Cat Genie – The world’s only self flushing, self washing, cat box.
Washable Granules, not litter. Collecting cat waste in a box of litter is unsanitary. Cleaning the mess out is unpleasant.
To satisfy a cat’s need to dig and cover, CatGenie uses comfy, permanent Washable Granules instead of disposable litter. To cats, it’s just like using a clean litter box.

I got this about a week ago. I really liked it. However, my cats were afraid to poo in it. This morning one finally did. I kept hearing her try and cover it up, but she couldn’t because well…she must have held it in or something. It was huge. I immediately turned on the Genie and guess what? It missed 1 of the 3 turds in there. I figured it would capture everything eventually, so I went back to bed. Soon I smelled something strange and unlike anything I’ve ever smelled in my life. It was the poo mixed with the Sani Solution. I don’t have a weak gag reflex, but I almost threw up. I had to turn off the heat and open up all my windows for this place to air out. I really hate cleaning the litterbox, but OMG I wasn’t expecting that stench.
If you get one of these things, seriously put it somewhere out of the way of regular foot traffic. I have to keep mine in the hallway of my apartment because it’s closest to the cold water hose in the washing machine, which is in my bathroom next to the hallway.
I will never be able to get that smell out of my memory now…
I have a real love/hate relationship with my catgenie. I installed it beginning of December 2007 – very easy to install in our bathroom- had to go to the speciality plumbing store to get the right fixture but that was easy enough. Our two cats adjusted to it very quickly. We run it manually about two or three times a day. The granules themselves do nothing to mask the smell of cat poop but that’s ok- we just “flush” after every use.
The Catgenie is absolutely a dream as advertised when it’s working. We never have to touch cat litter, just press the button and flush the toilet. It is quiet enough although not as quiet as the new front loader washing machine we just got, but that’s another story. Be sure to get the high walls and dome if you have a cat that likes to dig and scratch the litter to cover up every little bit. We had very little granule tracking after we got the high walls.
HOWEVER, it seems that about every week and half, the catgenie either stops pumping the water out properly, leaving wet litter or the hot air blowing on water. beep beep beep Which means we have first figure out there’s something wrong before the cats have to use the litter box again, then we have to take the whole thing apart and clean out the impeller and the hose and manually empty the standing water because the pump doesn’t get the water out for some reason.
Customer Service is exceptional, staying open quite late BUT I rather not have to deal with unexpected standing water in the only cat box in the house, which means we MUST get the CatGenie fixed or get a cat litter box for emergencies which totally defeats the purpose. I guess if I got in the habit of cleaning the whole thing once a week instead of twice a year like it suggests in the manual, we might not have this issue.
When I bought it, I got 5 sanicartridges. We just installed the 4th one today Feb 25, 2008, so it appears that we’re averaging just over one sanicartridge a month.
My feedback is that it’s ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL when it’s working. The cats love it because they have a cleaner litter box than they ever have experienced. Maybe as more people use it and it gets more refined or sturdier or something, it’ll require less maintenance. I want it to be as maintenance free as my toilet, that’s all.
I’m not sure yet if I love this product or hate it. I love being able to just push a button twice a day and not have to deal with a litter box. My cats (2) took to it with no problem so that’s not an issue. My problems with the product are the smell, the efficiency of removing solid waste, and the mess of the granules. The smell is a very strong medicinal odor at best. At worst it’s a strong smell of baked poo. The second time I ran the machine some solid waste missed the scooper, then got washed and air dried. The smell permeated throughout my house before I realized what was going on.
The other issue is that the granules are small pieces of plastic. I think it’s because of the weight, but the cats track the granules everywhere. I actually found one yesterday on my dining room table. Have to admit that was unpleasant.
