant liner, so the bottoms never get soaked like the old ones used to.
After owning ours for a while, the sensor started getting more and more dependent upon bright light in order to operate properly. It got to the point where the sensor light would always blink rapidly as if the sensor was obstructed unless the room was brightly lit. The problem was solved by using a can of compressed air to blow into the two holes on the interior side walls of the litterbox; that’s where the sensors are. The compressed air blew away whatever the obstruction was, and the litterbox once again operates smoothly even in a pitch-black room.
Life is good — life is sweet — and the days of that horrible Littermaid are behind me! The reviews just before mine (c deMoranville and Surfergurl say it all.
In response to shortcomings noted by others:
We haven’t had any leaks. Not one. With two cats. And we use the cartridge box twice to save a little money.
Customer Service is terrific.
When kitty builds a mountain of cyrstals with the litter, the sensor can be fooled into thinking a cat is still in the box, so occasional manual assistance is indeed necessary.
One reveiwer said she had to scoop out the solid waste box every few days. Something is wrong there. I’m wondering if pooch isn’t taking advantage of kitty’s box!
Many people have mentioned their cats running to watch the rake in action. It’s a hoot. My two run dash up to the side of the box, and sit there, mesmerized. The designers must have incorporated a tone in the motor that calls to them!
Every time I change the litter cartridge, I think, “One less bottle of wine in the budget this month.” And laugh. Because, hey, it’s worth it!
This is a great litter box and has redefined the litter box experience. No more dusty, nasty, sandy litter. The crystals work great and the box does too. I agree with others that you can’t really leave this untouched for 30 days..we regularly manually mix up the litter and about every 4 or 5 days, we clean out the receptical. I have found a way to extend the life of the cartridges..by buying a bag of the Fresh Step crystals (Target carries this). At the end of the month, we just empty the crystals from the cartridge in a trash bag and fill it with the new crystals. The bag of crystals is about $12 and is able to fill about 2.5 cartridges. So we use our cardboard cartridge 2 months…the second month costs about half of the price of a new cartridge. The cardboard cartridge is lined with a thick plastic and we’ve never had a leak.
I’ll be short and to the point. This litter box does a wonderful job of taking all of the hassle out of owning a cat. As advertised the litter tray lasts around 22-28 days for my one cat. I was amazed at how well odors where limited and how clean the box smelled even after all that time. I think we could have gone another week on the tray but we changed it anyways just to be on the safe side.
My cat had little trouble getting used to the new system and now eagerly watches it scoop her waste away. I would highly recommed this to any cat owner as the actual cost isn’t really that much more than traditional litter and its a whole lot less work. I do recommend getting the extra canopy top for the unit and the large econ-o pack of litter trays.
Again overall, excellent product that works as advertised. I was scepticle going into it and all the positive reviews swayed my decision. I’m glad I made the purchse.
I have two cats and decided to try this litter box after a friend wouldn’t stop raving about it. It was easy to set up, but I was surprised how loud the sound of motor was – I thought the cats might not take to it. I decided to switch cold turkey on them and hope for the best. Max (the male) took to it right away with no issues. Squeaker (the female) would use it but would run and hide when the rake motor kicked in. After a week, she was fine. She still can’t figure out where the noise is coming from, but now she watches the rake instead of running from it.
I get about 3 wks from each cartridge, but my cats are small. (My friend gets about the same life but with one large cat.) Absolutely no odor and no leakage problems. I slide out the old one and slide in the new. I don’t dread changing the litter anymore. It’s great! My only complaint is that the litter is sticky when wet and i find crystals on floor. I hear they now have a mat to help with that, but I have’t tried it yet.
Our family has had cats for the past 35 years, and the only major problem during these fun years with our furry friends, has been both cat box odor and their cleaning!
Recntly, based on ravings from friends who already have it, we purchased the “Scoop Free LB1 Self-Cleaning Litter Box”. Our current feline family member Max, an 11 year old black & white American Short Hair, immediately began using it.
As far as we are concerned, the box pretty much works as advertised, and there has been no offensive smells after three weeks of use. There are, however, some “common sense” weekly routines that should be done that only take a minute:
1. Make sure your cat hasn’t accidentally missed the box.
2. Check to see that the rake hasn’t jammed.
3. Check to see that the power supply hasn’t failed.
From what we have observed, everything is working fine. Since Max is a large cat (18 pounds), he is a hungry cat and loves to eat… What goes in, must come out! Even with the absorbant, drying qualities of the crystals, it does pay to check “under the hood” at least once a week, to make sure it’s not getting overloaded. After two weeks, we did have to do a clean out, but it may not be necessary with other cats.
Apparantly, some people have experienced leaking. The Scoop Free web site does have some suggestions on minimizing this, and there are third party plastic containers that can be purchased instead of the throw away cardboard ones.
All in all, we have no problems recommending this device to any cat owners.
We’ve tried ‘em all: the Littermaid and the Purrforma. This is streets ahead of both: we have two cats, and two weeks later the litterbox is still clean smelling; they don’t track litter all over the place; it’s quiet; and it’s simple to maintain. The cartridges are much easier to store than bags or crates of litter. The only drawback is the price of the cartridges – but a house that doesn’t smell of cat poop? Priceless.
We went on a 14-day cruise and needed something for our cats to use. We set it up several days before the trip to see how the cats would take to it. Our easy going cat LOVED the litter box. She would run into the bathroom to see it operate. Our pure bred Siamese would hiss at it when it turned on to clear the tray. I am sure if we “worked” with our Siamese she would eventually use it. We only plan to use it when go on long trips.
The litter box was perfect. Worked wonderfully. Made no mess. Did not smell of perfumes. Cleaned up easily when it came time to change the litter tray.
I just love this automated litterbox!I had another well known automatic litterbox, and it was really a pain in the neck. The rake was always getting stuck over the compartment where the clumps got dumped. It’s much better using the crystal litter thats in the Scoop Free. This box is virtually maintainance free, and it lasts for about a month before having to change the inserts. With the old box,I would have to change the compartment every week because it would fill up,and I would have to add new litter sporadically. The Scoop Free doesn’t require any of this. It’s much better and it lasts for a month. Everything is also included when you change the insert monthly.I only wish I had bought the Scoop Free before buying the LitterMaid.
No more scooping. No more mess all over the floor. No odors. This auto litter box does the job. My two cats had no problem adapting to the new box. I simply threw out the old one and set up the Scoop Free. It was comical watching them puzzle over the moving rake. For my two cats one cartridge will last 10 days without getting nasty. Anything beyond that it and it pushes the nasty level. It can go beyond 10 days though. The cartridges are extremely easy to change. The bottom line is what used to be a daily ordeal has turned into barley a second thought.
P.S.
I recommend buying the hood.
Started using this box as the “downstairs” box for 2 cats on Christmas day. It was the preferred box by MLK day. By the end of Jan. the “upstairs” box is seldom used. I was a bit concerned when it took 3-5 days to get the kitties using it, but now its a hit. I haven’t had the troubles with leakage, but I do keep plastic underneath just in case. I’m still getting the hang of the duration of time between box changes. It looks like every 16-18 days for my cats. I get the replacement litter from Amazon using Prime and have been 100% satisfied.
We are very pleased with the product. We have two older cats who tend to use the box very often. We’ve had to change the tray every 5 days which may not be cost effective. But, overall it’s nice not to clean the litter box daily and there’s no odor.
After reading all the reviews of all the different automatic litter boxes, I splurged on this one. I’m very happy with it. I took all the advice about how to get the cats to use it. Left it off at first with regular litter inside so they understood it was a litter box (since the Crystal litter seemed weird for them, – use the Crystals Blend for a transition). I had to break down and buy the HOOD for it. THEN the cats finally understood and used it.
It is a drag that you have to replace the whole bottom. I try to get two or three uses out of it by layering the bottom with Baking Soda Litter Powder and refilling with store bought Crystals. That seems to work ok. Since I have to change it weekly due to having 4 cats.
I have four cats and I’ve gone from three litter boxes to just this one. The smell is gone and the Crystal litter doesn’t track near as much as the normal scoopable litter.
It’s expensive but I think it’s worth every penny. It changed our life!!
This product caught my attention because it needs no maintenance for up to 30 days (shorter if you have more than one cat). There are other automatic litter boxes that use clumping litter, but they still need to be emptied periodically. With the crystal type litter it really only needs to be changed once a month. Even then it is so easy and you never need to come in contact with any litter. I set it up and my cat used it with no problem within an hour. I would recommend this to anyone!!
I’ve been using a self-cleaning litter box for more then 10 years, which has been the original Littermaid. I tried the new Littermaid Elite and was very disappointed. While I had my original Littermaid I also tried the Petmate Purrforma and was disappointed in it as well, though not as much as the Elite. So, while I have the Elite white elephant, I decided to try the Scoop Free, especially since they have a 90 guarentee and will pay for return shipping (look at their website).
Well, I’ve very pleased. Right after I got it, I decided to see how much the motor can take, so I forced a cleaning cycle and I put my hand on the rake and tried to stop it. Compared to the Littermaid, overfilling should never be a problem. Though the crystal litter works different then clumping, the rake design is to try and lift solid matter is something the other litterboxes really needs, as it tends to not push as much litter as the clumping litter.
I don’t know how long I can get the cardboard boxes from Scoop Free to last, but if you take the precauion of ensuring the seams are sealed with either a glue or silicon, this seems to overcome some reviewer problems with the box starting to leak. I know the litter container that came with my new unit had a bubble in the top carboard layer right at the seam. Even with the fast absorbancy of the cyrstal litter, having a bubble in the seam is a sure way to allow urine to get behind the coated layer of cardboard and start to leak. I have also trimmed my cats nails, so she is not scratching though the carboard either. Since glue and silicon is relative cheap, I really don’t see this as a detraction. Using the cartrige box for several months and buying the crystal litter as needed, I don’t see this costing more then clumping litter.
The only thing I’ve observed is the catch area for the solid matter does not seal as well as Littermaid or the Petmate catch area containers. I’m still considering how to address this. Maybe all it needs is a little baking soda.
Of the four different litter boxes I’ve used, this is currently the best one I’ve had so far.
Works great…easy to use and change. My cat was afraid of it at first but quickly adapted. Some have
complained about the cost of refills, but considering how long these last…ALMOST a month…I’m spending
very little than I did before. Don’t worry about when its time to changes boxes. Your cat will let you know.
i bought this after reading the review here on Amazon. I previously owned the Stylette LitterSweep, and although it wasn’t bad, it was easily overwhelmed by 2 cats.
The Scoop Free is definitely better. Here are the pros & cons of the Scoop Free from my perspective:
Pros:
- it is very quiet
- the sweeping motion of the rake seems more sturdy and i think it will hold up better. The rake on the littersweep was easily overwhelmed.
Cons:
- The cartridges are a ripoff. I have 2 cats and am lucky to get a full 7 days of use out of them. The promise on the box (30 days for one cat, 15 for 2) is completely unrealistic in my opinion. At $15/each, 4 per month is too much. I bought the “forever litter box” from eBay and now i can just buy bulk crystals.
- the waste receptacle is a bit small. Again, even if the crystals did last more than 7 days, there wouldn’t be enough room inside the box.
- It would be nice if it was a little bit wider. The nice thing about the littersweep was it was nice and big. My cats are full grown and they seem to struggle to get situated in the box. I have thought about buying the cover, but i am afraid it would be too confining.

Update:
I recently discovered a new cat litter that works great with this product: Precious Cat Senior Litter. Now, at long last, I have what i was originally hoping for: lasts for 1 month, really great smell control, works well with both this litter box and my other one Petmate Litter RoundUp One Touch Electric Litter Controll System Blue/Gray
My recommendation buy this product, the forever litter pan, and the Precious Cat Senior litter
I was a little skeptical after reading some reviews, but I finally broke down and bought one of these. I’m happy to say that I am very pleased with my purchase. There is no smell at all coming from the box and it’s super easy to change the cartridge. I have read that some people have a problem with the “waste” getting stuck in the rake, but I haven’t had that problem at all. My cats love this box. When they hear it start up, they will run over and watch it do its work. It has also been great for when I need to go on a trip for a few days. It’s nice to no thave to worry about who will clean my cats box.
I drew the short straw when it came to the household chore of cleaning the cat box. Obviously, it’s the big drawback to cat ownership. I finally broke down and started looking at self-cleaning cat boxes.
Originally, we were looking at getting a Litter Robot, but after reading complaints about smell and other issues online, we went for the ScoopFree. It’s cheaper to start with, the drawback is the ongoing cost from the refills. However, after some research, I uncovered “forever” inserts that you can buy online from a well-known auction website. Another suggection (besides many of the others listed if you read the reviews) is to line the disposable tray with Coroplast. I think we’re eventually going to go the “forever” route, and just buy the crystal litter ourselves.
In any case, the Scoop Free works like a dream. It’s quiet, effective, and hassle-free. Both of our cats took to it immediately, and you’d never know there was a cat box in the house. Yay!
After buying the Elite and others, this one WORKS. I never touch it except one a month to change it out. The smell is fine–much better than any past box. I’d buy one again…and again…it’s worth it!
The Scoop Free Self-Cleaning litter box is the best one I have ever used. I would give it 100 stars if possible!
I have two older cats, who I was concerned if they would take to it, but both started using the box right away without any problems. One of the cats has bowel problems, and tends to be pretty smelly when he uses a litter box. He is also very finicky about the litter box being clean, and will go elsewhere if it is not up to his liking. The Scoop Free Self-Cleaning Litter box has solved both of these problems. The bad smells are gone and so is the problem of cleaning the litter box, the box does that for you!
Another problem that this litter box has resolved is the sneaking of “treats” from the litter box by my dog (Some people know what I’m talking about…really disgusting). Now the litter box rakes the cat “treats” away and deposits them out of doggie’s reach!
I simply cannot go on enough about this wonderful product! I am finally fully happy being a cat owner!
My husband and I are so glad we bought this litter box. Our apartment smells better, the cats don’t drag clay litter all over the floor anymore, and best of all, my husband has more time with me since he isn’t constantly scooping and scrubbing the litter box anymore. I would recommend this litter box to anyone with cats or even small, litter-trained dogs. It is well worth its price in gold!

Just wanted to add an update. We got a chihuahua a few months ago and have already trained her to use this litter box. She loves it and it’s such a lifesaver in this Florida heat!

Update: After less than a year of use, the ScoopFree no longer works. It starts running when the cats get in the box and half the time it won’t scoop their poop anymore. We stopped using it and went back to scooping litter. I’m disappointed this didn’t last longer, especially considering the amount of money we put into the unit and the refill trays. Amazon wouldn’t let me change my rating, but now I’d give it 2 stars or less.
I really love these litter boxes. My kitties are a bit picky: I got the second kitten three weeks ago and ended up buying her a separate box: So far that’s worked out perfectly: They’re both very happy and I haven’t had to change the cartridge: 30 days is a very, very optimistic estimate. Like others said: you’d need to take out the dried up poop for them to last that long. It also depends very much on the cat’s diet. That said, the fact of not needing to touch the poop completely outweighs any time considerations.
There’s a special carpet that you can’t order from here, but from the manufacturer’s site: Anti-Tracking Carpet, which, together with the hood contains the litter very nicely: Any other litter spill carpet will do nicely too.
I bought the ScoopFree because of the excellent reviews here and it’s not dissappointed for a moment. Yes, from time to time poop will stick to the rake, but I haven’t had any mechanical problems and the kitties are very happy with it, and even play with it.
I love the fact that this setup makes a litter box clean and dust free. It didn’t take any time at all for our two cats to get used to it too. It was worth the investment from day one.
I’ve had the scoop-free for four months now. I bought it after reading many reviews of similar products. It works perfectly. I have two 1-year old cats. The cartridge goes about 10 days between changing. And changing the cartridge is a snap. The fresh step crystals it uses are great. No odor. But at $15 a refill, they are very expensive. Still, it is worth it for a product that works as well, and as reliably as this does.
I did try saving money by buying the fresh step crystals separately ($12 for 8 pounds, the cartridge uses 4 pounds) and refilling the cartridge. You can do this twice before the plastic liner on the cartridge starts to curl and cause slight binding. It’s a messy job changing the crystals out though. It’s much easier to just pitch the old one and slap in a new. And didn’t we get this thing so we wouldn’t have to mess around with litter?
Anyway, despite the expense, I give it 5-stars because it works exactly as advertised.
This product has changed how I handle my cat litter issues. I travel for a living, and the hardest part of coming home after three days was the cat box. Nasty… I set this up (the directions are not great) and once my three cats saw how it works it was easy. Okay, except for my Siamese. She took one look at it and ran away from home. (A story in itself!) Six days later she came back and went straight to the cat box to see if it was still there. Suffice to say, she has learned to use it. It keeps things very clean, however I have one cat that likes to bury very deep and there is not enought litter to satisfy her. I have solved it by having a supplimental bag of crystals to help this along and I have found that if you line the tray with a kitchen sized trash bag, not only does it not leak, when you do change out the cartidge, you can just pop the whole thing into the trash bag. I love this product except for the price. The cartridges are very expensive, although in my case they are well worth the price.
This is so much easier! I HATE scooping litter. It is my least favorite chore. It works well, my cat took to it very quickly, and I don’t think it’s too noisey. It’s downstairs, so I’m usually not around when it does its job, but when I’m downstairs, it doesn’t seem too loud. The price of the litter cartridges is totally worth it for me. $15 for not having to scoop is a bargain.
OK, still works great! No problems with leaking. I have 2 cats, but just one uses it. I have never had a leaking problem. Maybe my cat likes to go in different spots though. I now get the cartriges online for cheaper than what I was paying at the local pet store ($18).
Never had an automatic litter box before. i did a lot of reserch on them before choosing this one and have not regretted buying this one. It works great. I get close to 21 days between changes. and there is no odor. The first time i had to add some regular litter to help train my cat to use it but she took to it great after that.