I have 2 cats and have owned a catgenie for almost 6 months. I love this litter box most of the time, but there has been a few problems. There were ‘clogging’ issues, resulting in failure to drain water and requiring my husband and myself to dismantle the unit while full of stinky water in order to de-clog. After 2 more clogging episodes, the cleaning cycle went completely out of sync. An e-mail to “catgenie” tech support went unanswered. When I called, the person I spoke with was helpful, instructed me on how to fix the situation, and sent a newly designed replacement part which is supposed to reduce clogging. Clogging has been reduced, but not eliminated (cat hair clogs up the outflow). As a fellow reviewer stated, I would be uncomfortable leaving the catgenie unattended over long periods of time, in case it clogs and fails to drain. We have the box set up in our laundry room, which was not too hard except the drain hose of the litter box and the washing machine would not fit into the drain pipe at the same time, requiring us to rig up an attachment to allow both to drain through the same pipe. All in all, it is great not having to scoop, but things get pretty gross if it stops working. Because of the investment, I am sticking with it, but my husband is ready to give the cats old fashioned litter again.
First, I must admit I am hooked on this unit, despite all of the many problems it has – try it, being forewarned of all the problems below, and decide for yourself.
It is a true, self-cleaning box, unlike every other box on the market. … for me, the ability to go on short vacations without worrying about or asking someone, to change litter, is a godsend.
They spend a lot of documentation on cat acclimation. For me, it was no problem. These two things were enough for me to live with the problems below:
In concept, this product gets 5 stars … dropped to 3.5 (or 3 as listed) for the following reasons:
1) The marketing promise that you will never have to clean litter again is far from the truth. In the fine print in the manual, they state you only have to do a thorough clean every 6 months – not so. It’s worse than that.
Those negative reviews about “baking poo” have hit the time when the unit needs a full clean – which is more like every 2 months, max. The problem with this unit is that no detergent – that wouldn’t kill cats and plastic – can remove a slow build-up of waste/film inside the unit. Also, the unit moves water far too slowly (other than the hopper) to force clean it, and has no brush/friction underneath. Once a layer of film forms … it grows, and grows … and smells. Get out the gloves every couple months, and – at least for 2 cats – set the clean frequency to the max (4x a day) … and you will be fine.
You better not hate nasty cleaning, to buy this unit … you will do it a few times a year.
2) The marketing promise you will save money is far from the truth. For two cats, given you really need max cleaning frequency, you will be running through detergent AND granules at 2-4x the rate. Include water use and electricity … litter is cheaper.
3) The marketing claim it is environmentally friendly is complete hogwash. The detergent boxes are not recyclable unless you hammer/smash/disassemble them – even then, in most cases they are not, since the plastic grade is not marked. All that water, electricity, wasted plastic (and microchips!) in the trash vs. simple clay litter in the trash. At best, it’s a toss up what’s better.
4) The unit – as evidenced in 1) – has some serious design flaws. Others other than 1) include:
a) the GenieEyes are very poorly designed. My theory is that they cannot handle large temperature fluctuations (e.g. genie is near a window, or perhaps in the garage) … in any case, what happens is that they misfire a lot, which keeps the unit from starting on time … sometimes for hours, sometimes (bad unit) : never [see comments for more info + rebuttal].
b) the hopper impeller (perhaps for safety) has no real blades (more like fins). As such, it cannot shred hair or … thanks to one of my cats … plastic. These things will immediately break the funneling action of the impeller – they don’t even need to clog it, just break the funnel action… and the unit will not drain. In short – your cat better have a “normal” diet.
c) the error monitoring on this unit – compared against devices of the year 2008 – is as dumb as a turnip. I have given up trying to spot-fix the unit when (good news: rarely) it has an error. Instead – I completely disassemble and clean the entire unit at this time, which guarantees it works again (e.g. light pipe is clean, hopper is free of plastic, etc.)
d) They placed the buttons that control the unit right on top of the unit – a nice flat surface that any cat (certainly mine) just can’t wait to jump on. A well placed paw and … chaos ensues. Fortunately they have a “child lock” – who are they kidding? It’s really a “cat lock” function – but it is a real pain to unlock/lock every time you wish to change/start/manage the controls. I can think of many ways that could have been done better.
e) Cartridge microchip “counter” contacts – or some connection between the machine and the cartridge – is sometimes flaky. This is especially true when the units vibrates itself while cleaning. The result: the unit reports a cartridge error (most likely a cartridge empty error) after cleaning, when in fact there was no real error. Reseating the cartridge usually fixes it, sometimes not – in this case, a full power cycle is required. CatGenie is aware of this issue, and recommends placing a piece of paper or equiv. inbetween the cartridge and the unit to keep in in place. This has never worked for me, personally – I usually end up carefully placing the cartridge, and hope the cats don’t land another well placed paw while jumping on the unit.