I read through all of the reviews and finally decided to buy a ScoopFree litter box. I had a manual litterbox before and all I can say is wow! the litterbox doesn’t smell, easy to use, set-up and throw away! The rake rakes all the way front to back. I have two cats and after my success with the first one, I decided to get another one for the house. It’s in my bedroom and doesn’t wake me up in the middle of the night. It’s medium loud.
The cons are that the cartridges can be a bit expensive. The best way to get the most value is to get at least one litter box for each cat in your household. Then you can really change each box every 30 days.
We are now on day 3 of using this box and the crystals. I have 2 cats and one is diabetic so she uses the box a lot. I was hesitant to order the box because of the cost of the replacement cartridges but it is worth the price. We put the box in the kitchen (because that was the only place I could plug it in) and there is NO SMELL. Really. No dust, no tracking, no sifting the litter, no smell. This product rocks!
There is a little bonus to the box too. When it starts to self-clean, both cats stop to watch it in action.
I highly recommend this product.
After going through three Littermaid brand “automatic” litter boxes in as many years we decided to give the Scoop Free box a try. This box works as advertised. We have 20lb cat that eats and poops a lot so we were dubious that the fairly small collection “box” wouldn’t be filled to the brim in a few days (as are the Littermaid collection bins). The Scoop Free box uses a different litter material that seems to represent a substantial improvement over the standard “clumping” cat litter. The end result is less smell, more time between clean-ups/emptying the bins, no lugging in big jugs/bags of cat litter into the house, and substantially quieter operation. As for cons, I haven’t done the calculation yet but the cat litter replacement units seem to be slightly more pricey than the cost of the LitterMaid bins + premium cat litter (I suspect that the Scoop Free marketing people took this calculation into account when setting the price of this “cash cow” component of automated litter box market). Anyhow, when I consider what we routinely tip waiters at restaurants per week for carrying food out to our table, the enhanced performance and convenience of the Scoop Free box pays for any nominal difference in price several times over (I wonder how much I’d have to tip a waiter to get them to clean out the cat box for me?). If you’re in the market for an automatic cat box, save yourself a lot of hassle/expense and start with this system.
I tried the Littermaid Elite first. The automatic rake broke withing one month. Littermaid does not sell that one component by itself.
I then tried the Scoop Free, and was pleasantly surprised. Not only does it do the job, but using the crystals rather then cat litter, the odor thst you would expect is not there. I keep it in my bedroom and do not know that it is there most of the time.
Very nice product.
This is a wonderful product. However, it is extremely expensive both initially and monthly. This thing works like nothing else. No smell at all when it’s within the 10 days (I have 2 cats) but replacing the litter every 10 days is around 50.00/month. However, with these cats I was buying nearly 30.00 in litter anyway, so the 20.00 is well worth it. I can now leave them and not worry about any surprises on my couch. If you have picky cats, buy this product and buy the refills from Amazon. I haven’t found it cheaper at any pet store and it ships for free.
I’ve tried the Littermaid and a host of the traditional litter boxes. Nothing has come close to the ease of use the Scoop Free and everything else has had an obvious odor. On two occasions I have been asked, “Where’s the litterbox?” from guests when they realize we have cats and zero odor.
The cats:
1) 18lb Russian Blue, 13 years old
2) 10lb Calico, 12 years old
Each cat has their own litterbox. We get about 3 weeks of use out of each refill cartridges.
My only complaint:
For the money, these cartridges should be 100% plastic lined. The current design has a plastic lined base, but urine can still creep up the sides and “wet” the cardboard.
Highly recommended.
Works as described. The two cats had no trouble adapting to it.
We are very happy. My girlfriend’s cat, Bogey, is an 18 lb male. It took him about 3 days to start using the scoop free litterbox. We followed the instructions, i.e. we put a cup of his familiar clay litter on top of the crystals and we left the old box dirty and nearby. This worked like a charm. I should note that Bogey is a pretty laid back dude. I previously had a cat that pooped in a shoe the first time she saw a littermaid in action. Bogey is not that uptight. We did notice more smell when he poops, however I agree with others that this is a diet issue, he prefers cheap cat food. For his long-term health, I’m going to see if I can get him to eat higher quality food. The poop is raked into the side compartment 20 minutes after Bogey is done, and then the smell is a non-issue for us. One tray of crystals lasts 20 days. I might be able stretch this if I stir the crystals a bit, especially since Bogey likes to urinate in one particular corner, which btw saturated the crystals and the cardboard box in that area. Fortunately, we PUT A NICE LOOKING DOORMAT under the litterbox to protect the floor. I emphasize this b/c those who are trying out the product should also do this to be safe. For a long term solution, I just ordered the permascoop tray. I’m sure it won’t be fun washing that tray every 20 days, but in the whole scheme of things it’s really nice not to have to scoop every day. Good luck with your litterbox adventure.
I have 3 cats… and have tried a variety of automatic litter boxes (Litter Robot: great but one of my cats didn’t like it, Litter Maid: had 3 of those…got gummed up, had to be washed out regularly, and broke easily, Pet Mate Litter Roundup: broke 2 months after I bought it.)
Scoop Free has been the best – particularly since I have 3 older cats whom are set in their ways. Zero smell. Easy to switch cartridges. The cats will use it (and not leave feline landmines around the house in protest of “yet another automatic litterbox that they hate.”)
We are so glad we bought it. I recommend a hood if your cats jump out and scatter litter from their toes after usinging the box.
Once my cat finally started using it, I’d have to say its the best $120 I spent in a while. Unfortunatly it took my cat over 2 months to use it. I was about to send it back after trying all of the suggestions from others on line. The last thing I tried was keeping the old one next to it, & letting it get really disgusting, this didn’t work so, finally I took away the old one and left her locked in the bathroom overnight with the scoop free, and she finally used it. She is an old cat, but she now seems to be very happy with it, & I love it.
The Scoop Free Litter box is awesome! My cat was used to using the Litter Maid, and the Scoop Free has exceeded all of my expectations, and he took to it with no problem. I love this litter box so much that I called my brother who owns a couple of pet stores in California, and told him that he MUST carry this product. I had lots of trouble with the Litter Maid, and it was always messy. Not having to touch or scoop anything with the Scoop Free is awesome. I can’t give a product a higher recomendation.
Well we bought this Scoopfree Automated Self Cleaning Litter box last week. The only reason we bought it is because we are going to be taking 2 vacations soon and we didn’t want anyone coming in our home while we are away. So we decided to buy this item with the hood and scoopfree matching rug and try it out. At first to be honest I thought it was stupid spending because it costed so much even though Amazon is much cheaper than pets stores and the free shipping is nice.
Well we received it from Amazon 3 days ago and set it up immediately. My first thought was was I loved the way it looked and the size of it for my bigger cat because it gives her more room. We have 1 cat who weighs 15 pounds. We did what they suggested and left her old litter box next to the Scoopfree one. As soon as we set it up she went half way in just checking it out. That night she quit using her old box and started using the new Scoopfree automated self cleaning litter box. We were so thrilled! So today we got rid of the old litter box. I have to say it is awesome!! There is no more dust, or strong smells from clay litter. It is so nice not having to clean the box out everyday anymore now it’s just once a month and all you have to do is throw away the tray and insert a new one. My cat loves to watch the litter box do the self cleaning and so do my kids HA! I haven’t noticed any odor coming from the box and it is in my office where my computer is and I am there off and on all day. Also when it cleans the noise level is not loud. Now I wouldn’t want to put it in the room I sleep in because it would wake me up. So we have to say we love our box so far. I did price the refill cartridges verses litter and we use to use scoop away litter and you really are only talking maybe $3-4 more a month. So it’s worth it to me. You can buy them in bulk on Amazon and they are only like $13 each averaged out. Well I hope my review helps. We sure love our new litter box and I know would love yours to.
I absolutely love this litter box. I had the Litter Maid before, and it just did not work well. Too dusty, had to be cleaned by hand too much, too hard to thoroughly clean the box, poo kept getting stuck to the rake tines, etc. This Scoop Free box is SO much better! I have 2 cats and it lasts about 15 days on the litter. The replacement cartridge price is outrageous, so I have tried dumping the old litter into a trash bag, wiping down the cartridge with Clorox wipes, and then putting in new litter. This worked for about a month, but now the pee is leaking through my reused cardboard cartridge. Not good. Someone else mentioned a “forever cartridge.” Does anyone know where I can find this, PLEASE? I keep searching on eBay and elsewhere on the net, but have not been able to find it. The makers of this box really need to make their own hard plastic bottom. I don’t mind dumping the litter. It’s so much nicer than cleaning an old fashioned box or a Litter Maid. It slides easily into a trash bag for cleaning. But I can’t afford $15-$20 every 2 weeks for a new cartridge! Hopefully someone can help.
This box doesn’t clog (unlike a lot of the other “self cleaning” boxes). The only time it gets close is when the reservior is full and it’s time to change the cartridge. I like that the cartride is made up of the reservoir, the bottom AND the litter, so you don’t have to get in there and clean anything.
I was worried about the cats being afraid of the boxes because of the noise and action, but I think the time-delay (it runs several minutes after they use it) just made them curious about it. They’ll go over and watch the machine “steal the poo”.
We have three cats and two of these boxes, and the house has never smelled better!!!!!
I bought the Scoop Free litter box about 8 months ago. I was a little leery at first as I tried another brand and it lasted about a day before jamming up and breaking, also it was hard to believe 30 days without “service”. Well let me tell you this box works great! It doesn’t quite go 30 days, more like three weeks with our cat before it starts to pick up a little urine odor. But even after three weeks it smells better than a regular cat box that hasn’t been serviced for one day!
Every now and then a little waste will be dropped in the wrong place and need to be manually cleaned up. And once or twice our cat has been more prolific in filling it up with solid waste so we’ve cleaned the solid waste out of the trap a week or so before changing the whole cartridge. We also find that the cat tracks a little litter around the box so we need to sweep or vacuum every few days. But even with these quirks, and the relatively high price of the litter cartridges, I think the Scoop Free box is a great product and well worth the cost.
My cats have been using this box for a little over a month now. I have 2 cats a 3 month old kitten and he took to it right away the other is 2 1/2 yrs and it took her about 2 weeks to get used to it. I would highly recommend this box. I have had a Litter-Maid and didn’t like it this is so much easier.
After researching and reading many reviews on various sites (and having used other comparable products – mainly Littermaids), I am am not only thrilled with this litterbox, but so are my cats. The unit is a breeze to clean between changes, is much quieter, and so much easier to handle while cleaning and changing cartridges (Littermaid litterally was a chore!). The most fascinating thing about this box is how my much cats love it. With other units, once I cleaned the unit and changed the litter, the cats would come running which would last an hour of so. Now I have one cat that actually sleeps next to the box in the bathroom, she loves it so much.
I agree with other reviewers that the additional price is a bit hard to swallow, but the low tracking litter and ease of cleaning both the box itself and the surrounding areas really makes up for it. I agree that stirring the litter 1-2 times a day extends the life of the cartridge and so far each one has lasted 12-14 days with 2 young healthy cats. I have yet to try the “Forever Cartridge” found on eBay, but may give it a shot sometime soon to see if I can reduce my overall costs. (I did contact Scoop Free and they have no interst in creating such an item at this time.)
Overall opinion… buy it, you won’t be disappointed.
ScoopFree has freed me from the daily-or-every-other-day task of scooping litter for my 2 cats. I went online to search out a ’self-scooping litter box’. I chose ScoopFree mainly because it’s design was not as bulky and mechanical looking as the other brands, and the disposable boxes sounded much easier and sanitary. Be sure to mark a calendar or put a reminder in your PDA to change it out in the number of weeks recommended for your number of cats. (I change it every 12 days since 2 wks was recommended for 2 cats) I’ve owned it for 3 months now…Our cats adjusted to it just fine, within the first few days (I left their ‘old’ box w/litter-sand in the laundry room next to the ScoopFree…Once I found they were both using ScoopFree, I removed the old one.) Our female cat will run into the laundry room when she hears the subtle activation sound, just to watch it ‘do it’s thing’…I think she is grateful for it’s cleanliness! Now I only have to ‘tend to the litter box every 12-14 days’….So it’s living up to it’s name…I am Scoop Free!
Thank goodness for the Scoop Free litter box! I’ve tried several other automated litter boxes over the past few years, and while they were all a better alternative to non-automated boxes, they still required quite a bit of work. Not anymore, though, because this works so well that after I replace the cartridge I don’t have to think about it until it’s time to change it again.
We have two cats, and the Scoop Free holds up just fine with all of their traffic. I need to change the box every 10 days or so (otherwise it starts to smell) and the process couldn’t be easier. My house is cleaner and odor-free and I have much less work to do – I couldn’t be happier!
My boyfriend suggested this box to me. He has two cats and said that it worked much more effectively than the litter maid. I have to agree. There is no odor at all with this box. It’s truly wonderful. The motor is a little loud but not bad. The replacement cartridges are pricey, but you can get them on amazon with free freight so it’s more economical than buying them at the brick and morter store. I highly recommend this box.
I LOVE the Scoop Free Litter Box and so does Sophie…my cat!
I can leave town and ask only for someone to feed her which is so wonderful…the box has worked perfectly and I have not had to replace the tray much at all since she does go in and outside. The Scoop Free Box has been a life saver…I highly reccomend them.
I was really doubtful when I bought this because I’ve tried a few automatic litter boxes before and been burned, but this one is incredible.
We have two cats, and I bought the model with the dome lid on top for them about two months ago. So far it has never jammed, our cats got used to it right away and had no “accidents,” and there’s been no smell at all. There’s also hardly any litter spilled or tracked across the floor now.
With two cats (and I personally think our cats are pooping machines), one of the trays lasts me just under two weeks. It may seem like a pain to have to buy the trays, but trust me – it is COMPLETELY worth it to not have to scoop every day and deal with the smell. I adore this thing.
We travel a lot, so we also have an automatic water fountain for the cats and a free-feeder jug – when we’re gone we just have to ask a friend to pop in play with them. No scooping up poop or dealing with feedings. So, I think we made our friends a lot happier with this purchase too.
The only downside I can think of is that the trays are a bit too large for our garbage can, so we have to bend them in half to dispose of them.
It’s worth every penny!
So I have two cats, and we bought one of these Scoop Free boxes about 6 months ago. I can say without reserve that I love this box. It has a couple of cons that I’ll mention below, but they are outweighed by the simple fact that I don’t have to mess with a nasty litter box anymore.
Our girl cat used a LitterMaid fine, and we didn’t really have a problem with it, except that their cartridges were a pain to clean. Once I figured out though that standard grocery bags were the perfect liner, it wasn’t too bad.
Then we got our boy cat. I think he just has a large bladder and only empties it once a day. The LitterMaid and its clumping litter are NOT good at dealing with this. I was forever un-sticking the clump from the rakes, or the rake would stick and not move and I’d have to go un-stick it. It made a horrible racket when it did that. Eventually he managed to burn out three separate LitterMaid boxes with that trick.
We gave up on LitterMaid and saw the Scoop Free boxes, so decided to give them a try. Honestly it’s like night and day. The rake never ever sticks. I can leave for the weekend without fearing that the litter box is going to break and scare the cats.
With our two cats, a cartridge lasts right about 12-16 days. Not bad at all. Sometimes I’ll do the stirring thing, other times I’ll just ignore it for a full two weeks, and it’ll still get the job done. Wow.
Cons:
Price of cartridges.
Can get a little ammonia smelling, but not too bad
Somehow my cats manage once a month or so to get a dried out poop out of the box and onto the floor. No idea how they manage this, but it’s less messy than when they did it with the grit covered ones from the LitterMaid. If anyone knows how to stop this habit, I’d love to hear it!
Pros:
Little to no maintenance
Quick and easy cartridge change (flip the plastic on its side, lean against the wall. slide out old cartridge, slide in new cartridge. put plastic back down, empty in crystals. put old cartridge in black plastic garbage bag and put in outside trash) 5 minutes, tops.
Quieter than the LitterMaid boxes were, which is a happy thing for the skittish cat.
Honestly I can’t say enough that the fact that I don’t have to scoop a litter box any more is worth the cartridge price. I hope they don’t raise the price any farther because it’s pretty expensive, but for now it’s worth it to me.
Thank you people at Scoop Free. You are awesome.
We had a first-generation Littermaid that bit the dust after about 5 years. We tried the traditional box with regular and clumping litter but with 2 cats, we were changing the regular litter every 2 days and one of our cats had become very particular — let’s just say she was showing us her displeasure if the litter wasn’t clean enough for her liking more often than every 2 days. I was going to buy a new-generation Littermaid but after reading the customer reviews, I decided to try the Scoop-Free instead. We’ve had the box for 2 weeks now and I’m very happy so far. The biggest advantage the Scoop Free has over the Littermaid is it’s unique waste catching process — combining the rake with the urine-absorbing crystals, which results in overall less solid waste and thus less cartridge changing. With the Littermaid, between our two cats (one very old and one very big) we were having to change the cartridge every 2 days anyway and everyone knows what happens with the Littermaid when you forget to change it on time. The Littermaid also resulted in a lot more spillage and tracking of litter around the box, and there has been very, very little tracking with the Scoop Free — in fact, I didn’t buy the hood and even with it open, the odor control and tracking control has been far superior to the Littermaid. I will say that the refill catridges are a little pricy, but I’m certain overtime the price will come down and in the meantime if I do some savvy shopping I can keep it under control. Once I figured in the cost of the Littermaid cartridges and the scooping litter I had to add to the Littermaid, the cost ratio was more or less comparable between the SF and the LM anyway. The product is very easy to install, change and clean and comes with clear, concise directions and a 90-day moneyback guarantee from the manufacturer should you not be absolutely delighted — I’ve got original packaging and the receipt in the garage just in case, but at this point, I don’t see us sending it back. The instructions do say that if you have multiple cats and/or older cats, you will have to change the cartridges more often (every 10-15 days versus 30 for your average-sized, average-aged single cat) and my initial experiment with the box with my 2 cats shows I’m going to need to change it every 10 days … but I have one very old cat who drinks a lot of water and one very large cat (30 lbs … ) which is more like having two cats, so it makes sense. (After about Day 10 I started to notice a faint odor of urine as I walked past the box as the crystals reached “absorption max” … up until that point, odor control was phenomenal!) So it will cost me about $45 a month in cartridges. I changed it today and as advertised, never had to see the solid waste, changed quickly, wiped down the case with an antibacterial wipe and I was back in business. Best of all, our “picky” cat loves the new box and has not soiled anywhere but in the Scoop Free box since we installed it. This in and of itself made it worth its weight in gold to us — cat uses the box, box only requires maintenance every 10 days. With two busy schedules and young children to care for, it’s nice to not have to devote the extra time to tending the litter. Strongly recommended!