[edited to in fact upgrade stars, in part due to CatGenie themselves responding to this review (how many companies ever respond ... to anything?), albeit my strong objection to the content of their response]
Day 1: IT”S HERE! *jumping up and down* Now how do I put it together?
Day 2: My wonderful friend Paul is coming over to hook it up! He is an electrician and a plumber-I’m IN!! *jumping up and down* He is SUCH a good friend!!!
Day 3: Aaaahhh, bliss…..I love the CatGenie. It is so cool to turn it on, and watch all the scooping and rinsing, and blowdrying…..aaahhh…I hope the cats get in it soon. I ran it a couple of time “just in case” they had peed in it, ’cause I couldn’t tell …
Day 4: I am so excited! There is a big cat poop in the Catgenie! Oh boy! I get to watch it REALLY work!! Ok, here comes the big flat Genie hand, it is gonna scoop the poo as the bowl is merrily whirling around..yes…uuuhhh..It just SMASHED the poo because the hand and the bowl were not in sync….ick. Now the Genie hand is coming up to deposit the “treasure” but as it goes up the little row of teeth, shaking the loose litter out, the pieces of poo fall off too… I can’t look. I am going back in the kitchen to find a glass of wine. Wine, yes, that will make me feel better… yes.
Day 5: My new kitten has made another deposit. Did rats get in here too? What are those little brown pellets? Ohhhh.. I see…. leftover nuggets from yesterday. Well, the next wash will take care of them, I am sure. Here comes Chai… he sniffs the bowl carefully…jumps in…yowls in annoyance..pisses like a racehorse on a flat rock, then SPRINGS out of the box, scattering the “litter” everywhere. I am not impressed. But, I turn it on, and walk away, and all is well until…what’s that beeping noise?? Three beeps. What do three beeps mean? Luckily, I find the card that says “Don’t freak at the beep”..so I call Tech support. Wine. I need to get a glass real quick….yes.. that will help. Tech support: “What’s the serial number on your processing unit?” I swallow another sip of wine, and say ok, it’s 666…..etc. Then I laugh, and say “AHA” THAT explains it!!!! The unit is POSESSED”! The crickets chirp….swallowing another mouthful, I say carefully “hello”?? They instruct me that I now have to take the unit apart. These bastids have NO sense of humor… OOkaaaaayyy…… I manage that. Lo and behold there is a baby sock in the impellor. Damn cats and their sense of revengeful humor for forcing them into a clean fresh box every time! CatGenie simply yawns, and goes back to it’s regular mode. I finish the bottle of wine.
Day 5: All is well!
Day 6: I LOVE this thing!!!!
Day 7: Why is the bowl full of water??? Why is there cat crap in my dining room? Grabbing my ever-resourceful bottle of Pinot Grigio, I head back to the CatGenie and wash it’s butt like it has never been washed. I find no plug, no clog, all parts appear to be working. There is NOTHING wrong. Error beeps contine. Chewing on the cork of the wine bottle in mad frustration, I unplug the unit, and go to Lowe’s and buy a Cat door. The cats are now going outside in the courtyard to do their “thing” and I am happy. (I live on a big horse farm waaaay away from any road)
Fast forward to day 190: It is getting cold. The cats do not want to go outside to do their “thing” anymore. They are more than happy to make their “deposits” on the Dining room floor. Again. Aaargh.
Day 191: I hook up the CatGenie, and I hold my breath…it “seems” to be working. It runs through a cycle, finishes, then the 3 beeps begin again.
Tearing open my newly purchased case of wine, I uncork a bottle, put a dispenser top on the darn thing, and head to the laundry room with the phone in my ear, ready to rumble. Operator: “What’s your serial number, please?” Gritting my teeth (firmly oveer the dispensor tip of the wine) I mutter “666…..” and THEN the WITCH has the NERVE to say: “OH! Well that explains it!!!” The unit must be possesed’!
Day 196: The new processing unit has just arrived…. I will have Paul install it for me. Oh yes, they sent me a new impellor as well… seems the old one was not up to par……they can do whatever they like…..
Wine…. beautiful wine…… I am dozing off….
I’m sure this product works great. Now if only my cat would use it. If I were granted one five-minute period where I could fluently communicate with my cat, I would use all of that time to explain to him why he should use this product. But alas, I cannot speak cat. He is set in his ways. Apparently this thing isn’t even good enough for my cat to poop on.
I’m sure most people will find that this cat box really isn’t all that necessary and that scooping cat litter really isn’t all that bad. Especially when you go through cleaning granules off the floor almost daily. I bought the litter box because I CAN’T clean a litter box right now and am living alone. I’m pregnant. They tell pregnant women not to clean litter boxes.
Unfortunately I have had to clean this one, BUT, it was my fault. No one tells you that the litter box MUST be run several times a day to be effective. You would think running it once would be fine, but this is not the case, especially if you have more than one cat. Many times, if there is more than one poop in the box it will clog when cleaning. The water WILL NOT drain if it is clogged. Then when you run it again it will feed itself granules unless you remove the scoop for the first half of the cycle. Make sure to put the scoop back on before it changes to the drying cycle! Usually running it a second time using the method i described does the trick for unclogging it. If not, you have to take it apart and unclog it yourself. And trust me, this is UNPLEASANT. I had to do it once to remove granules that were fed into it. A very nice customer service rep walked me through the process. He did say one thing though, MAKE SURE IT DOES NOT FEED ITSELF GRANULES. And that would be good advice to follow!
Now that I have it set to run 3 times a day (for 2 cats) it does not clog. I think 3 times a day is a minimum for 2 cats. You will need set it for 4 times a day if you have more than 2 though, and possibly run it manually a few extra times too. That or buy an extra cat genie. The bad part about running it so often is you run out of the solution FAST, so stock up!
I have had my CatGenie a little over three months. I have 4 cats and only 1 will use it. I think it’s because the others don’t like the cramped space inside the bowl. The first couple of weeks went pretty well as far as cleaning goes. The plastic pebbles that get all over the carpet are annoying and I suck them up daily with a hand-held vacuum. Can’t imagine anyone keeping theirs in the bathroom and stepping on plastic beads everyday. I, too have had error problems. Clogging was the worst encounter for me. Not a pleasant job when the unit won’t drain and you have to unclog it. The instructions that are supplied to unclog a drain hose are a joke. If you don’t run a cycle pretty close to the time your cat leaves solids behind then you can count on unclogging the drain hose. Along with vacuuming up plastic beads everyday I also scoop out solids and then run the cycle. I don’t trust the machine’s ability enough to setup timed cycles. Other than those issues it’s a pretty nifty gadget.
This is a terrific product, and customer support is fantastic. It works as it claims it will.
All those things said, I have to be honest and tell you one of my cats won’t use it at all. He goes on the floor beside it.
The other cat, small though she is, stand in it and urinates out the door or over the sides. I’ve even purchased the optional dome, and she still goes out the door.
The walls are too short and the doorway is too “widely open.” I purchased four more sets of walls and stacked them tightly and strapped them together. It raised the sides, but she’s still going out the doorway. I’m going to order 1, maybe 2, more side sets and hope that takes care of the problem. She climbs onto the sides as she’s getting into the box anyway, so I doubt the sides will be too high.
Now if these design problems were fixed, it would be the best thing ever invented for a litter box! Catgenie just needs to work on the design, so it better suits all cats and not just the “perfect ones” who don’t have opinions. I don’t know about you, but I’ve had 5 cats (only two currently); and they’ve ALL had very strong opinions and no problem getting that opinion known.
I received the Cat Genie. It had some operational issues, but the company is very easy to talk to and we were able to get it up and running. The problem is it’s been a month and the cats won’t use it. I have worked with the company to use all the tricks to make the cats use it, and they won’t. Maybe you can’t teach old cats new tricks! If they would this machine is slick and you truly would never have to scoop cat litter again! But it is too expensive to have just sitting there unused by the cats. I may have been able to get the cats to use it if I had had more time. If you buy directly from Cat Genie, it will cost you more, but you have a full 90 days to work with. So keep that in mind when deciding where to buy it!