UPDATE: May 2007 — we still like this box a lot, but if you have pets who like to wet the box in a certain spot, be sure to follow the manufacturer’s guidelines to rake/stir the litter frequently; if you do not, and your cat prefers a certain spot, the crystals in that spot will cease to absorb properly and the box will leak through in that spot. Still, even with this issue (which is unique to cats that have a preferred spot) the odor control and ease of use of this box has been great overall.
AND ANOTHER UPDATE, JAN 08: We still REALLY like this box. We order the 6-pk refills from Amazon using our free 2-day Prime shipping and find they are very competitively priced if we do so. We go through 2 refills a month with our 24-lb cat (our 19-yr-old cat passed away over the summer) which would work out to two avg sized cats I think. We did end up buying and using both the privacy hood and the litter tracking mat to keep down on the tracking. Box is easy to clean and keeps your hands clean, as promised. Almost a year later, we’re still enthusiastic about this … a great value for the price.
I live in only 500 square feet and my litter box is in my kitchen. I’ve tried everything from regular cat litter to the litermaid, and this litter box is the BEST by far! Because of the size and weight of the crystals, I no longer have litter all over the floor that gets tracked through the apt. I only have to change it once a month, and I can literally ignore the box the entire time. It is a lot quieter than the littermaid and it is MUCH cleaner! The littermaid is poorly constructed, so litter would always end up slipping throug the cracks between the actual box and the waste bin. I spent so much time sweeping up piles of litter, it wasn’t worth it! With the Scoop Free box, I don’t have to do a thing except put the lid on the top of the box.
I LOVE THIS PRODUCT!!
I bought this litter box with a lot of hesitation from being disappointed in other litter boxes. This litter box is the best. I have had no problems with anything and my cat uses it a lot! I have emptied the kitty turds once after two weeks to save the refill box and they are so dried it’s really not a big deal.(you only have to do that if you want to save money on refills) Overall- I don’t have to worry about cleaning the litter box every day- which i use to do!! Very satisfied with this litter box!
We have 2 cats and have tried all the different litter boxes. Even the very high dollar ones that hook uo to water (our cats hated that and 1 would never use it). to the kind the spins on a sphere (that would never stabilize and the cats were afraid to jump in it), The tines of this new machine NEVER clog. We had no transition time, they immediately liked it, The smell has cut down 150% and the ease of changing the trays is so amazing. The replacememnt trays are pricey but this 2 cat homeowner thinks they are worth every penny!!!!
I had bought a Purrforma system about a year and a half ago-without reading the reviews-which never worked correctly and smelled awful. About a month ago, the motor burned out and at that point I was forced to go back to the manual box-not fun and not practical because I travel frequently. After reading many reviews of the various systems, I decided to try this system because it got the highest reviews and I needed something other than the manual system. I was cautiously optimistic with zero expectations.
To my great surprise, this system is amazing!!
Very easy to put together, and a very clean system.
I have one cat that is 5 years old and she took to it without any problem.
Since, I have gotten rid of the old box there has been no odor of ammonia or other odors. The cardboard box now has a plastic bottom which should eliminate the leakage problem that others have complained of.
I have found that it does help if you mix up the litter every couple days-especially if your cat likes to go in one spot all the time.
The only downside which has already been stated is that the refills are somewhat expensive but in my opinion, totally worth it for the convenience.
This is the first auto scoop litter box we have owned. We searched the internet before we bought and found this one had the best reviews and they were so right. We have mutiple cats so we purchased three plus the hoods. Our cats, even the finicky ones, love them. It is funny watching them when the raking system goes on. We are so happy we bought them and urge anyone considering one to go ahead and get one because they will not be disappointed. There is absolutely no smell from the litter boxes now. Probably one of the best kitty purchases we have made. There is some noise when it rakes but it is not annoying at all. Five stars are not enough.
We have a larger (16 lb) female Maine Coon and I find this product to be great. I previously used a Littersweep..which was junk. This one works exactly as advertised If you have multiple cats the refill will NOT last 30 days which is exactly what the literature says so don’t expect it. Others have complained about the noise…well, it is a machine after all and while not totally silent it is very quiet. Others have complained about the poop receptacle.. it IS about full @ 30 days (the interval at which I change it)so it lasts adaquately and again what the literature suggests. There is always the option of scooping some out prior to the 30 change limit. It is dehydrated and you will find it quite light and dried out if you try that. Others have complained that it (the refill tray) leaks urine early into its life…not possible unless you have about four cats or are doing something wrong. Others have complained about mechanical failure early on…maybe, but simply exersize your return rights and get another. Others have complained about poor odor control…well I have found a slight ammonia odor toward the very end of its 30 day lifespan. Frankly, about the only thing I find “wrong” is the cost of the refills but maybe if one were to compute the costs of regular clumping litter..the aggravation of playing with the broken clumps as I found I had to do with the Littersweep and probably with other automated boxes which utilize clumping litter the cost may not be that bad. So, all in all I quite like it. Keep in mind nothing is perfect but this is as close as I have found with automated cat litter boxes.
This litterbox became my new best friend the day it arrived. My 7 year old cat used it right away once I put her in it and used her paw to scratch a little. My kitten used it after I put a little bit of regular litter in it. Now they both share it and let me tell you- it is soooo much better than regular litter boxes. The refills are a bit pricey, but totally worth it.
I’ve gone through many litter maids and got frustrated because they were difficult to clean (or maybe just gross) and were continuously breaking, forcing me to buy replacements.
I’ve been using the Scoop Free for over a year now. The litter box doesn’t smell as bad, and THEY DON’T BREAK!
My cats don’t mind the crystals, and the litter box is much easier to clean and maintain.
The only downside is the additional cost (refills are costly), but if you can afford it, it’s completely worth the $$.
When our Littermaid unit wore out and died, I did some research on line and decided to try the Scoop Free box. We have had it now for 3-4 weeks and so far it is working just as advertised. It is better than Littermaid and quieter. There is almost no tracking of litter around the house.
One of my cats took to the new litter box immediately. The other needed a mix of crystals and regular litter in a separate box for about two weeks (messy to clean…) and then transitioned smoothly to crystals. He is still unsure about using it with the hood on, though. The box itself works well mechanically. The fact that the cartridge slides out entirely makes clean-up/changing the box super easy. There is virtually no odor other than immediately following the cats relieving themselves (in solid form). So far, I’ve needed to change the cartridge after 4 weeks. The box is used by two large, adult male cats.
Say goodbye to tracked litter on the floor, foul odors, stuck rakes and loud noises in the middle of the night. I have 5 cats and have been using the Littermaid automatic box for about 2 years and have been wishing for something better..Scoopfree is it! This box is quiet, leaves no odors at all, the crystals stay inside the box so there isn’t the constant need to sweep underneath the box like with the littermaid. My cats immediately took to the crystals and have had no problems using this box. I had been using this new one and the old one side by side for about a month for a comparison and I just ordered a second Scoopfree (mom gets the old littermaid). If you have one or multiple cats, this box is just an amazingly easy way to handle litter. Oh and clean up is a snap- you just lift the box off of the litter cartrige, cover with the attached lid and toss. Never a chance of touching dirty litter when you change like the other box. No scooping, scraping, shaking required! I changed the cartige after 3 weeks only becuase the litter was getting shallow and I felt weird about not having to change it for such a long time. With two boxes I’m sure I can go a month without changing, so it saves money on litter.
I had just returned another self cleaning box when I got this one. (see littermaid elite-awful!!!) Anyway, this little box is great! I got the hood for it because that is what my cats are used to. It was so easy to put together and set up! And no nasty clumps of urine and poo to deal with. The clumping litter is great in a regular box, but in a self cleaning box (The Mega Elite uses the clumping litter) the rake just breaks the clumps apart and leaves little “stinklets” in the “clean” litter. This box is a better design too. Not heavy like some of the others. While the litter cartridges can be a bit heavy, I don’t think it is excessive. The price right now may be high for some people, but for now, I think it will be worth it to me. Especially if I can get two times the life out of one cartridge. I read someone’s post about using press n seal on the bottom of the cartridge to make it last a bit longer. I will try this with the next one and see how it goes. However, the bottom of the cartridges are covered in some type of plastic, which might be okay. It does not appear to be waxy as some have discussed. Perhaps they have made them better already? This box is not noisy at all. If anyone thinks it is, get the box I mentioned above. This box was so much quieter! I hope you all read the posts first! Don’t make the same mistake I did by not researching first. I just got so excited about the idea of a self cleaning box, I went right out and got one. I did stand there and look at the 3 they offered for a long time before deciding. I just decided wrong the first time! Good luck to all of you, and take care!
UPDATE!! The Press and Seal did not work. The rake picked it up and balled it up in the litter. What a mess! Maybe I did not do it right, but I even taped the corners so it would stick better. No way! I am having to change the cartridge once a week because I have two cats who are always in the box it seems. I have been emptying it out and adding new crystals. I just ordered the Scoop Free Forever Cartridge based on someone’s posting. I had just ordered the 3 pack refill cartridges, but when I saw the forever cartridge, I cancelled my order and got this instead! I can’t wait! Most people may not want to clean the tray, but really the mess just slides right out because the crystals are silica and they soak up moisture. There may be a little residue, but it is a much easier cleanup than clumping litter! Then you put in new crystals (4 to 4.5 pounds by the way). It is important to get the right amount and depth for the box to work right. Until my forever cartridge comes in, I will refill the old ones. But I think the forever cartridge will be the answer to the expense of this box!!!
Update again! Just got my forever pan and it is exactly as promised! He guarantees the product too! You have nothing to lose. He is very nice and will personally answer any questions you have. He is sold out right now, but keep searching for “forever tray” or “scoop free forever tray”. He is making more so keep looking! Best of luck!
This is my second ScoopFree. It’s a lazy person’s litter box! I change the litter tray on the 1st then ignore it for 30 days. Can’t beat that. Much quieter than other electronic box I had. Other one was messier too, changing the plastic receptical for the other one ended up spewing litter (used) all over the place. Yuck! With the ScoopFree the litter sits in a disposable tray that you toss out every month. Refill trays a little pricey but well worth it to me. Cat likes it too. Highly recommend this box.

I was tired of cleaning the litterbox every single day, and if I left it without cleaning the smell was terrible, enter the Scoop Free LB1 Self-Cleaning Litter Box, this box is simply amazing! my cat took to it immediately, I’ve had it for 2 weeks and the room its in doesn’t stink anymore. It is really quiet, and the mechanism works like a charm. The Fresh Step® Litter absorbs the liquid part, while the automated rake does the rest.
I would suggest cleaning the hidden compartment after a couple of weeks because you can start smelling a little of the waste. But other than that who could ask for anything more?
UPDATED after 9 months of use. I followed the instructions and placed the Scoop Free Litterbox next to one of the regular litter boxes that my cats use. Within 2 days, my cats started using the Scoop Free litterbox and dissed the old one. They seem to really like the crystals, which efficiently absorbs odors. I have had to clean the rake about once a week, but I have 8 cats using two of these (along with several more conventional litterboxes), so that’s not bad. Every time a cat steps in the box and does its thing, the timer resets giving enough time for the crystals to dry out any fecal matter so that it rakes into the container without sticking. I also purchased the mat which catches the crystal litter on my cats’ feet. Although I liked it initially, I no longer use it. It is difficult to keep clean and also some of my cats, whom shall remain nameless, have urinated on it. Now I just sweep daily any loose litter that is tracked out of the box.
We have 3 cats, a dog and a new baby. Ever since I became Pregnant my husband has been the one that is “supposed” to clean the litter boxes (we have 2). There were times I would come in the back room and the boxes were so full the cats would start looking too pee on the floor! Many fights erupted over this and I finally started looking into automatic litter boxes, out of all of them this one got the best reviews so we bought it. We have 3 cats so we do have to change the cartridge more then once every 30 days and we also have a senior feline so we had to be sensitive to her adjusting to the new box. I kept one of their old boxes down and put the new one next to it. I filled the old box with their old litter and over the course of a few weeks kept adding more and more of the Fresh Step crystals I bought at the store. Soon their old box had all crystals in it and no more clumping litter. Over time they started using the automatic box more and more and now that is the one they use the most. We are going to be buying a second Automatic box and getting rid of the other box all together.
I love it ! I have had no problems with the motor. Since the formula’s have changed in the clumping litter and they tend to fall apart and cause problems with the other self cleaning litter boxes. I completey recommend this product.
Oh how I hated having to clean out my cats litter box everyday, especially with all the wet food I give him. This litter box is such a life saver…and time saver. I have the litter box in my room and I can’t even smell that there is a litter box in there. I love it!!!
I researched the auto-cleaning cat litter boxes before making this purchase, and I’m very happy with Scoop Free. I purchased it 6 weeks ago, and the first cartridge lasted 1 month (1 cat). Once in a while I have to push the button to re-set the rake, as my curious cat disrupts the automatic operation periodically. I think this will change over time. The cartridges at $15 each are a good value for the ease of use and time savings. I also would recommend the hood/cover to reduce litter scatter. I’ll update if there are any problems.
Not sure there’s anything more to say than that. I had a Littermaid auto box and it was convenient, but the cats were tracking litter around the house. I’ve seen reviews where people complain about hearing the box during the night. I have heard it. But honestly, if someone were to come into your house at night to remove cat waste and leave you free to do other things, can you complain?? It’s like telling a housekeeper to go away and come back later. I live in an old house and it has noises of its own that I tune out. In a few more days I won’t even hear it. My 2 cats are happy and so is my family. Sure, the cats had to investigate the thing like it was a UFO landing, but they caught on in one night. This is a great thing for cat owners.
We have used our new litter box now for 1 month and it has worked exceptionally well. Our cat adjusted to the new box within a couple days after we set it up, and he has not returned to his old litter box since. Clean up after the first month (approx 28 days) was very easy. No more handling of litter! The convenience provided by this product was Well worth the price.
We bought this litter box because we had to move kitty’s box into the office since his room became a nursery. I was worried he wouldn’t adapt to the crystals but we had no transition problems. I LOVE this litter box. There is no odor at all in the office. It is a little more costly to have to replace the tray monthly, but to never have to scoop cat urine or feces again is worth the extra money in my opinion. I would recommend this product to anyone!
I read several reviews of different automatic litter boxes before I bought this one. This litter box is great – my cats are facinated by it. I’ve had it for a couple of months now, and they still run to see it when they hear the rake start to cycle. With two cats (one is very large), I change the trays every two weeks. If you feed your cats high quality cat food, you will not notice any odor until towards the end of the first week. Changing the tray is very easy, and because the sides are so high not very much litter gets out of the box from their paws. This beats all other litter boxes automatic or standard!
So far this is a great product. My cats accepted it instantly, and now three weeks later it is easy to maintain and my small apartment no longer smells like my litterbox!
I like the Scoop Free Litter Box quite a bit. With 4 cats, however, only 2 of them like the box. My foster kittens use it as well, but as some of the reviews state, it’s better to have more than one box when your cat household exceeds 2, as the disposal compartment can quickly fill up.
2 of my cats will not use the box, 1 because she’s scared of the noise when it rakes up the mess (she’s not as scared as she once was, but still won’t use the box), and I’m unsure of the reasoning behind my other cat’s decision.
The refill trays are expensive, but I found and purchased the Forever Litter Tray on ebay for $60, which is well worth it considering the Scoop Free refills are about $15 each.
I’ve not noticed any smell emitting from the box, nor has the box ever jammed.
This is by far the best litter box experience I have had! OK-full disclosure-I’ve only had the ScoopFree a week-but I love it!
It is very quiet, no odor, works perfectly and my cat took to it immediately. My cat had never used crystal litter before but that didn’t seem to matter to her. She recognized it as litter immediately and “used” it.
I’ve read many reviews about this litter box and I have seen that some people have problems with it. I think one reason it is working for me is my cat is not finicky, she is only 8lbs and is a “light user”-meaning she only goes 2-3 times a day and she has never had any issues regarding going outside of a litter box or any other behavior quirks. I’m not saying my cat is perfect, but, if she did have some of those issues, or if I had a multiple cat household, I might think twice about getting the ScoopFree. She had also used a Littermaid for a few years so she was already used to a weird mechanical litter box.
Although my cat is not high maintenance, I am. I will gag if I have to see a dirty litterbox-let alone clean it. And I’m very picky about smell. With this box, I find myself lifting the hood and stirring the crystals-not because it needs it, but because I can’t stay away from this cool contraption with the pretty crystals! It looks perfectly clean all of the time and there are no gag inducing clumps of litter or noxious smells. They really do soak and shrink the bad stuff. I think the cartridge will last at least a full month judging by how almost empty it is now. I’m going to wait out the 90 day return policy and if I’m still happy with it, purchase one of the perma/forever trays to be kinder to the environment. I think ScoopFree should sell those too!
P.S. One gripe: The hood I ordered separately came damaged-not enough to go through the hassle to send it back but enough to make me gripe. Amazon boxed it with no padding or styrofoam.
I bought 2 for my 2 cats, and to my amazement they took to it, and this product works.
I hated the clay, and other previous litter and the horrible dust that they all have.
I read other reviews here on Amazon and bought the FOREVER Litter Tray – Scoop Free cartridge replacement from Rick on Ebay and that eliminates for the replacement cartridges. This FOREVER Litter TRAY is made from PVC plastic for this brand of litter box, and you just get rid of the crystals once a month by putting the “contents” into your trash bag. So if you don’t want to buy and pay for replacement cartridges, this is a wonderful alternative.
It got rid of the smell and the work because this product rakes the “stuff” in about a minute, and waits until the cat has left the area which is about 20 minutes later.
I can’t believe it took me 20 years of the other litter box methods to finally pay about $100 and $60 for the PVC tray, to get a little device that takes care of this horrible job that I hated.
I was nervous at first as my rescue kitty was terrified of the new litter box. He wanted no part of it – he was abused and noises scare him. Luckily he watches his brother who had no issues with it at all. I unplugged it during the day and only ran it while I was home. It only took him a week to relax and get used to it. It is now plugged in at all times and both cats have no problems with the litter box. As for myself, it is very easy to clean out and I am so happy I don’t have to scoop on a daily basis!!
I have been using this product for about a year and it’s saved me so much time and hassle. I only change the cartridge for my cat’s box once a month, and it only takes 5-10 minutes to do so. The litter doesn’t get all over the house, and the odor is also better than with a regular box. Once the sensor wasn’t working quite right, but I wiped it off and it was good as new again.
I really love this litter box. I purchased the hood with it and have had it set up for 2 weeks. With two cats, there is absolutely no odor! My adult cats took very quickly to the new box. For the first few days I would sprinkle some of their regular litter to help them learn. I left the old box up until they were comfortable with this new one.
There are a few drawbacks (that’s why it’s a 4):
Size-this is very large, I had to place in the bathroom for plug in. But with the lid on, it’s not not offending and once again, no smell!
Noise-it is a bit loud when cycling. The first few nights it woke me up (bathroom not far from bedroom) but now I don’t notice it anymore.
Price-the refills are expensive, so I just ordered a Forever litter pan from e-bay. Now I can get the crystals from the store and it’s good to go.
I’m most impressed by the lack of smell! I’ve never used crystals before and now I can’t imagine using anything else. Overall I’m very happy with this purchase.
I’ve had this litter box for over a year and love it! I have two Manx cats which love it as much as I do. I do scoop the litter every other week from the “catch” end and add extra litter to extend the life of the litter cartage. I do feed a good quality indoor cat food which has stopped the stink from the litter box totally. Vistors to my home can’t believe I have indoor cats! I would recomend this product to everyone with indoor cats.
This is awesome. I love it, being able to go on vacation and come back and it not stink to high heaven. (as my mom would say) Why does high heaven stink, is what I want to know? Is it really smelly beyond the stratosphere? At any rate, it was smelly in my apartment, with 2 cats- this box really handled the biz-ness…terds, urine and all. One cat who is younger than a year old, still after 30 days goes to watch it do its cleaning thing everytime it comes on. Its a little louder than I expected, but I really can’t complain, because of how much time and sanity it is saving me. The cartridges cost a lot, but I’ve yet to do the math on if they really cost anymore than regular kitty litter when it all comes down to it over a year – I think they may be about the same
considering the little balls of kittydoo are swept into a section of the tray where they accumulate for a month (we have one cat) and there is no real seal in this area – there is a 1-2 inch gap between the top of the litter & the bottom of the cover for the kittydoo area. Kind of grosses us out, but it seems to work. There is absolutely no urine smell. We still empty out the doo box each week because just knowing what is in there freaks us out. The crystals work amazingly well. The metal grate works very well too – we’ve never had to clean it – nothing gets stuck to it (which we’ve read seems to happen with the “other” product). As far as cats taking to the crystals, we’ve got a very, very finicky cat, and we’ve had problems in the past with different litters. Even stuff our cat seemed to like initially, he’d turn his nose up at after a few weeks. We didn’t do anything special, just set it up, removed the old box, and told our cat it was sink or swim. He used it within 4 hours & has been using it for the 1.5 months we’ve had it with total acceptance. BTW-some reviewers have mentioned that their boxes, on the bottom, seemed to get wet & leak. We’ve read that the mfg. resolved this by coating the box bottoms with a thin coating of plastic. It certainly appears, from our product, that this is what they’ve done to correct this issue. Our cat is very old and a prolific urinator – we had no leakage.
I have been looking for a solution to the “dirty litter box” job for a long time. I just happened to run across the reviews for this product and it sounded like most people were really satisfied with it. I tried the LitterMaid, it was only “just better” than the old manual litter boxes. I was happy to throw it out. The motor actually quit as I was waiting for this one to arrive, I had it for less that a year.
I’m on week 4 of my first cartridge and I couldn’t be happier. No odor and no mess. I have found a few crystals on the floor, but no where near the amount of litter that my cat tracked out of the LitterMaid. Great design, I’ve still found no nooks or crannies that the crystal can collect in the box itself to foul up the operation of the rake, again unlike the LitterMaid.
I’ve told all my cat owning friends about it!
Scoop-free really does keep itself clean. There’s NO scooping, NO cleaning! The boxes seem to work for about a month for 1 1/4 cats, (We have one indoor cat that uses it all the time, and one outdoor cat that uses it occassionally.) With the hood attachment and the litter mat, there are no litter messes all over the floor. With the hood, all the litter stays in the box, where it belongs. I’ve had other so-called self-cleaning litter boxes that were a weekly chore and mess to clean, inside, outside, everywhere. Scoop-free is the REAL DEAL! Only thing is, the bright purple cover doesn’t really go with my decor. But you can’t have everything, I guess. It’s a small price to pay for a clean litterbox! And my cat loves it, too!
It took a couple of weeks for my cats to get used to this new litter box but now they love it and so do I. It is designed very well and is very easy to set up and use. It’s great that the cats have a clean litter pan every time. It’s so good I’m considering buying another one!
We researched all of the poop boxes and decided upon this one because it had the best reviews. We have a 10 week old kitten that took right to the box. I am still not sure if he loves the feel of the crystals, but he uses it for his business. It scooped even the tiniest of his kitten poop. I don’t know if it will last 30 days, but it seems to be working so far with no evidence of malodor. We may consider getting the forever tray that is sold on ebay. But so far, so good.
Although somewhat pricey, this is truly the perfect litterbox for busy people. I don’t have to re-scoop or unclog the unit at all. Tracking is minimal and disposal is extremely easy. There was no period of adjustment..my cat used the new litterbox right away. The cartridge doesn’t really last 30 days — 3 weeks is more accurate, but it sure beats the pants off of LitterMaid.
I did a lot of research before buying this automatic litter box. I have two kittens that eat, sleep, drink, poop and play. They eat and drink a lot. The cartridge lasts two weeks for two cats. No fuss or mess replacing the cartridge. The box works great raking the crystal litter. Unless you have an endless supply of money I would suggest the purchase of a permaliner from another company that’s made to the same specs as the cartridge for about $60.00. With that all you have to do is replace the crystal litter instead of the litter and cartridge. The cats had no problem with the box. The box works perfectly as advertised.
I’ve struggled with many litters and boxes since I adopted my cat last year. She refused to use almost any litter, I had to clean it at least twice a day and I had to change the entire box after 2 days or else she wouldn’t use it, also she started peeing and pooping in dark corners around my apartment, not fun. Something had to change so I bought the Scoop Free self-cleaning litter box.
My cat took to it immediatly, this never happened with any other litter or box. It is small, very easy to put together and I never smell the pee (the poop smells a little for a few minutes but nowhere near as bad as with your average litter). It is kind of loud when it cleans itself but my cats get really excited and its not serious enough to make me dislike the product. I like how the bottom part is disposable so clean-up is really easy. My cat has since stopped peeing and pooping in dark little corners of my home and we are all much happier because of it.
I’ve had this litter box for about 6 months and I LOVE it. I have one small cat and live in a little apartment and I can’t smell the box. I had a regular litter box before I bought this one and I was cleaning it at least 3 times a day and I could still smell it. I can go at least 3 weeks without even touching this box and still not smell it. It is supposed to go for a month and it gets really close, I think it could if I didnt have to have mine in a semi-public area. It is super easy, pretty quiet and it just really works well. The only reason its not perfect is that my cat still drops some litter on the floor on the way out. It is totally worth every penny!
I have two cats and travel a lot for my work. I was previously using normal scoopable litter, but as travel increased, this became a problem. My neighbors take care of my cats – stop in to play/feed every day or every other day (I know – the best neighbors ever!!!). I didn’t think it was fair to ask them to scoop for me too!!! So I started looking for an automatic litter box. Talked to several people about other systems and problems they had. Bought this at Petsmart – based on their 100% satisfaction policy – they will accept a return even after you use it and decide you don’t like it. My first one did stop auto scooping, took it back without a receipt and they replaced no questions asked. Have had no problems since. I buy the cartridges in bulk on line – can’t beat Amazons’ pricing and customer service! Well worth the increase in price from traditional scoop litter.
I have been lookng for a good litter box for a long time. Most of the self cleaning boxes are too costly, bulky and do not have a nice large area for the cat to actually use. This box is exactly what I needed. I just love it!!
We’ve had this litter box in place for about three weeks now, and it works so well that the only way I know the cat is using it is by peeking in the hidden waste holder! I was strongly opposed to getting a kitten, mostly because I had a cat, and kept a litter box, for 15 years and had my fill of THAT! Also, I didn’t have any out-of-the-way place to put a litter box. And we all know that even the most meticulous cat owners with the best out-of-the-way set-up still have that ‘litter box’ smell in their homes! This box is sitting in the hallway right outside my office door–but I never smell anything! It’s almost like NOT having a litter box. The kitten had no problem getting used to it–we transitioned from clumping litter in a typical litter pan, to shredded paper (when he lost those front claws!), to the Scoop Free with crystal litter. We had the scoop free available along with the old clumping litter box until he got declawed–he was a little leary of the Scoop Free, but did use it a few times in addition to continuing to use the other litter pan. Then we just took it away, gave him shredded paper in the ‘manual’ litter box while he healed. Then I took away the shredded paper litter box (which he no doubt hated) and replaced it with the Scoop Free.
This is really a great product, and I appreciate all the other reviews that helped me make the decision to buy it. It is very well designed and easy to work with. No smell at all. And has had no glitches at all while we’ve had it. I think a big part of its success is the crystal litter–this might be great to try even if you have one of the other auto-litter boxes or just a litter pan.
I’ve only been using this for a little over a week, but this is a great invention for cat owners. Day to day schedules can be so hectic, cleaning the litterbox is just one more chore that can be skipped. And the odor control is a big plus. The only question I might have at all, is with the scooping taking place at regular intervals and the claim that the cartridge only need be emptied about once a month for one cat, will I need to add crystals before that time? It just remains to be seen, but so far am extremely pleased with this purchase.
I purchased this litterbox for my 2 cats right before I left for a month on vacation. I left their other 2 litterboxes out just in case they decided not to use this new box. I am pleased to say that they are both using the new box. I replaced the cartridge on January 10th, and I clean out the waste from underneath the flap about 3 times a week. I will need to replace the cartridge in about 5 days. The machine is great because I no longer have to scoop out 2 litterboxes every day. The garage smells much better too! I highly recommend this product. The only downside is that the cartridges cost too much.
I live in a one bedroom apartment and this thing is a godsend! No matter what room the litter box was in, it managed to stink up the ENTIRE apartment. Not anymore!
I really like the crystal litter (it does a better job of odor control than clay litter)and I’m so happy I don’t have to scoop anymore. I hated that job and after scooping, the clumps went into my wastebasket, where they just sat for days and continued to stink up the apartment. The crystal litter dries everything out, so no smell at all.
I really like the litter cartridges, too. I used to have to haul bags of cat litter up three flights of stairs and the cartridges have eliminated that task. They are a bit pricey, but they last a long time and they just work so well.
The box is a really nice size. I had an automatic litter box before and it was huge and took up lot of space. This is nicely compact, but large enough for my 18lb cat (I know, ridiculous. He’s big boned.) The motor is totally quiet, too.
I RECEIVED MY LITTER BOX ONLY 3 DAYS AGO, BUT I CAN ALREADY TELL IT IS THE BEST LITTER BOX IN THE MARKET AND IT WAS ALOT CHEAPER THAN ANY OTHERS AND IT HAD THE BEST REVIEWS, I HAVE A 7 MONTH OLD KITTEN AND HE LLLOOOVVVEES IT, BEFORE I EVEN FINISHED PUTTING THE LITTER IN IT, HE WAS USING IT! AND HE LOVES TO WATCH IT WHEN IT STARTS SCOOPING, THE SMELL CONTROL IS PRETTY GOOD AND IT EVENS IT SELF OUT WELL. AND FOR ALL OF YOU OUT THERE THAT ARE SAYING IT GOOD BUT THE REFILLS ARE EXPENSIVE, LISTEN UP…..I BOUGHT WHATS CALLED A FOREVER LITTER TRAY ON EBAY FOR 50 BUCKS AND ITS JUST LIKE THE REFILLS BUT THIS ONE IS PLASTIC AND WILL LAST A LONG TIME AND I BOUGHT 12 LBS OF CRYSTAL LITTER THATS ABOUT A 3-4 MONTH SUPPLY FOR ONE CAT FOR 13 BUCKS!!!! SO IF YOU HAVE A LOT OF CATS OR WANNA SAVE STOP BUYING THE REFILLS, AND BUY THE FOREVER TRAY, SUPER FAST SHIPPING AND 100 CUSTOMER SATISFACTION…..
We have really enjoyed this product. No more daily scooping of stinky kitty poo or clumping litter. The machine just scoops it up and locks it away. We have a small cat about 1 year old. We do have to change the litter more than the advertisment suggets to keep it fresh smelling. We change it about once a week. We have a system were we just dump everything out of the tray into the trash then refill the tray with a bag of Fresh Step crystals. We replace the actual tray about once a month. This is a little cheaper than replacing the whole tray every week, but still so much easier than scooping stinky poo.
Well, I wasn’t sure that this product would be that great. I was afraid that it would start stinking and that my rather large cat with humongous poops would make this cat box seem like a pipe dream. I was wrong. I’ve now owned it for a month and have had no problems with smells and it works like a charm! Yes it can be a little loud when the rake does its thing but its not bad and when my cat hears the rake start working, he runs downstairs to watch it move.
And as a side note, at first I thought the cartridges were a little pricey but when I figured out how much I spent on kitty litter per month, I realized that the difference in price was about $10 per month. I’m more than willing to spend $10 a month to not have to clean the litter box every day. And the clean up once a month is a piece of cake and not the icky experience changing the litter out of a regular litter box. There’s been times I just wanted to throw the old litter box away rather than clean it.
I have never owned a cat in my life-the main reason? The litter box. I didn’t want my house to smell like an animal OR like litter (the scent is so strong!) I didn’t want to have to buy tubs of litter, liners, etc. so this is a perfect solution for me. I still clean out the compartment every other day or so (I just like it to be extra clean) but what a great product?!
Seeing as I only interact my own “business” as a matter of cleanliness, I’m not thrilled about playing with my cats’. I have tried numerous different automatic scoopers over the years, and this is the ONLY one that has lasted more than a couple weeks. Sure, you get all excited when you shell out 100+ bucks in the hopes of being free of this disgusting chore, but over time (and not much time at that) the other self scoopers break down. Most of them sounded like a car wreck in progress by the end of their tenure (more like ten-week). This one has not failed me yet! It’s quiet, it’s self contained, it’s pretty. Your cats will be proud to poop in these. Sure, the cost of the refill cartridges is a bit high, but frankly, I’m willing to pay it as are thousands of others because it’s SO worth it. As far the smell factor- I have yet to encounter ANY odor other than when it was time to change the cartridge. Get a whiff on ammonia? Change the cartridge! Seems pretty simple to me.
In the end- buy it, set it up, plug it in and WALK AWAY. Awesome. Just awesome.
Our cat had no trouble adjusting to the new litter box. We put a little bit of his old litter in, which did cause more of the litter to get pushed into the trap door. My husband stirs the litter about twice a week. We’ve been using it for almost a month and are very satisfied. We just got a new kitten and were told he cannot use an automatic litter box until he weighs at least five pounds.
I have owned a few other automatic litter boxes before this one and I have never been so happy with one like this. So far it’s been the cleanest, easiest and most reliable cat box I’ve ever owned.
Like I’ve read in other reviews, maybe it’s only downfall is how expensive the cartridges are but the fact that it is so much easier to change, cleaner to handle, the smell is almost completely contained definately makes up for it to me.
I would 100% recommend this litter box to anyone who love their cats but hates the chore of changing the litter box!
For as long as the cats liked it, this litter box was great. After about 6 months though, they didn’t like it anymore, and switched back to the regular old litter box. Obviously I should have gotten rid of the old litter box! I’m going to try again, though.
Move over sliced bread, there’s a new “best invention ever”! I have 2 cats and have been using a Littermaid for several years. I bought the newest Littermaid model when mine died and it was worse than the first. I should have believed the terrible reviews! It literally scooped up nothing. For several months I have been scooping the Littermaid 1-2 times A DAY and litter was tracked all through the house. I set up my Scoopfree box 8 days ago and my cats took to it immediately. I find myself checking on it daily (I had to with the Littermaid) and every day I am still in disbelief that after 8 days it is clean. I haven’t touched it for 8 days and counting and the crystals are not getting tracked everywhere! Look no further, you have found THE ONE!
I don’t know who likes the box more. me or my cats. Two boxes two cats. You gotta love it!!!!!
This has been the best $105 dollars I have spent on my cat. Didn’t need to train him, he used it right away. Just put it in the same spot at the regular box. There is no more smelly cat poo. The refills are a bit expensive, but this is a well worth it product.