I bought the cat genie in June and I have now returned it within the 90 day period. I did receive a full refund from petnovations. I will try to make this review short and sweet.
*The Cat Genie really does work like it says.
*The Customer support is great.
*They follow through on the 90 day promise.
*It was easy to install.
Those are the positives. Here are the negatives:
*Small bits of poo fall between the hopper and get baked in the drying cycle.
*It is not more sanitary.
*the litter gets everywhere (more than traditional litter).
*It doesn’t save money on litter because you have to buy sani solution and pay to flush your toilet up to 4 times a day or however many times you run it.
* Do yourself a favor, go to your bathroom if that is where you plan to have it and look and see if you have an outlet on the wall by the floor. Wait you don’t? Join the club! you have to drape the heavy ugly black cord across the bathroom sink and plug it in. What an eye sore.
* The thing is huge! but the space for the cat to go won’t hold more than a day’s worth of poo so don’t plan on leaving or you will have to get someone to come over and check on the cat genie instead of the cat.
* It is kinda noisy
* The biggest problem of all: THE LITTER is non absorbent. Why do cats cover their pee and poo? So that animals won’t smell it. Well if the litter isn’t absorbant then the pee smell says there until it is ran.
This brings me to the reason I got rid of it. My cat would poop in it reliably but she would only pee in it 2 times a day and then she would go in the sink or the bathtub. If she tried to cover her poop with the litter she would get old urine on her paw and then track it across the house. Hardly more sanitary! My suggestion: get a non clumping, non absorbent, unscented litter. See if they will use that reliably. If they won’t then you won’t be able to use the cat genie. I had no problems with the operation of the cat genie just with the litter. I didn’t have problems with the impeller as some other reviewers have mentioned.
Got mine 9/07. All was fine for 3 months but then the processing unit began to malfunction. Since then I replaced the processing unit 4 times (all under warranty). When it malfunctions it stops working & beeps continuously until you unplug it. Not good if you’re away! This noise eventually scared one of my cats so she refuses to use it. To test her, I opened an old box of Feline Pine clumping litter and she walked right into the pine and used it.
I wanted to be environmentally responsible (and I admit, not have to deal with litter), but now I realize that all the plastic it takes to make the cartridges and recycle them (it doesn’t have a recycle code on it but customer service says they are recyclable) and all the water used to wash the box isn’t that earth-friendly. I also wonder about the chemicals going into the water supply.
The Pros: When it works it works really well. No smell and no worry.
The Cons: If it malfunctions it stops and beeps constantly. Imagine what happens if you’re out of town and no one’s checking up on the box? If hair clogs the exit pipe you get a large bowl full of blended poop water. The cleanup was one of the most disgusting things I’ve ever had to do. Too many granules getting into the machine (even if you don’t overfill it they get in there) causes loud grinding noises. If grass, hair or something the cat ate clogs the hopper it stops and you have to open all of it up and clean it. Again, it’s poop water you’re dealing with.
Bottom Line: If Cat Genie makes a better version in a few years that uses refillable cartridges, less water and electricity and no constant beeps I would seriously consider buying another. And as nice as customer service is, it doesn’t help if it malfunctions in the middle of the night or if there is a power outage. What is surprising is that the user’s manual doesn’t tell you how to reset the processing unit. You have to call customer service and they tell you what buttons to push, etc. And they aren’t available 24 hours. I was even told that this info was “proprietary information” ??!
I’m buying another Litter-Robot for now.
There are a handful of automatic litterboxes on the market now, and they all collect the stool and seal it (more or less) into a container so you can conveniently dump it out once a week. If you’ve dealt with any of those though, you’ll know that they work so-so, and that you won’t get rid of the smell of the box and/or the trash can. All you can do is get used to it, and hope that your friends will, too.
This machine is very different. The stool goes out into the sewage system, like it should, and the litter itself (and the rake, and the bowl!) is thoroughly washed when the cycle runs. These two feats make all the difference. It is as if you scrubbed clean your litterbox and replaced the contents every day! Actually, it’s even better than that, because the plastic pellets used have no scent themselves, so your cat will never come up to you smelling of damp clay litter.