I have 3 cats and this scoopfree litter box works very well. With 3 cats
I have another “regular litter box” as well. 2 of my cats are Bengals so
they are very moody anyway and dont like change, but they adjusted just fine and they all 3 use both boxes. The cartridges are too expensive, I have invested in the forever litter box tray that can be found on ebay. This is great! Too bad scoopfree couldnt come up with this solution. The
cartridges are just too expensive to use if you have more than 1 cat!

We were very cautious on getting a automated litter box. After looking around and reading countless reviews, we decided on trying the Scoop Free box. We were pleasantly surprised on how well it works. We have three cats and got one box to try and make sure the cats would use it. After 24 hours, they were using this box over the other 3 litter boxes. There is no smell of any kind, the litter absorbs any odors. When the motor starts, it is the most interesting thing to them and they will all sit there and watch it.
Overall it is a very good investment and I would recommend it to anyone with a cat.
This box works wonderfully for me and my kitty. I’ve had no problems with odor, unless I wait too long to change it, and the cat has no complaints. I’ve never had problems with it puddling up under the box. Disposal is quick and simple. I had returned a new “improved” Littermaid because it didn’t work, so this was my last real automatic option. To save yourself the trouble, get this first. The new Littermaids are crap.
i am 70 yrs young.have 4 cats and is so awesome to have these litter boxes.it was so hard for me to get BIG boxes of litter in the house.i have 2 of these and are virtualy care free.love em love em.
This thing is awesome! It has performed above the my expectations. Ensure you change to trays as directed, but it does a superb job of cleaning the litter box. I have two cats and they both use the box without any issues.
I received the Scoop Free litter box about one week ago. It has been wonderful! My cat took to it right away, which is unusual as she can be a bit skittish. I have it in the master bedroom, as the cat won’t go anywhere else right now. I don’t hear it or smell it! I’m glad I finally did the research and tried the scoop free. I won’t go back now!
THIS BOX WORKS WELL,IS ODOR FREE AND IS A REAL LABOR SAVER.I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS PRODUCT.
I was VERY hesitant to by an automated litter box but I have had mine well OVER A YEAR now and it is still going strong. My cat is one of those “STINKY” cats that can clear the room at our little house after she uses the litter box … this did not get rid of that totally but it helped a LOT! I do find that in the 30 days my cat uses the box so much that I DO have to scoop 1 time about halfway through the month. A LARGE improvement from scooping daily to just once a month! I think it is great … as far as litter bow duty goes! LOL!
I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER LITTERBOX EVER AGAIN! THIS IS THE BEST LITTERBOX THAT I HAVE EVER SEEN IN MY LIFE. IT IS VIRTUALLY MAINTENANCE FREE. IF MINE BROKE, I WOULD GO OUT TOMORROW AND BUY ANOTHER ONE. I HAD A LITTERMAID, AND THEN ANOTHER LITTERMAID, AND THEN I BOUGHT THIS. NO COMPARISON! IF YOU HATE CLEANING YOUR CAT’S LITTERBOX, THIS IS THE PRODUCT FOR YOU.
We did a lot of research on automatic litter boxes and decided on the scoopfree. We have been using it for about 3 weeks and no problems. We were worried that it would start to smell, but it doesn’t. We can’t detect any odor. Our cat seemed to take to the crystals fine. We left his old litterbox out for a while and just didn’t clean it, and then took it away after 2-3 days and he has been fine. He loves to watch the cleaning cycle. I would definitely recommend this product.
This litter box is amazing! We have had it 3 weeks and the only time I have touched it is to check if it is getting full, and its not even close. (I have 1 4 year old cat) I had the Littermaid electric box for 3 years and the motor died. It was always a mess. I tried every type of premium clumping litter, including the ones they recommended and still had jams and sludge on the bottom that I was constantly cleaing out. The Scoop Free comes with its own litter that is made of blue crystals, no clay, no clumping. The crystals absorb the urine immediately. Not one drop on the bottom of the pan! and then sweeps the solids into a well and then you throw away the whole thing after a month. mSo glad my other one died or I would not have been looking for this product! We can actually go on vacation for a long weekend and not have to worry about getting someone to come over to empty the litter box! Will try to write again in a month or so to let you know if it is still working as well as it is now. It is worth the expense. Don’t forget you won’t be buying litter (as it comes with) when justifying buying this litter box.
This thing is a life saver. It doesn’t make me embarassed when people visit my home and I haven’t cleared out the litter box yet.
I recommend this to all cat owners.
My mother bought this for me as a gift, and was hesitant because it wasn’t the litter box she had… but I insisted (at first b/c I liked the colors), but later b/c I’d read the reviews of the other brand vs. this brand… and I have to agree- it’s great. It’s not loud, the cat isn’t terrified of it, and the litter smell is absent from the house, which is awesome! Best part- the dog can’t find any more kitty cookies…. which everyone loves =)
i decided to order this litter box from amazon #1 because of the lower price and #2 because i can trust amazon to provide me with the greatest service ever…the box got here in two days!!!!!! the cats are liking it and it will be the easiest and cleanest( no dust flying everywhere when you refill) ever
hope you choose this one …we did a lot of online research and this is FIVE stars EVERYWHERE …..get busy and order this today
a happy owner of the SCOOPFREE..;)
We gave this to my elderly mother for Christmas this year. She loves her kitty dearly but dealing with the litter box was becoming too much for her. So far everything is working as promised with the Scoop Free box, there is no discernible smell, and kitty adjusted immediately (we also bought the hood and the Forever tray, on ebay, so she won’t have to order the disposable cartridges). Set-up was very easy. All parts fit together easily.
If problems occur I will revisit this review for update, but so far, it’s a winner.
Two months later ….. all going well! Cat adjusted readily, Mom adjusted readily. Changing out to new litter was daunting the first time, but I think we’ve got the kinks worked out (place the cartridge with the dirty litter into a garbage bag, shake out the litter, then hose off and clean, wipe dry — easy to reassemble).
This is the best purchase for my kitty. I love it, wish I had gotten it long ago. You don’t have to scoop for 30 days, awesome. I read a lot of reviews on different automatic litter boxes before getting this one and it seemed Scoop Free had the best reviews. I’m glad I went with this brand, it has been great. If you don’t like scooping the litter, this is the one for you.
After several replacements of littermaid boxes, I was about to give up and go back to a non automatic box. When I saw the ad for the scoop free box, I changed my mind & decided to give it a try. The box itself does work as advertised. The motor is fairly quiet and the only real noise when it is running is when the rake flips over. Clogging and sticking are not a problem.
The reason I can’t give this five stars is the disposable pans. The area for solid waste is much too small. With two cats it needs to be cleaned out every 3 or 4 days to avoid overflow & maintain some kind of odor control. I also find that sprinkling the cardboard box with baking soda or a dry litterbox deodorizer before adding the crystals helps. Yes it is expensive to replace the cartridge every 10 days, but it still beats any other method of dealing with cat waste I have found.
Well, first off, my cat was a tad picky, so it took her a couple of weeks to get used to this thing. I’ve never used Fresh Step litter, which is WAYY different from the conventional clumping Tidy cat type litters….. Once I lured her in with her old litter, she’s accepted it and it’s great. My cat doesn’t always cover her poo’s, so my main goal with this was to get them covered automatically. This has worked great!
DON’T wait 3 or 4 weeks to empty the thing. I think if you go in and scoop the poop once a week, the cartridge will last a couple months. Just keep some Fresh Step on hand to fill it a bit when you need to. My regular litter works ok, but the pee clumps break apart when the rake hits it….It works way better on the Fresh Step…which it was designed to use I guess. The only way this thing could leak is if you left it for a month unattended. That’s too rediculous. This covers the stink and rakes things smooth, but it’s not maintainance free. Overall it’s a great improvement over a regular box.
Update….It’s been several months now, and I love this thing. It’s never failed to work right. BUT, you have to scoop once a week, otherwise it’s packed with poop! I get no more poop smells from uncovered waste. Also, the crystal litter doesn’t clump, but absorbs the pee, so after a week, it starts to get a little stank. If you try to use regular litter that clumps, the rake will break it apart. Weekly, I just scoop the poop container, and then scoop up the area she pees in most and pour some fresh litter in. The tray lasts for a couple months that way. I have no problem with liquid getting thru the bottom of the tray at all that way.
I detest dealing with litter boxes. I had been using a regular old fashioned clay-based litter for a few years, but decided it was time to upgrade. With two cats, it was a constant battle to keep the box clean and non-smelly.
I read reviews of many auto-boxes and found this one to have the overall best, so decided to give it a try.
It was easy to put together, and there is so little ‘litter’ compared to the 20 lb bags I had to haul into the house on a weekly basis.
After following instructions how how to get your cat used to the new box, things went fine. Cats immediately took to it and no problems whatsoever.
I only have two things to note.
1) Website says “whisper quiet, like the low hum of a refrigerator running”. ha! If my refrigerator sounded like that, I would unplug it and call for service immediately. It’s loud. But it works well. So I’ll put it with it.
2) Litter availability. It concerns me a bit that the only place I can buy the special litter cartidges is online. I went ahead and bought a 6 months supply so I don’t have to worry with it, but I just hope they stay in business, otherwise the box will be useless.
My cats are large – just not Maine Coon large. As far as ordinary domestic cat size, two of my five cats are large. And consequently, I go through the cartridges faster than 2/15 days. Even so, I rate this highly because my cats immediately adapted to using this system without *mistakes.* There is *no* odor or fragrance! I also discovered great relief in ridding my house and myself of the heavy bags of litter and the scattering messes I, the cats, and the hole-y bags had always made.
I would change my review to 5 of 5 stars if Amazon allowed at this time.
I love this as does my cat.. there is one issue.. the odor control is not great.. but not horrid I use ever clean litter so I sprinkle a little in with the crystals from time to time (only a handful) even though the instructions tell you not too… simply because it scoops the litter to the end and doesnt close all the way (for the woman who said use the press and seal that cant work since all the poop is at the end of the box.. you can only fit so much in.., however you can empty it out before it becomes full to reuse.. its not a big deal since it is all dried out by this time… the press and seal but it might be a good idea for leakage (so far I have not see this problem) but I cant see reusing the box.. however having it cleaned for you is a nice feature… and I found it worth the investment over all.. so far no problems.. and I didnt find it loud at all.. it has a slight hum like a low motor..
People that complain about the smell make me wonder what they are feeding their cats.. I have a maine coon and a siamese and I dont have this issue. ALSO I have been very happy to find a guy on ebay who does something called the “forever litter box” (You can search him under various things such as scoop free cartridge etc} if you order one of those no more cartridge replacements just clean this one out when needed and replace the litter which you can find at target or walmart
This is a strange, strange product that works well. I have had it about a week now. So far I’m liking it and the cats are absolutely fascinated. For some reason when the humming motor engages (it’s pretty quiet) they dash into the bathroom to observe its mysterious movements. Either very zen or my cats are very bored. At any rate…with two adult male cats I think this thing will last about 10 days at best but that’s fine with me. Before I was attending to the cat box on an almost daily basis and then doing a thorough washing out once a week. With this device I will change the cartridge once every week and a half and that’s a good improvement in my quality of life. The cartridges are expensive. I am hopeful some clever person will just decide to make and offer for sale a permanent plastic tray that we can dump crystals into. Until then, it’ll be two trays a month for us and a lot less hassle than we are used to around here. So…I think it’s worth it. Wish it wasn’t the silly purple color but otherwise I am pleased with it.
I have used self-cleaning cat boxes for many years and this one is superior is two important ways: 1) it really doesn’t smell and 2) it really is self-cleaning up until you need to change the box. We have one large cat, indoor only, and one refill lasts about three weeks tops. You can “freshen” it changing out some litter to get a little longer life, but the size of the waste catch tray also dictates the capacity. My only two complaints: 1) price, but I figure it won’t be long before someone else makes a similar product and drives the price down some and 2) the cardboard box that holds the litter is not moisture-resistant enough and after three weeks, we get leaking. The refill box top fits under the entire refill when “installed.” This is to keep the box top handy so you can cover it up and throw it out. However, the bottom of the box is not water-tight enough and leaks through. I have put plastic under the entire box unit, but the leakage makes it difficult to remove the box top to cover the refill for disposal since you don’t really want to uncover the bottom of the box. A simple solution is a sheet of platic as a liner between the box top and the box bottom, but for the price, this problem should be solved by Scoop Free. Still, for the odor control alone, it’s worth it to me.
So far, I like it! It does what I expected and our new kitten began using it immediately, prefered it over the old litter box. Our other adult cat is still leery of it, a bit scared of the mechanism I think, but she’s gotten in/out on her own so I think she’ll use it once we finish phasing out her old box. One thing we found is that it doesn’t work with kitten diarrhea (yuk) but I wouldn’t really expect it to, so I’m not terribly disappointed and hopefully that’s a short-term situation. The cord is 10 ft but I wish it were just a bit longer, to provide more options for where to put it (and to be able to hide the cord along the baseboard, etc.) but I could probably rig up an extension cord. No complaints really — overall it’s great!
I got this three months ago for my aging cat with litter box usage issues. She hated it immediately and now won’t use any box at all. Sigh. So I moved it downstairs for my young male.
He uses it well, but he overshoots the sides so I bought the pricey lid. This makes a big box enormous, but it is a pretty color and anyway it is downstairs, so who cares?
The crystals come in a big awkward tray, but it is fairly easy to maintain. The crystals do smell after a couple of weeks — my cat is fairly normal sized (11 pounds) and he goes outside, but it still smells. The stools also smell after a bit if you are in the same room, so if this were in a bathroom or kitchen I’d certainly clean it every couple of weeks. I cannot find refills in the stores, even the big chains, and it is expensive to order them by mail, so this would be prohibitive if I had to change this out more often.
The tray is awkward, heavy and floppy, so getting it into the trash without spilling is a trick. On the other hand, I have not experienced any trouble with the rakes — they don’t need cleaning, they work as they were designed to, and the cat just thinks the hum the machine makes is mildly interesting.
Over all, the product does what it says it does, and it has improved my quality of life by making litter maintenance an occasional ordeal and not a daily one.
This works great. Doesn’t last 30 days, though, especially if your cat is large or you have more than 1 cat. If you don’t change the cartridge on time, it’ll leak through, and I keep a large piece of plastic beneath it. It’s not scoop free. I often remove the solid waste from the storage area to prolong the refill cartridge, which is expensive. Had 2, but the cost forced me to go back to 1. You can save a few dollars by dumping out the crystals before the box starts to get saturated and replacing with a new 4 lb. bag of Fresh Step Crystals. The smell of saturated crystals is awful, so don’t let it get to that point.
If only the cartriges lasted an entire month, but in the long run, this product is better than any of the other self-clearners I’ve tried. It may be because my little girl is still a kitten that the cartridge is only lasting two weeks.
We have ’stirred’ as instucted on the sheet that comes with the unit, and that certainly helps. And they do warn you that kittens, for some reason, will need an earlier change cycle. Still, I do appreciate the product. I have asthma, and if there were dust involved, I could not use this product, but happily, there is NONE.
As someone else stated, it’s quiet, and though its footprint is larger than a ‘normal’ litterbox, it’s not so large that you cannot find a place to house it.
Is it worth it? I would say that if you get this product, you will, on average, be happy.
My little guy is very particular about the cleanliness of his box. If we don’t keep it clean as a whistle, he’ll let you know that he’s not happy with you by leaving lovely little presents by the door. Soon, kitty had marked the front hallway so much that he actually PREFERRED to go number one there no matter how clean his box was.
Not a great situation by any means. I realized that, try as we might, it wasn’t humanly possible to keep the litter box as clean as kitty wanted so some sort of mechanical box would be required. First I thought of buying a Littermaid, but I read such horrible reviews about it that I didn’t care to try it for myself.
Based on the reviews I read, the biggest problem with most self-cleaning cat boxes is that the rakes just aren’t powerful enough to dig out all of the big, heavy clumps. This isn’t really an issue with the Scoop Free because of the crystal litter (which doesn’t clump.) Instead, the Scoop Free sweeps away the solid waste into a covered compartment, where it begins to dehydrate and shrink. On the way back to its starting position, the metal rake evens out the crystals so kitty has a smooth surface for his inevitable return. Sometimes there’s a stray piece of poop stuck to the rake, but that’s pretty much the only problem we have had with this machine.
I really can’t say enough good things about this machine. The odor control is amazing because the poop is kept covered. Also, I have found that crystal litter works best for absorbing yucky smells. The only reason we weren’t using crystals in kitty’s old litterbox was that the clumping litter was so much more convenient for cleaning with a traditional scooper.
Kitty took to his new box right away. We mixed a little bit of his old litter with the crystals so he would feel more comfortable with the new smells. When we caught him using the Scoop Free a few hours later, we gave him lots of praise and treats. We had to do some extra things to break kitty’s habbit of peeing by the door (lots of enzyme cleaner and a new plastic runner over the carpet) but now kitty is doing all of his business in his super-clean Scoop Free and we’re all getting along much better.
However, I’m not going to give this product five stars because of the disposable cartridges that it uses. You can’t see this from the product pics, but the Scoop Free doesn’t actually have a bottom. Basically, your cat is going potty in a laminated cardboard box with a little compartment at one end for his waste. You really can’t beat the convenience of never having to deal with poop (just lift away the Scoop Free, cover the entire disposable cartridge with the included lid, and toss in the garbage) but I find the price of these cartridges to be a bit exorbitant and it can be very hard to find them in stores. Not to mention that it’s not very friendly to the environment. I had also heard that some people had problems with their cats clawing through the bottom of the cartridge, however I didn’t encounter that problem.
If you’re going to get a Scoop Free (and I heartily endorse it) be sure to get a Forever Tray (what I bought) or a Permascoop from eBay. They are exactly the same as the disposable cartridges, just made out of plastic. You will save LOTS of money in the long run (currently, the best price you’ll get is a pack of 6 cartridges for $100 here on Amazon) but the up-front cost is about $60. Also, having a permanent box means that you’ll occasionally have to scoop out the poop from the covered compartment–I usually do it once every two weeks or so. And you’ll need to empty out the box and clean it out a bit when the crystals need to be changed. I do this about once a month.