The execution of this machine is above average. It’s modular and it easily comes apart for cleaning. Unfortunately, mine came with a warped bowl which would stop spinning every now and then when I first ran it. However, all I did to resolve that was to manually help it spin during its first cycle. I read in a forum that the heat of the built-in blowdryer during the cleaning cycle would help unwarp the bowl, and it did. It is true that the “shake the rake” mechanism spills a few pellets onto the ground, but I find this minimal – and again, they are just plastic pellets, not clay which discolor your socks/carpet, etc.
The machine uses sanitizer cartridges which supposedly last for 60 washes. I’m a bit on the fence on this – it’s clearly a money- making scheme, it even has a tamper-proofing chip in it for the “protection of your cats”. The price is just so that you will let it go, although that won’t help the landfills. N.B. I haven’t found any instructions of how to refill those things on the internet either. Minus 1 star for this!
My 2 cats took to it easily. All I did to acclimate them was to move their clay litterbox to the new location the day before the genie arrived, then swapped them without further ado. And one of the cats is a 8-year old wuss, the kind that doesn’t like change and can’t be located one hour after the doorbell rings.
I’m quite happy with my purchase at this point; this ingenious solution does away with the century- old cat litter problem, and I think it’s competitively priced as well.
One thing I should mention though: I don’t trust the timer. The thought of an overflowing and incessantly beeping (because that’s what it does when it malfunctions) cat toilet keeps me running this device on manual.
I had been considering the Cat Genie for several months and had seen their first version of it several years ago. Due to an injury in January, I finally forked over the cash for the Cat Genie to save the discomfort of carrying heavy bags of litter and stooping to clean the boxes.
First, I opened the box, giddy with excitement, only to find that both litter granule boxes were open and about 1/3 of their total contents had spilled all over the box. Not wanting to waste them, I spent a good hour trying to salvage what I could of them. I noted this on my product registration while asking for some replacement granules or an acknowledgment that they’d pack stuff better in the future, but never heard a word.
Second, the included fittings didn’t work with my plumbing. I don’t think I have unique plumbing, since my landlord buys everything from Home Depot. It took much consulting with the plumbing guys at Home Depot to sell me the THREE extra fittings to hook this baby up. The problem I encountered is: The more seams, the more places to leak. Yup, my biggest headache for the first week and a half was hooking and unhooking it, using teflon tape and pipe sealer so I could figure out which fitting was leaking and so I could happily take the pan out from under the pipe that was catching the water. With an injured hand, it was even more challenging.
Once that problem was solved…it seemed like I was home-free. But, soon after the cats were getting familiar with it, the litter stopped drying properly. Cold air was coming out of the blower. This, I realized, was from the plug not being completely pushed into the wall (my outlet is above my sink, therefore the gravity of the heavy cord makes it bow out ever so slightly). After making sure the plug is completely flush to the outlet we were good to go again!
Then, the cats stopped using it and only occasionally peed in it for the next few weeks. Obviously, I had to let them use their traditional box again. Thankfully they didn’t do their business all over the house. Yay for well-adjusted cats! They just followed me, crying, until I finally got the hint. Later, I realized it was because the litter granules were not drying under the top layer and, in fact, were really wet. Wet paws aren’t fun. So I ran the cleaning cycle, watched to make sure the water was being pumped out properly without any blockage and that hot air was coming out to dry. What I noticed was the cleaning rake was not aerating the granules, therefore, the blower was only hitting the top layer. In the meantime, I took to hand aerating the granules to get them to dry. As soon as I did this, the cats started tentatively using it again for their ones AND twos.
I emailed GiGi, the Cat Genie customer service manager (according to their “contact us” page), but never heard back. I had a free moment finally during their call center hours (thankfully they’re there on the weekends) and spent 20 minutes pressing buttons and manipulating the Cat Genie per the customer service reps instructions. He said that the processor unit would have to be replaced and that they were sending me a new one that would arrive in three business days. Simple enough.
I asked if he could include a Sani-Solution cartridge, since I had wasted a lot of it on running the cleaning cycle unnecessarily trying to see if it was an error on my end, but he said he couldn’t do that. That’s a bummer. I feel like I’ve been a beta tester for this thing, but without reward.
My fingers are crossed that my cats haven’t been totally turned off by the prospect of damp paws and will give it another shot as I slowly inch their other box closer to the Cat Genie. I really want this to work out. The hope of my getting out of litter duty is the only thing driving me to continue to slog through this. It’s a great concept, after all.
*******Updated December 28*******
Responding to a few comments: The reason it still got 4 stars was that it has reduced my regular litter box need to only one. I can now use Feline Pine in the single traditional box, which allows me to compost that waste, therefore hopefully making up for the water usage with the Cat Genie. I only need to buy one big bag of Feline Pine every other week for the kitties who won’t use the Cat Genie. That alone is saving hundreds of pounds of clay litter a year in my household alone.
Plus, the replacement processor that I received from the company has performed flawlessly since it arrived and is drying all the granules without fail. My only other problem was a blockage problem, but I discovered that the older toilet seat (I rent, not own) pressed down on the hose a little too tight because its plastic “feet” had broken and made the Cat Genie think it the hose was blocked (which I guess it kind of was), therefore setting off the alert buzzer. I replaced the toilet seat (it needed it anyway, and I only sprung for the cheapy $5 one) and haven’t had a problem since.
My pet sitter was so amazed by the Cat Genie that he’s recommending it to his other clients.
I still with I had heard from GiGi with customer service and still need to address a cleaning cartridge that said it was empty before it actually was, but I figure that it was a faulty microchip (reminds me of printer cartridges!). Other than that, I’ve been very happy with it.
I see on their site that they’re now charging $297 for their starter kit. Good price, especially if all us early adopters have gotten the kinks worked out for the rest of the world
I don’t know if my experience was worst-case scenario or what, but at this point, all the drama was worth the convenience and cleanliness.
I have four cats! It’s been a since I’ve had Cat Genie & only one of them uses it. I’ve ordered two extra boxes of granules to help with the adjustment. At first I was using their old litter brand in their old littler box & sprinkled more and more granules on top each day and now I’m just doing granules ONLY. They still want to go poopy on the floor in my living room. They do not like the granules, I don’t think. The one cat (Zack) that is going in the Cat Genie like a good lil kitty has takin the change like a champ. I am just about to give up hope with the other ones though. Not sure what to do.
Cats have always been a part of my life so it follows that I’ve had to schlep an awful lot of litter as well. Litter is heavy, expensive, and difficult to dispose of. There is no such thing as flushable litter! I have the plumbing bills to attest to that.
Then, while fast-forwarding through the commercials on TiVo, I happened to notice an intriguing ad for a new, automatic litter box, the Cat Genie. I was mesmerized, an actual flushing commode for the cats to use. The cats and I watched raptly as the professional actor cat used the box then observed the self-cleaning cycle.
This looked like the real deal, but we were skeptical. Two LitterMaids had let us down horribly and we did not want a replay of that experience. After a bit of on-line research, however, Cat Genie was starting to look even more attractive by the minute. I took a chance, I ordered one to check it out.
Big surprise, it works! It works exactly as described! The cats are ecstatic. I am ecstatic. As soon as the two additional units arrive, those nasty old litter boxes are going out the door, never to return.
We have only two, star-stealing, quibbles with this gadget. The Genie Arm doesn’t always get all the droppings at the beginning of the cycle. I find that I need to stand by with a scooper to insure that all that stuff goes into the hopper and does not fall back into the bowl. This is no big deal and is worth the minute it takes. Compare that to the hours each week you can spend carrying home litter, cleaning, scooping, and refilling boxes, and disposing of the mess.
The replacement cleaner solution is rather like a printer cartridge in that without one, the unit won’t work. They are not refillable either, despite the solution being cheaply available in gallon jugs of concentrate. Doubtless some clever cat lover will soon come up with a way to refill these things, thereby earning the undying love and adoration of cats and their slaves everywhere.
Cat Genie is not even very expensive when viewed in perspective. Premium clumping litters or crystals are very expensive and potentially harmful for kitty. Even clay litter can add up quickly if you have more than one or two cats. Disposal is always a problem. Even if this thing ends up costing the same over time in supplies as litter, it cleans itself. That is worth a lot to me!
Now all we need is a self-cleaning house….