While we’re big fans of Scoop Free in my house, you should definitely get a Forever Tray to go along with it.
I’ve had this device for a month an a half. I have one elderly cat that used to be an outdoor cat (with shed and garage access) that I decided needed to be an indoor cat in her old age. She’s fine, in great shape, and not acting like going out is something she really needs to do. So, her first week “in” was last Thanksgiving. I did the litterbox thing in my bedroom because of company. It worked ok, except it stunk! And, I really needed to empty or shovel it every day. What a stinky waste of time.
This device is a tad larger than I would like. The Fresh-step works fine but does sometimes get on the cat’s paws and find its way out of the box. Not really a large problem…it vacuums right up. The really cool thing is there is no odor…until that day when it’s time to change the cartridge. Now, I do think with some extra Fresh Step, cartridges can be reused. Some other reviews said their cardboard became saturated…never did mine. I’ve had it for seven weeks. I’ve changed the cartridge two times. No smell, the cat took to it instantly, relatively quiet, even if your cat has to use it in the middle of the night. If you like having cats around and don’t like smell or daily litter box tending…this thing works very well. I’ve got a couple of other cats that will be migrating into the house and plan to get at least one more of these litter systems.
It works, it’s not cheap, but honestly, to get three to four weeks per cartridge when I would have gone through that many old-style clumping bags with all the daily mucking-out that’s involved, it’s about the same cost, with far less hassle.
If you like having cats indoors and hate shovelling cat poop, this thing works just fine. I gave it four stars because it is a tad large and the litter does sometimes get scattered around the box (I think they sell a cover but I don’t have one.). It’s not perfect, but it works great.
I love this litter box. When we moved recently my two cats were forced to stay inside for a week and weren’t used to having a litter box, but they took to this immediately. I have stirred it on occasion and have manually emptied the hard waste to extend the life, but it’s been three weeks with two cats and we are still on the first cartridge. I’ll admit, though, that it’s time to change.
I’ve tried every automatic litter box that’s out there, but this one is the only one I’ve kept. The others were more work than hand scooping, but this is like a miracle. Since the refills are so expensive, I’ve decided to try PermaScoop, a permanent litter box made to fit scoop free. It will save big money in the long run.
I bought this hoping it would better deal with one of my cat’s smelly output than clumping litter. It does have a better rake movement than the Littermaid (this replaced a 7-yr-old Littermaid), it was very easy to clean the frame, and it dealt with smell well. Unfortunately, my 23 lb cat seems to have a bladder the size of a grapefruit, and I found that I had to change the trays too often for my pocketbook. The cartridge was also too big for my small, narrow garbage bin, making it a challenge to get rid of — I had to put it in a big plastic bag and bend it in half lengthwise. (I would have figured out something better eventually…) My big cat also tends to perch on the edges of the litterbox (even though this is generously sized; he perches no matter how big the box is), and sometimes he’d knock off the purple lid that lifts to trap the scooped stuff. Easy enough to replace, but the clatter always scared him and I was worried he’d stop using it. I do think it’s a well-designed product, just not for big beasties like mine.
I bought the Scoop Free for my new Savannah. He’s six months old and had been raised on pine litter. I used some Dr Elsey’s Cat Attract litter, first mixed in with the old pine litter, and then I added a small mound on top of the crystals in the Scoop Free. After I threw out the remains of the old pine litter and refilled his old tray with just Dr Elsey’s he switched over to using the Scoop Free. The transition was fairly quick really and probably would have been faster still were it not for the fact that he was also adjusting to his new home.
After a couple of weeks I changed the refill. The old litter was starting to get a bit worse for wear, and I suspected that the Dr Elsey’s (which is a clumping litter) probably wasn’t helping the unit to function at it’s best.
One interesting aside is that the new cartridge has a plastic sheet stuck to the bottom of the tray. I’m sure that the original one didn’t have that and I presume it’s a response to some of the criticisms that people have had of the unit (the cardboard getting wet and scratched up).
I believe it’s been about 10 days since I changed cartridge and tonight I saw that some solid waste had not been swept in to the storage area after a cycle. I ran the machine manually and the waste was swept up properly this time, but the lid of the waste storage section was no longer going down completely. Raising the lid showed that this was the result of the waste receptacle being full. Taking a scoop I removed a significant amount of the material (the dried out nature of the waste makes this fairly easy) to make space for more. I should get quite a few more days of use (or at least my cat should) out of the cartridge now.
Of course the whole point of the machine is that this kind of scooping is supposed to be eliminated. While scooping is definitely reduced, my experience suggests that without some work the life of the cartridges is
very short. This is due to the simple fact that the waste section is just too small.
If this over-filling problem occurs after 10 days with a six months old cat, what is it going to be like with a full grown one? Okay, he’s a Savannah, which means he’s already bigger than some fully-grown cats, but he’s not that big yet (maybe Savannahs produce more poop, I don’t know)!
I would still recommend this unit because it certainly is lower maintenance than a conventional litter box. However, as many have already pointed out, the 30 day claim is way off what you can really expect to get. The other word of caution is the unit has a very large footprint which makes it more difficult to find a suitable location than for a conventional tray. While that is to be expected to some degree, it did turn out to be larger than I had anticipated.
He’s a few suggestions for how the machine could be improved:
1) Larger waste receptacle (preferably by making it taller, so the footprint isn’t increased even further).
2) The rake should be Teflon coated.
3) The rake mesh should be finer and a 2D mesh. Flattened out lumps are able to rotate and slip between the grids.
4) It should have an optional odor eliminator can that fire off a little spray at the end of the cleaning cycle (not a masking air freshener, but a proper odor eliminator). Alternatively it could have a fan and an activated carbon filter to help clean the air. The add on can or filter would even allow the manufacturer to make more money!
I replaced my old, broken LitterMaid with a new Scoop Free Self-Cleaning Litter Box 2 months ago, and I’ve been really impressed with how well it works – it really is pretty much maintenance-free (aside from stiring around the crystals periodically). I think the motor is a little bit quieter than the LitterMaid, and it doesn’t seem to get stuck the way the LitterMaid often did. The litter tray replacement cartridges are expensive and so far I have not seen them in any local stores so I order from Amazon (free shipping). Also, I change the litter tray more frequently than it says you have to. I think it says for one cat you can let it go a month – no way! I change mine about every 10-14 days.
Surprisingly, my older cat adapted to the crystal litter right away, however my younger cat won’t have anything to do with the new box. I tried all of the tips in the Scoop Free instruction book to entice her to try out the new box (mixing clumping sand litter in with the crystals, letting her regular litter box get really dirty so she’s forced to try out the new (clean) box, etc.), but she’s still not interested. I think she doesn’t like the “crunchy” noise the crystals make when she steps into the box. Oh well – my older cat, who is very picky about having a clean litter box, loves it, so I’m happy with my purchase.
This is a replacement of my first automated litterbox, the LitterMaid. That box lasted for a long time, but was always very loud and a nightmare to clean.
This one is easy to clean. However, the replacement trays do not last more than a week. I have 2 cats, though. One is close to 20 pounds and the other slightly over 10 pounds. They are also on a special urinary tract diet, so it causes them to pee a lot more. I end up having to change the tray weekly. That is the ONLY reason this rating isn’t 5 stars. It’s just expensive to keep up.
However, I don’t procrastinate as much as I did with the old one because it is just so easy. There is NO scooping and I don’t have to clean out a tray every day like I was doing before either. I really can leave it for a week without a care.
The litter box is good if you have a cat that does not scratch. My cat sometimes tears up the box with her claws so I have to keep an eye on her and the box for leaking and holes. Other then that the chystals are excellent for odor.
I bought this litter box 3 months ago and had a bit of a hard time with my younger cat acclimating. He finally did – however I had another issue and decided to return it on the 90 day free trial. I sent an e-mail to Scoop Free and I can’t say enough good things about the service I received. They answered all e-mails promptly and made it extremely easy to return the item even though I had disposed of the original packaging. Usually under these circumstances I expect a bit of a hassle – NONE whatsoever – they couldn’t have been nicer. I like the litter box so much that I went on a forum and found a fix for my problem and decided to keep it. My point is if you have any doubts give it a try – you’ve got nothing to lose.
This litter box works as advertised. I get 3 to 4 weeks out of the system before I have to change to a new cartridge. That is with one cat of course. It works efficiently and very rarely misses any bowel movements left by my cat. This is the best one on the market and is available at a reasonable price.
After many arguements regarding cat litter (and frequency of changing said cat litter) we decided to invest in the Scoop Free. We previously owned a Littermaid a couple years ago which eventually died so we wanted an automatic litter box but didn’t really want another Littermaid. After reading reviews online decided to give this one a try. It is WAY better than a littermaid! The components appear to be higher quality, the design is better and the scooping is much quieter. I am so surprised that Littermaid is so common and the ScoopFree is not easily available because the ScoopFree is much more impressive. The box is rather large but the design is very intelligent and really does prevent you from having to come in contact with any cat poop. The litter it uses is amazingly well at keeping the “cat pee smell” from being detected even when you’re close to the box. We also purchased the hood which I would recommend if you’re planning on placing it in a highly visible area. We actually have ours in the corner of the eat-in kitchen and it’s not a bother. The only con with this product is the cost of replacement cartridges so I recommend you be prepared for the ongoing cost. Also, I believe it said with two cats it will last 10 to 14 days but we’re lucky to get 10 days out of it so don’t expect much more unless your cats just don’t go alot.
This is definitely the best litter box I’ve ever owned, but don’t be fooled into thinking you can go weeks or even days without scooping. I still need to scoop the #2 either daily or every other day to keep it from smelling. It just collects in the back of the box under the flap, but that can’t hold all the smell in. I would recommend this product, just don’t think you can get away with only maintaining it weekly or monthly.
I have 2 male cats (one is 10 lbs, the other a whopping 20 lbs). Before I bought the Scoop Free Self-Cleaning Litter Box, I had to scoop at least once a day, sometimes twice. Now, I only have to mess with the litter box about every week and a half. The packaging says one cartridge can last 2 cats up to 15 days, but mine starts to get a little gross by about 11 days.
Even though the cartridges are pricey, it’s so nice not dealing with it everyday! I think the extra cost is worth the convenience.
It’s not my kitties’ favorite litter box (I still keep a box on our balcony w/clumping litter for when they are lounging out there). I think the crystal litter is still strange to them. If I had to do it over again, I’d transition them over to crystal litter first, and then set up the Scoop Free. Regardless, it’s still worked out great for me!
I definitely recommend getting the hood and carpet too. They definitely keep the little crystals from going everywhere (alleviating another former task of sweeping/vacuuming everyday). The hood does seem a little low for my larger cat, but he adapts pretty well.
I would give this five stars, except my cartridges only last 11 days or so, and every once in a while poop gets stuck behind the rake. I just slip a plastic baggie over my hand and toss it in front of the rake for the next time it sweeps. Sure it’s gross, but it’s a lot less gross than scooping everyday.
If you don’t mind paying extra for convenience, and your cats adapt pretty well to new situations, I highly recommend it.
It also does do a very good job of containing the smell. Just in case kitty leaves a particularly smelly deposit, you can push the button and it will rake sooner than the 20 minutes that are programmed. Also, a sticking an air freshener on top of the hood helps, and I also recommend Febreze Air Effects Pet Odor Eliminator.
This works great, once the cat gets used to the movement and noise, but did not deter my cat from using it..the smell is definitely less than with a regular litter box.. I love the crystals, BUT.. my cat has soft bowel movements and even the 20 minutes of sitting in the crystals does not firm them up enough to avoid sticking to and getting behind the rake.. I do agree with previous users.. that they need to come up with a plastic holding box rather than a coated cardboard box…this works great for when one is not going to be able to clean the litter box daily..
I’ve been searching for an auto litter box for a month now. I’ve compared the LM900, LME9000, and Scoopfree Ultra. Except for a few crucial mistakes, I would have kept this one:
- high monthly cost, even if one were to reuse the trays or buy a reusable one, the crystals are harder to find and are much more expensive. They should have included a reusable tray
- the poop collection area is too small and the gaps are too big, poop-jerky has a super potent odor!
- unfortunately the litter would never last 30 days even in the best conditions and with daily mixing
Things I loved:
- excellent and ingenious design of the raking system, flawless
- simplicity
- for the ultra model: the counter for monitoring of cat activity during the day
- the perfect fit of the solid hood
- the long cord
- the build quality, not fragile at all unlike every Littermaid product that exists
- the very quiet operation
I spent a lot of time reading reviews before purchasing this item, and I’m glad I did. The people that had negative experiences expected it to perform above what it is capable of. If you know what you’re getting into, this will work very well for you. If not you will be disappointed. Been using this since x-mas, here’s what I’ve learned…
- have 2 cats, the cartridge will last 2 weeks max.
- cartridges are between 15-20 bucks each, so expect that expense
- it does scoop very well, but you do need to take a look at it once in a while to make sure it’s ok
- even if it’s not full of poop once the crystals are saturated with pee they will start to stink
- you do need to do a little extra cleaning when you change the cartridge just to keep the rake and housing clean. if you let it get disgusting it’s going to break someday
- the ‘cartridges’ are just cardboard boxes with a little hatch to keep the poop in, nothing special. the crystals are what costs $.
- the crystals aren’t that great (and some do get tracked out of the box that need to be swept up), but they’re better that the mushroom cloud that was created when pouring my old ‘clumping’ litter.
So – if your expectations are in line with how the thing works, and you are willing to spend a little more for a little less work, you should be happy.
With two cats in the household, I got tired of the old litterbox system and started to do some research (thank goodness for the internet) to see what was out there. A couple of friends had LitterMaids, but weren’t completely satisfied with them.
In my searching I located Litterbox Central — a truly great resource for anyone looking to get/share info on all the different types of boxes out there. I wanted to give it a proper trial period before posting my review.
The reasons I give it 4 instead of 5 stars:
1. The disposable cartridges are expensive, often difficult to find, and they leak after less than a week. I ended up hand-building my own tray from PVC (see reference to Litterbox Central above for complete details on how to make your own or to buy one) and am now completely satisfied.
2. Reality vs. advertising — don’t expect this litterbox to be completely “hands off” as the advertizing claims. While it’s very, very good — the best way to get the most of it is to do an occasional stir of the litter and to rake out excess poops from under the lid. Operative word is “occasional” — maybe once every few days. It really helps, and is still worlds less trouble and smell than any other box I’ve found.
And the two friends with the Littermaids? They now own Scoop Free’s with PVC trays………
In summary — very, very pleased with the Scoop Free.
The litterbox combined with the fresh step crystal litter does indeed keep odors at bay. They should have stayed at the planning table longer however, because the disposable trays, even though convenient, are just not practical. They certainly do not last a month like advertised! If you have more than one cat, you are lucky to get 2 weeks tops out of the cartridges before having to replace them and that gets mighty expensive. If your cat scratches the bottom of the cardboard, it will get wet and need to be tossed even sooner because the urine will soak into the cartridge quicker.
WHy they didn’t make and offer a reusable tray is beyond me. It would make the box perfect if it had one. There is a solution though, a clever person came up with and is selling reuseable trays for this box. He is not associated with the company, he is doing this on his own. I have purchased 2 from him and they are the only way to fly with this box! (Unless of course you have money to burn, then the disposable ones are for you)
I whole heartedly recommend this box together with the ‘forever tray’, as it is called. You can find them on ebay or at a great site devoted to all litterboxes [...] You will find all the information and reviews on the many different automatic litterboxes at that site. If you are in the market for an automatic box, that site should be your first stop.
The scoopfree has worked flawlessly for me as long as I have had it. I have been on the search for the perfect litterbox for as long as I can remember, and have owned every kind made to date. The scoop free is the closest thing to perfect I have found.
Disclaimer: I am not associated in anyway with either Scoop Free or the Forever tray, simply a pleased buyer of both.
This litterbox is so much better than the 3 Littermaids I’ve purchased and gotten rid of in the past. It’s quieter, smells better, and you don’t really need to touch any messy tray. The only downfall I’ve found with this one is, the refill trays are so expensive! And as the owner of 2 cats, I’m having to purchase a new tray at least every 2 weeks @ $15.99 each. I just wish the manufacturers would cut the price a little. Other than that, completely happy!
I gave this Product 4 Stars simply because it is AUTOMATIC. I couldn’t keep it in the bedroom because it is a motor after all and is by no means whisper quiet!
It takes 20 minutes to cycle after Kitty leaves the box. That right there is my estimation on why the pee eventually sinks into the Slightly Plastic Covered CARDBOARD CARTRIDGE and needs to be replaced before or about in 30 days.
I suggest using a Piece of Plastic Carpet Protector (you can get it by the roll at Home Depot) under the entire unit “JUST IN CASE!”
You need to remove the Poo occasionally from the cartridge if you expect it to last 30 days. It is a fairly simple task and easy to get too. Just wear a GAS MASK or hold your breath. Thank God I bought the DOME LID for the thing! But PheeUweey from the front of the Litter BOX!
I question the Odor Issue because I have blended the Fresh Step Crystals with Dr Elseys Ultra Precious Cat Litter, which is supposed to be a superior Odor control. 1/4 Fresh Step and 3/4 Dr Elseys. Not having cats before or even using litter, I figured this would be a win win situation. SO… I don’t know which one is FAILING the ODOR EATER TEST here.
My 2 kittens ALSO have a spare Litter box. They only get 1/2 can “wet” food in the evening, NO FISH FOOD either… They have their Dry Food down all the time! So… something STINKS in Denmark here!
This is a great product, BUT the cartridges are way too expensive. I have read other reviews on other Automatic Litter Boxes where you can use Grocery Plastic bags as recepticals to replace the plaseic bags you buy for the OTHER AUTO Litter Boxes.
I wonder if I made a mistake here… I was shooting for quiet motor and that didn’t pan out… Now I am stuck having to pay $15.99 per cartridge and you don’t save a PENNY buying the 3 pack! The shipping is OUTRAGEOUS! They got you by the nose hairs here!
We have had many littermaids and such over the years. Never lasting more than a year. No smell and worked great until it died this week. We had incredible customer service when we called. Great warranty for this product. No accusations of poor maintenance or difficulty. When this new one goes out of warranty, we will be happy to buy another in our future.
This litter box is one of the better I have tried, but it could use improvement. The two key problems are the cartridges and the level of noise. The cartridges, even with the current changes, still leak badly. Fortunately, I was prepared for that and placed a bag underneath the unit. It is also not has quiet as advertised. It scared one of my cats, when she heard it from across the room, and now it has been a chore to get her to use it again. The smell is maintained well, but with two cats I need to buy a cartridge a week. Hopefully, the forever cartridges from the internet will reduce some of this cost. Overall it is still the best I have tried.
After doing the research and reading all of the reviews, we selected this litter box and have been very happy. It is a little louder than I anticipated, but nothing significant (unless you expect dead silence). It took almost two weeks for my cat to stop running over and staring when it would go through the cleaning cycle…I think he was just protective? I would give it a 5 were it not for the cost of the litter refills.
I have been using the Scoop Free Litter Box about six weeks now, and for the most part, I am very pleased with it. I have a four month old kitten and she took to it instantly. It is a little on the noisy side, but it performs as addvertised with one big exception: there is no way the cartridge lasts for 30 days! My kitten doesn’t even weigh three pounds yet, and I can’t get more than 18 days out of a cartridge. I don’t get any urine smell from it (sometimes I hit the button when I pass by to mix the crystals), but after two weeks the smell of feces is pretty evident. So far, I’ve only had to clean the rake once. I also purchased the hood and the carpet. The hood helps keep the crystals in the box when my kitten is scampering around in there, and the carpet does a good job of catching whatever my kitten tracks out. I did quite a bit of research before I purchased this and I was aware that many people advised that the cartridge would not last 30 days. For me, the extra expense is worth the convenience of not having to scoop the litter box twice a day. Now, I check the box every two days or so, and when it’s nearing two weeks, I know that I will need to change it soon. I did not give this five stars because of the expense of the cartridges, but everything else about the Scoop Free Litter Box is perfect. Thank you to all who gave such good advice before me, and I hpoe those of you who are researching now find this review helpful!
This litter box works great. The only problem is the cost of the litter box catridges. I have two cats and easily use 3 of them a month which is at least $45 per month which seems pretty costly. I did invest in a perma scoop permanent catridge that I refill with Mimi cat litter from Wal Mart which helps to reduce cost. I do find this messier to clean as you can not use any kind of liner so I have to spray it out and wipe dry. But the mess is worth the cost savings over buying the scoop free catridge.
I was setting up my house for a new cat that I decided to adopt from a local pet store’s weekend shelter adoption program. I was concerned that with all the changes and stresses of an adult cat getting a new home she wouldn’t like the litter box. But, there was no problem. She knew exactly what it was, that it was hers, and took to it right away. She liked watching the rake move and the sound didn’t frighten her. She’s a very shy kitty that likes to hide, too.
I do scoop the poop out after a couple weeks, and then once more after a week, and then toss it out altogether on the fourth weekend. The litter’s dehydration property works, but it doesn’t shrink it enough to not need to scoop. Since I have just one medium sized cat, the cartridges will last a whole month and not stink as long as I do the simple maintenance already mentioned.
It is easy to clean since everything is already collected into one area. You’re not sifting the entire box trying to find stuff. Then you just stir the crystals that aren’t under the trap lid and you’re good to go. There has been no urine smell or leakage. I’m on the 5th month of owning this litterbox.
Some pet stores do not carry the cartridges. If you just order them at the beginning of the month of the last cartridge, replacements will arrive on time. I wish they didn’t cost so much, but it is a convenience to not have to scoop every day.
…and I’ve tried many of them!
It is simple in design and has been working flawlessly for more than 4 months now. The replacement cartridges are expensive, but I ususally refill them once with the same type of litter before throwing them away…just make sure you use the same type of litter that comes with it or the rake may not work well (because of different sized particles).
My only complaint is that it is nearly impossible to get under the flap that hides the solid waste without taking the tray completely out so you can scoop if you want to to stretch the life of the cartridge.
With the Crystal litter the rake gets far less dirty than with scooping litter and there is much less chance of having a “clog” that stops the rake. As long as you cat is OK with Crystal type litter, give it a try!
I had the Omega PAW Self Cleaning litter box for years and really liked that I did not have to get my “hands dirty” except for the occasional scrub-down of the whole box. I’d heard that the mechanical litter boxes were loud and that picky cats did not take well to them. I moved into a small apartment with little room to accommodate a litter-box so I thought I would set this up, along with the lid “for privacy” and see if it worked.
I am extremely pleased with this litter box as it contains odor really well – I have to change it about every 17-20 days, but it doesn’t leak, ands my 4 1/2 year old cat took to both the change in litter and litter box very well! I like the fact that although it is a little smelly prior to the grates scooping the waste, that it has a timer prior to grating the waste that allows your cat to be well on to some other activity and is not startled by the noise. My cat actually runs over to the box when it starts running purely out of curiosity.
I would recommend this litterbox.
I would recommend this product. It is not as “hands off” as one might anticipate, but it is 100 times better then standard litter boxes. The replacement trays can be a bit pricy, but if you look around on the internet you can find deals at various locations when purchasing multiple replacement trays at a time. We have asked people at various times if they can tell we have a cat in the house and their answer is always – Cat? I didn’t know you had one?
I have 2 cats and I have been replacing the tray almost weekly due to leakage. (very expensive) I tried moving the granulars around, but it did not fix the problem areas.
So, instead of trashing my 3rd automatic litter box, I thought I would slide a litter box liner over the cardboard box to see if that would help.
IT DOES!!!!!!!!! I am monitoring it daily, but the liner is not ripped and I am not seeing any indication of the usual problem. If this simple addition will allow my trays to last longer I will love this product.
Works wonderful- def. a big step up than cleaning the litter box every morning. I have had the same cartridge in for about 20 days and is ready for a change already- def. would not last 30 days for my one cat.
Also the motor is loud- I am not sure what whisper quiet means to the manafac. but box will wake you up in the middle of the night in the next rooom.
Would def. recommend this product despite the noise- works great and have had no problems so far.
This litter box is so much better than my old one. If a person wouldn’t want to buy this, I’d at least recommend changing over from regular litter to crystals. It is SO much cleaner/nicer. This litter box is not odorless- I have it in a semi-confined place. But, it is much much much less smelly than the regular litter box. The only thing I hate is when it’s 3 am and I hear the thing’s mechanical moan as it sweeps itself clean. Other than that, I really have no complaints. I got the LT1-3 refills which have an extra plastic lining inside to reduce soaking through (which hasn’t happened to me yet). If it wasn’t all so expensive, I’d be happier. Regardless, I am glad that I purchased this litter box.
I love not having to clean the litter box every day. This handy gadget does it for me to the great amazement of the cat, the dog and the kids. It had the added bonus of scaring the dog so much that he wouldn’t go near the box now even if it was filled with steak. I would highly recommend it with the caveat that it does not last anywhere near 30 days. I have only one cat and I don’t think she poops excessively, but by day 12-13 the box starts to smell and by 14 days it’s quite unbearable. We change the litter cartridge at day 15. It’s still worth it to me, although twice as pricey as I thought it would be.
The box itself works great. It’s a bonus not to have to scoop a box everyday. However, if your cat is at all picky about her litter, beware of the crystals. It hurt my feet whenever I stepped on a stray bit of litter so I can only imagine what it felt like for my cat. After grudgingly using the box for a day or so, my cat started going right next to the box. So I mixed in some of her old clumping litter and that worked until the rake scopped all the clumping litter granules right to the bottom of the tray. Not to mention clumping litter was sticking to the rake, creating a mess.
So I dumped all of the litter out of the tray and replaced it with a non-clumping clay litter. It seems to be working just fine and the cat has resumed using the box again. I don’t want to give up the scoop-free lifestyle so I guess I’ll continue things as they are.
I love how this litter box works. It is much better than the mess of the scooping cat litter in the litter maid. The raking sound is a little loud, but it only takes about a minute. The advertising says to leave it alone for 30 days, but in the instructions it mentions that it helps to stir the litter manually every few days. I admit since my cat tends to go in one particular spot, I did need to stir it every few days, but even with the hood attached this was a quick and simple maintenance step. My only complaint is the high cost of the refills. I wish there was a better way to purchase these, such as buying the litter separate from the cartridges to cut down on cost. Overall, for what is available today, it is a great deal for the price.
This litter box is so great! I would have given it 5 stars, but the refills are not readily available, at least at any of the places I have looked, and are expensive to order online. But I did figure out a way to get around that. I purchased inexpensive cat pan liners that have elastic around the edge and attached it to the original tray that came with the litter box. Make sure to get large ones so that there is plenty of room and the grate won’t catch the plastic, and that the flap with the metal pieces on it can still move up and down easily. Then I found an off brand of crystal cat litter (Mimi Litter) at Wal-mart, and filled it with four pounds of that. I switched on the grate to make sure it could still work with the liner, and it seemed to work fine. Even if your cats do scratch a hole through the liner, the tray is liquid-proof, so you can just clean it up with a paper towel and some antibacterial cleaner.
After figuring out a way to cut the cost of using this product and making it easier to use, I just love it. I have two cats, and both took to it right away. It’s so easy – I just stir the litter around every few days and then change it out completely every ten days or so. I have to set a reminder so that I know how many days it’s been. With my old litter box, there was always disgusting gray litter everywhere in my basement, and it didn’t absorb the odor, which the crystal litter does. I was having to scoop every day or every other day, which I despise. Also, the purple and white box and the blue litter is just nicer to look at than gray clumps that stick to the side of the box. This is WAY better than any manual litter system I have ever used, and as long as it keeps working, I will be happy.
We’ve been satisfied with this litter box – we have 2 cats that had no problem using it right when we changed it out. The only issue I have is the expensive cartrides and that you have to go to specific stores or order online to get them.
At first I thought the self cleaning box was perfect. I still think it is a great solution for cat owners who are away from home often. There is very little odor and in general I’m very pleased. At times the cleaning mechanism doesn’t trigger properly and I have to unplug to reset. Otherwise no problems.
I owned a Litter Maid for about 7 years. It also had short comings but did a pretty good job. It finally broke down last month so I needed to replace it. I was really surprised it lasted so long. After doing some research, it seemed the newer Litter Maids had lots of problems and I was scared away from getting a new one. The Scoop Free had better reviews, so I went for it.
First, what I like.
Not scooping every day.
Not emptying the tray every week as we did with the litter maid.
Does a good job controlling odor.
Not as messy as Litter Maid. The larger litter/crystals doesn’t seem to get carried out of the box like traditional litter. Don’t get me wrong, it still gets on the floor but not as bad as regular litter.
Short comings.
1) Tray doesn’t last 30 days. At least not for my one cat. On the 21st day, the cat pee’d elsewhere. Obviously not pleased with the condition of the box. I couldn’t smell a problem and it looked fine. Upon closer inspection (getting down on the floor at the cat’s level) it did smell and the litter didn’t seem to be absorbing as well as it should. So we are going to change between 15-20 days.
2) As other reviews mentioned, stirring the litter up every couple of days is helpful. The rake does not mix up the moist litter on the bottom of the tray.
3) Small pieces of poo don’t always make it into the covered part of the tray. Sometimes they get trapped on the opposite side of the rake.
Do I like it better than the Litter Maid? Yes
Would I still buy it, knowing what I now know from personal experience? Yes
I found someone on ebay who sells a plastic tray made for the Scoop Free. Just do a search for scoop free and you will find it. It might help with the cost of disposable tray. I’m giving it some thought and may get it at a later date.
It sure beats all other kitty litter boxes and trust me I have tried them all, automatic and not. This one is the closest one the being perfect. I just wish the cartridges were more accessible and less expensive. My cats however don’t care and love their kitty box and if they are happy, so am I.
I found the Scoop-Free litter box to be the most reliable on the market. The mechanism seems to work fine without getting stuck like some other self-cleaning boxes, most likely due to the use of the crystal litter. My only complaint, which seems to be the majority of complaints on this product, is the fact that the you had to purchase the refills on-line and that you have to throw away the whole kit & kaboodle. I never could understand why they didn’t devise this system with a permanent tray instead of the cardboard box system. That way, you would only have to purchase the litter (which should be less expensive). Then…..lo and behold…..I found this site on ebay for the “Forever Litter Tray” and decided to order one…..Well, let me tell you…..it’s fantastic. This guy is a genius….The permanent box fits perfectly under the original system and now all I have to do is empty it and refill it with Fresh Step Crystals which I found at WalMart. I purchased an 8 lb. bag which can be a bit pricey too; however, I do not have to order the refill trays on-line anymore and the 8 lb. bag seems to last twice as long as what comes with the original system. So…hats off to the inventor of the “Forever Litter Tray. Try it….you’ll love it!
I hardly write reviews but I do for certain products that took me some time to research. And since actual reviews of products by people who’ve purchased them help me in my decision process I thought it only fair I write about my experience.
It was the usual squabble of who cleaned out the litterbox last which made me research self-cleaning litterboxes online. At first my search was limited to only LITTERMAID brand litterboxes. That proved to be too confusing due to the many models—the higher number model doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the newest. Then there was the “noise” factor with the Littermaid litter boxes that everyone kept mentioning, and finally the temperament of the mechanics used with various brands of litter. I think it took me a good month of research to narrow it down and we finally selected the Scoop Free box over the Littermaid brand.
My in-laws have purchased a Littermaid, and they are currently on their second one. The first one lasted 5 years before the motor died and they’ve since purchased a replacement. I showed them the Scoop Free litterbox and they wished they had puchased one instead of the Littermaid since the noise from the Littermaid is heard from their second floor bedroom (their box is downstairs near the garage).
I would highly recommend getting the carpet since its reduced the amount of sweeping and vacuuming litter. The one additional thing I did purchase that Scoop Free does NOT make is a permanent litter tray cartridge. The Scoop free comes with one cartridge. It’s basically a super-sturdy glossed cardboard in which you put the litter. Problem is, if you have several cats it probably will NOT last the 30-days it states (more like a week or two if your cat is a “light” pee-er). The permanent litter tray cartridge can be purchased online only on EBAY from the Seller “forevertrays”. On Ebay search for “Forever Litter Tray”. They cost $59.95 (+ $15.40 s/h). It’s worth every penny! The one thing I forgot to do is line the Forever Litter Tray with a plastic garbage bag. That’s my personal thing I like to do that but it’s not necessary since you can empty the tray out, wash it, and reuse.
We tested the Scoop Free litter box and the mechanics worked beautifully! The litter brand we use is the scoopable, clumping litter from Fresh Step with odor-eliminating carbon. We have only one cat, so instead of cleaning the litter box everyday, we clean it out once a week. It’s almost 3 weeks and the litter box has not had any issues.
PROS:
* You can use your own litter brand (*IF* you purchase the Forever Litter Tray from Ebay).
* Easy cleanup of waste.
* Relatively quiet motor (won’t scare you).
CONS:
* (Really only a minor thing). No removable receptacle to catch waste. Even though you save tons of $$ by purchasing the permanent litter tray, you still have to scoop the waste out. It does not have a “removable” waste receptacle to empty like the Littermaid. I put this as a negative since the waste is “pushed” to one side of the litterbox that is covered so you have to scoop it out instead of a tray you dump out. However, if you purchase/use the glossy cardboard catridges, this is do-able since the cardboard is meant to be used for 30-days and tossed out. However, the replacement cartridges are quite pricey which is why we purchased the permanent one.
Will not last a month, but is a good litter system. I had to buy a febreze true air to keep my room from smelling like a cat box, but that seemed to do the trick.
After purchasing three automatic litter boxes from another company – all of which broke down in a short time – I purchased a Scoop Free litter box. What a difference. There is virtually no odor. The motor is adequate for the job it has to do and is reasonably quiet. The cartridges are expensive but worth every penny. I am so grateful for this product and hope I have not jinxed myself by saying how great it is.
Scoopfree works great, but HAVE TO CKEAN OR IT WILL SMELL. Only have one cat. Smells if you leave it. I clean every couple of days, small place. Everything else about it works well. I suggest buying the aftermarket “Forever Tray,” on e-bay. Heard the cardboard tray (”cartridge”) underneath would leak if didn’t buy a plastic tray. Tray is also great. She used it from the first day, no problems. Thanks. –NG
I had wanted an automatic litter box for some time and chose the Scoop Free because it had the most positive reviews. The few negative reviews about cartridge leakage did worry me since my cat likes to dig to the bottom and pee directly on the tray. But I decided to find out for myself and purchased it anyway. Here is what I found:
Day One: I was worried that my cat would freak out at the motor since he is a HUGE scaredy cat. He examined the Scoop Free with apprehension, but after a little while, he stepped in and went to town. After he did his business and walked away, I pressed the little green button to activate the rake. The noise wasn’t too bad; it sounded slightly louder than an automatic can opener. It does make a `clank’ sound halfway through, which is caused by the rake switching directions.
Day 10: The unmistakable smell of cat urine was emanating from the litter box. I didn’t get the privacy hood, so I wasn’t sure if that was why I could smell it. I checked the cartridge to make sure there wasn’t any leakage and there wasn’t. Even though the cartridges are made of cardboard, there is a plastic (sticker-like) film that lines the bottom of the cartridge, so that definitely helps curb potential leakage. I changed the cartridge anyway because the smell was pretty strong. And I don’t have the best sense of smell, so if I could smell it, it must have been pretty noticeable!
I also noticed that a big chunk of poo got stuck in the rake… I took disinfecting wipes and cleaned in between to get it all out. The poo had dried between the teeth of the rake, so it was a little tricky to remove. But this took all of 5 minutes, so it wasn’t too bad.
3 Month Conclusion: I do save a lot more time with the Scoop Free in comparison to a traditional litter box, because it requires a lot less maintenance. However, I think their “leave alone for up to 30 days” claim is a complete exaggeration. You still have to stir the crystals every couple of days to redistribute and aerate the urine. This is important to do because the rake only removes solid waste; it doesn’t “even out” the urinated crystals. And you do have to clean off the occasional poo that gets stuck/smeared in the rake during the raking process.
All in all, I am satisfied with the product. I used to clean my traditional litter box twice a day, and now I just have to do some light maintenance once every couple of days, and change out the cartridge every two weeks.
I give the Scoop Free litter box 4 out of 5 stars because there is no way that cartridge keeps for 30 days…and because those cartridges do not come cheap!
I had an older model of the Littermaid which worked really well up until a little over a month ago. When it broke down, naturally I bought another Littermaid, thinking it was going to give me another four years of service. I couldn’t have been more wrong. Almost from the start, it kept clogging, stopping and it was unbearably loud!
I vowed to return it and started researching other automatic litter boxes. I read a lot of reviews on the Scoop Free and thought I would give it a try. It’s only been a little over a week and so far I’m extremely pleased.
I have an older, larger cat who urinates fairly often. She adjusted immediately; the crystals make less of a mess than regular scooping litter and there has been no smell. The machine itself is also extremely quiet, with only a “whirr” when it’s running.
I returned the Littermaid to the store where I purchased it and suggested to them that they only sell Scoop Free. I’m going to evaluate the length of time that it takes for the crystals to be used up and decide whether to purchase the replacement trays in bulk or search for the “forever tray”. I certainly do like the idea of not having to clean/empty any trays.
I didn’t give the product five stars, simply because I don’t think I’ve had it long enough to evaluate all the ins and outs. But so far, it is 10x better than the Littermaid!
This product is great. The only time you need to touch it is to stir around the crystals every three or four days. It isn’t as odorless as I would like but smells no where near as bad as normal kitty litter.
I purchased this box around 2 weeks ago, and I was complaining about the price of the refill boxes. They are unreasonably EXPENSIVE, especially when I have 4 cats.
However, I have experimented a little bit and found a way to save money.
That is I put 2-3 layers of GLAD “Press and Seal” before putting the refill box in for the first time. Also, please make sure the direction of the layers are perpendicular to the metal rake so when the rake is in motion, it doesn’t lift up the layers.
After covering the inside of the box with layers, I also use clear tape (preferrable mail tape) to seal where the layers touch to ensure no leakage to the bottom.
Then as a last step, I put the crystal litter in.
After doing so, I gladly discovered that I could reuse the box everytime after I change the box. However, there was one big problem ,and that was the odor from the litter box.
Thus, I went to Wal-Mart and bought a bag of Arm & Hammer High Performance Clumping Cat Litter. I used half a bag of the crystals that comes with the box, and I put in about 3-4 cups of the clumping litter.
Guess what? The odor is gone, and the air in the litter area is no longer stinky.
I know it sounds like a lot of work, but I think it’s the best litter box I’ve ever invested. Just think about it this way. Now you scoop up the wastes once a week or longer (depending on your cats), and you do not need to go through the hassel to return your broken boxes; It worths every penny!!
I only give it 4 stars because I have to buy the clumping litter seperately, however, it saves me A LOT OF money this way than keeping purchasing ScoopFree’s refill boxes.
I have personally write scoopfree a email letting them know the problems of this box and how expensive the refills are, and they basically told me the boxes are expensive because they use the best material they could find. I also encourage them to come out with a plastic box people could buy, and the respose was they want to keep this box “scoop free.”
Therefore, they have rejected everything because they want to make super profits on the refill boxes. I really hope one day, some company could come up with a plastic box so owners of this box could just buy thier own crystals while reusing this box.
My last point to those who complained about the leakage, the company responded that there is an improved box on the market. The refill box I got has a plastic layer in the ceneter instead of wax only, so make sure you get this kind so it does not leak.
Best of luck to everyone and I’ll share new discoveries with everyone when I find tips that will benefit all scoopfree box owners!
Years ago I had the Litter Maid and loved it. I had no problems. When my cat passed on I got rid of it thinking about embedded odor. I knew I could get a new one. That time has arrived. I read so many articles bad mouthing the LitterMaid. It appears the newer versions are very weakly made. So I ordered the Scoop Free. My cat is a high strung Siamese. Snap your fingers and the cat goes Boing. Soon as I got the Scoop Free out of the box and set up, the cat went in and did her thing. I thought that was a great thing. Well once the cat saw the operation she freaked. She was very cautious around it. I had the other box close by. She started using the old box. Well a few minutes ago I hear the cat in the Scoop Free, good sign. Well I was hoping she would not see the action for a few days but she did. She did not freak but really watched it. I think after a few days all will be well. The box (cartridge)can be sturdily reproduced by any handyman . Those cartridges are not readily available. Buying them may not be terrible if you buy in bulk. Each box comes with 4.5 lbs of silica gel pellets. Those alone are about $6 in the store.
Only have used for about a month now,but seams to be doing a great job taking care of keeping the work down on changing the litter box. Our cat gets a real pleasure watching the box do its thing to remove her dropings. After she uses it, she will wait by the box just to watch it work and will go over to check it out as it runs. Great entertainment!!! I wish the container was a bit bigger.
The box works great every time, it is however VERY loud! Which I can look over, because it works every time. I have two cats, so I change the litter every two-three weeks. Absolutely no maintenance needed in between changes, which I love!
It really works perfectly. I’ve had it a month and a half, and haven’t even had to replace the cartridge. I change the crystals every 8-10 days, and every few days empty the trap and mix up the crystals to absorb anything stuck to the bottom. I have two cats, and this has really saved me a LOT of time and energy that i was spending keeping two litter boxes clean. The only issue is the noise and time it takes to run. It can be a bit loud and one of my cats is terrified of it. He’ll pee in it, but won’t stay in it long enough to poo. I think if the sweep was quicker and a bit quieter, he’d adjust more easily.
This product is great for me however, not exactly as the reviews I read indicated. NOT having to scoop the litter every day is wonderful!!! I can’t say that enough. But beware that it does make enough noise to wake you up if you are a light sleeper. I am fortunate that I can fall back asleep so not a problem for me. I have 2 cats and the estimated change time is 15 days per the instructions. I am on a schedule of 10 days and may possibly change to 8… one of my cats is extremely large … need i say more. Overall, I am very pleased with this product and would recommend it if you do not mind spending the money for cartridges.
I have had Littermaid & Purforma and with all the problems of clogged rakes, burned out motors, plastic parts breaking in less than 2 weeks use, I was ready to go back to a plain litterbox. I started using crystal litter and then found the Scoopfree Litterbox. I have been using it for about a month now with no problems and the rake evens out the “piles” made from the digging & covering. I have a large male who has no problem using it, in fact there is actually more room than the others. With 2 cats, the cartridge lasts about 10 days and so far, that is the only problem with this litterbox. It is always dry & fresh and is certainly making my life a lot easier.
After reading product reviews on other automatic litter boxes, I decided to try Scoop-free. I got it mainly because I would be leaving my 4 month old kitten alone in the house for 4 days. It worked very well and I got about 20 days out of the litter cartridge. The only drawback is that although the product claims to be smell free, there are odors after a few days. The scoop-free combs the waste into a small compartment, but the odor seeps out while the wastes are dehydrating. All in all we are very pleased with the product, especially for when we go away.
After 16+ years of cleaning out kitty litter, I finally broke down and bought the Scoop Free automatic cleaner. I’d read several reviews on different kinds of automatic cleaners and decided on this one. From Day 1 I loved it! It was easy to put together, plug in and voile!! However, contrary to the 20-30 day tray replacement “promise”, I barely get to two weeks (14 days) before the wash room starts smelling like urine (at 9 days). I keep the door closed for the most part and am pushing the replacement trying to get to 20 days– right now I’m on day 15 and I think I’m going to replace it tomorrow. Can’t deal with the urine smell. After she poops, the smell lingers for a few hours before it disappears. However, at this point, I am so fed up with cleaning her litter box, and her advanced age, that I figure I’ll pay the extra for the convenience. Although at about $17/tray, this is quite a luxury! I cannot imagine having two cats with this.
I love this product. My cats took to it right away. All I had to do was leave the nasty dirty box around for a few days. It took no time for my two cats to choose the clean, fresh box. I will say I was a little concerned when I saw one of my cats staring into the box while it was raking a mess away, but it has not deterred him. I love the easy clean up, and the cost of the cartridges is little more than what I spent before on bulk litter. A few more dollars a month for a fresh, non-smelly, easy to manage litter box is well worth it!!
I just got the scoop free litter box for my two 6mo old kittens about 2 weeks ago. The design is very simple and efficient .There are a few issues that I would like to address. Since I have 2 cats ,if one goes and sets the 20 minute timer then the other one goes, it will back rake the poo to the other side. You have to watch this. I always empty the hopper into the old standby sealed trashcan to control oder. My cats have very stinky poo. I only smell it if I go in after they have gone. I have left them for 3 days already with no problems. The two are totally fascinated by the raking motion. Every time it goes off they have to run over and watch. Quality cat entertainment. I think younger cats do better with this. An older cat might not.
I did ditch the idea of replacement cartridges and bought the Permascoop.com tray. I should save money that way. The Scoop free crystals seem to work the best. You want to make sure that what ever crystal litter you buy its small enough to go through the grate
Remember no litterbox is perfectly maintenance free. You I will need to clean the tray out every time you change the litter.
Over all a great product.
This product is a BIG improvement over the Litter Maid self-cleaning litter box that we’ve had for the past four years. It is MUCH more quiet which we appreciate because we have the litter box in our bedroom and the other one would sometimes wake us up at night when it did a cleaning cycle. I’m also happy that I don’t have to empty the waste receptacle on a weekly basis as I did with the Litter Maid box. However, I have noticed that we can’t quite make it to 30 days without replacing the crystals cartridge. Perhaps it is because we have an older cat (which is what the Scoop Free literature mentions as a reason) but we only seem to go about 10-14 days before we have to replace the cartridge. This is still a big improvement over our old litter box and the fact that it is so quiet during the cleaning cycle makes it all worth it. I definitely recommend this product!
This box is wonderful! My two kitties really know how to stink up a box and this one can handle them. I do have to change it more often, but changing it is so easy! The kitties do like to watch the rake, which causes a problem because they put their weight on the part that lifts up, which makes the rake stop mid cycle. I have to be sure to hit the manual button to get it back to where it’s ready to start again. The only other problem I have is that it sometimes doesn’t automatically sweep after a use. When this happens, the light is flashing quickly which the manual says can mean that the rake is blocked or something, but sometimes it does this right after I’ve totally replaced everything, and it works fine on manual, so I don’t know. But even then, pushing a button is very easy.
I was look for a new way to deal with the whole kitty litter thing, this is perfect for my needs. I really don’t have to do much at all, I’ve had it close to a month and haven’t had any problems. My kitty however is still quite unsure about this whole thing, shes not burying her, well you know. And every time is scoops it she stalks it for a good 20 minutes, but she has not once not gone in there since I’ve gotten it so I think she just has to get used to it. The only thing that has stopped me from giving it 5 stars is that the tray does not seem to last as long as it says. like I’ve said, its been close to a month, 3 weeks and I can tell it really needs to be changed. I still don’t find that to be that bad, just a slight upset, and I still think it is a wonderful product and would recommend it anyone.
Our other cat is afraid of it.
I also think that the premise of 30 days is highly overstated. More like 2 weeks.
While the price of the litter box itself is certainly comprable to other automatic litter systems, the refill trays are way too expensive. I mean, ITS A BOX WITH SOME MAGENTS ON IT! But that being said, it works like a charm. No odor, no poo to look at, I love it. One other slight issue; the manufacturers claim with 2 cats you can get away with changing the litter tray every 15 days. No Way! I have 2 cats and 10 days is the upper limit.
When my ScoopFree arrived in the mail I couldn’t have been more excited. No more fighting over whose turn it is to scoop the litter box. I set it up and plugged it in and … nothing happened. After a couple of tries it came to life, and worked wonderfully at what it’s supposed to do, but every day it would turn itself off and I had to unplug it, let it rest, then plug it back in. After about a week of that and trying different outlets, etc., I emailed ScoopFree customer service and they were very expedient in shipping me a new box.
Since I started fresh with the new one, I have had no problems. The three cats took to it right away, even though they all have different personalities (one very shy, one older and possibly set in his habits, and one kitten who couldn’t care less where she does her business). Yes, I know ScoopFree recommends 2 boxes if you have 3 cats, but our cats don’t have a problem with it so why should I? The cartridge lasts me 7-8 days. I put a little baking soda on the bottom before I pour in the litter in the fresh cartridge and that helps with the odor, not that there is much anyway, compared with our old Stinky McStinkerson regular litter box. I also stir the crystals every 1-2 days like ScoopFree suggests, and I can see how that makes a difference in distributing the “crystal power” around better.
Bottom line, even though it cost $100 to start and about $16/week to maintain, to me it’s worth not cringing over the clumps, scoop and bag in hand, every night. I would buy the permanent bottom on Ebay to cut my costs as other reviewers have suggested, but I can’t find the Fresh Step crystal litter anywhere in my area (Hollywood, FL) to fill it with. Oh well!
This product works pretty much like it says it will. The product itself works pretty good for me, but the litter cartridges haven’t been lasting as long as expected. I only have 1 cat, but it seems like I need to change the cartridge every 2 weeks or so.
This product does everything it says it does. I’ve been really pleased with it, and knowing what I know now, would have paid double the price. The only drawback is that after 2+ weeks, one of my cats (I have two) appears to be afraid of it and hasn’t yet used the box. Great product!
This is a great litter box – no smell or dust from clay litter. The refill cartridges are expensive and I find I have to change mine more frequently with two cats. Once the retrival box is filled it gets pretty stinky but I scoop out the waste, add a cup or two of crystals (to the litter tray) that I purchased at the grocery store, and it’s good to go for another week. That is saving me alot of money versus purchasing refill cartridges every week. There’s a lot less mess in general with this box and I highly recommend it to anyone with cats!
I am very pleased with the Scoopfree litter box system, and my two cats adjusted fairly quickly. I added Scoopfree crystals to their regular litter for a couple of weeks, and then moved to a new house, put out the Scoopfree automatic box, and they have been using it with no problems. I do find it necessary to redistribute and mix up the crystals every few days, but that may be only because my cats like to pile it all into one corner of the box. I will probably buy the hood now, since they do scatter the litter about, and it is a lot sharper to step on than the ground clay litter.
Most importantly, I find not having to deal with the box so frequently a real plus, and well worth the price of the sytem and supplies. The mechanism is noisier than I expected based on other comments, but one gets used to it.
This is soooooo much better than hand scooping a litterbox every day that I don’t regret the purchase at all. It works great, our kitten went right to it and with the optional hood on odor has been greatly reduced. There’s going to be some smell in the 20 minute window between when the cat uses the box and when the rake runs. But if you’re around and in a hurry, you can push the button to make it work faster.
30 days between changes is dreaming. We have one 6 month old kitten … maybe a kitten produces more waste because they’re growing so fast? I don’t know, but I have to clean out the #2 holder about once a week and need to change the whole cartridge about every 2 weeks.
But hey …. once every couple of weeks is GREAT compared to a standard litter box so I’m not complaining. The only reason I give this 4 stars intead of 5 is that they get your hopes up with the 30 day advertising and I can’t imagine what cat poops so little that 30 days worth would fit in that little compartment.
It is a great product though that has made life MUCH easier so overall I recommend it highly.
When I got my first indoor-only cat, I knew I’d probably need to get an automated litter box due to my anticipated forgetfulness about scooping. I read all the reviews and this one was pretty universally recommended compared to the others available on the market. I’ve been using it for about 10 months since I first adopted a former stray through the shelter. He took to it right away without any problems. Whenever it goes through its cleaning cycle, he tries to attack the metal sweeper, but it has stood up well to his abuse. I have to change out the cartridges approximately every 3 weeks. I’ve been very happy with it. It does a good job with odor and is pretty quiet too.
With all of the praise I have for the box, it’s a little disappointing that the price of the replacement cartridges has continued to rise. It doesn’t seem that they should be as expensive as they are, and shouldn’t prices go down over time as production increases?
This litter box works great! The replacement litter cartridges are expensive. We have two cats and have to replace cartridges every 10 to 14 days. The cleanup is easy. If you can afford it… get it!
Maybe there isn’t a completely satisfactory method of disposing of cat waste. Even though this box does scoop, there is always something that is missed. Maybe it is just my cats. Also, the cartridges only last one week with two kittens.
I wanted to wait to give my review to make sure my cats liked it. It took some changing around in the house as to where it was going to get used. If the old kitties could they would use the old boxes the younger kitties adapted quicker. We have 6 cats now and the clay litter would get stinky fast. After about 3 moves I think I have figured out the good places for these boxes. I bought two and I have two old boxes, they are beginning to use the Scoop Free much more than in the beginning, they seem to use it more for urinating than pooing, but that’s okay because sometimes the rake does get stuck with poo, but most of the time its fine. I’m pleased with this product and I did purchase it with the addition of two kitties and its helping with all the cats we have.
Works well for my two cats! Very low maintenance but you will want to change it more often than 30 days. The cartridges are expensive but are worth it. I often add extra crystals.
Yes, the cartridges are expensive, but completely worth it. This never gets jammed like the Litter Maid. With one cat, cartridges last about 3.5 weeks. I’ll never go back to regular litter!