Update:We now have 3 cat before we left on vacation. They all worked great while we were on our 2 week vacation. Why 3, all our cats seem to want to go poo at the same time and hate to go in the same box. One will even pee in one then poo in another one. My sister came to the house and immediately noticed the difference in the lack of cat poo smell. I’m still amazed by the product. Hopefully, they will make a bigger version for bigger cats (one of mine misses with her butt hanging out – I use the cat matts that are washable for those accidents).
We only have ours in our laundry room which I think is the best solution for location.
I’m not missing the poop scooping!!!!
With 4 cats (12yr,10yr,2 at 5yr), this product has saved time and smell! Patience was needed to oriented all 4 cats to using this. CatGenie customer support recommended Cat Attract and it helped immediately (order some and use for easier orientation). Cleaning it often helps with accidents and issues, we have it set for 4 times a day. Setup was a breeze. Recommend getting a web camera so you can monitor cat usage which helps determine when to set the auto timer. Some of the cons others mention are minor when you see benefits. Finding a cat sitter for 4 cats to come daily and scoop poop for vacations or long weekends is very hard so this product gives you freedom. When I told my husband about this product, he said get it – he didn’t even care about the price. It pays for itself quickly when you find yourself not having to clean litter boxes daily! The noise quickly becomes unnoticable by the cats and you, again the benefits are amazing…… (Once I showed a friend the cat genie and how it works, she’s now getting a cat since the litter box issue was her main reason for not having one.)
This product works exactly as advertised. It was very easy to hook up. We put it in the bathroom first and so hooked it up to the toilet, if you have an adjustable wrench, that and 5 minutes is all you need. We ended up connecting it to a garage utility sink for its final location and that was just as fast (they include both types of water connectors.
For number 2, the waste is pulverized, but when it goes into the sink there are 1-5 soft pellets the size of wet cat food which can be something that is not pleasing on the eye but harmless due to the sanitizer.
This is getting a 4 not a 5 because it does not have an autosensor and if you have a picky cat used to having a clean litter every time they use it(littermaid) they may refuse to use it if it hasn’t cleaned since the last cat went. This is my case and I have had a few “gifts” left next to it. I will keep it and the littermaid and hope that it helps lower my use of the littermaid to make it last longer (littermaids are notorious for the motor dying). If you think this may be a problem for your cat, for about $50 more you can order through the manufactuer and get a 90 day full refund policy.
This unit is a great idea but has some problems. The setup process is hard to get down but they actually have a customer service line that helps you each time you call!! It’s nice to not have cat skat that needs scooping and putting in bags for the trash. I would recommend this litter box, even with the problem phone calls.
I have one maine coon who loves this box, its a great size even for big cats. I love the perfectly clean litter box for no work, low monthly consumables cost, and generally no litterbox smell. The only bummer is its big and the power/water/drainage hookups mean install options are limited to bathrooms and laundry rooms for most homes. But if you have the space, its a terrific way to love a cat without loving its poo.
I bought this product back in July and at the time had a hard time setting it up. Our laundry room was not big enough so I tried to set it up in the spare bathroom. The fittings supplied were too small so I went to a hardware store where they created a device that would fit. Unfortunately this leaked too much so I unconnected it and set the Cat Genie aside for a few months. We recently had a plumber over to do some other work in the house so at that time he attached a two way valve and got the Cat Genie connected.
Unfortunately when I tried to run it the basin wouldn’t spin. I called Customer Support and they were great. They walked me through taking the unit apart and we found a bar was blocking the unit from spinning. Once this was fixed the unit worked fine.
Worked great for a couple of cycles and then it jammed while draining. I figured out that the toilet seat was pinching the hose and once I lifted the seat it drained fine. Now I just keep the seat up.
So now after all of my issues the unit is working great. I have one cat and run it twice a day. I still have to do a little manual scooping with small poops that the rake misses but this is so much better than the messy gross Litter Maid that I had.
I must note that there have been updates since I purchased my unit 2 years ago. I have multiple cats and multiple litter boxes. One cat took to it without any problem, another started using the toilet, one won’t use it and the fourth took a while but got there. Their customer support for this unit is fantastic – I know because I have had to call them numerous times. It has jammed, refused to flush, refused to fill – at one point they determined that the motor was faulty and sent a replacement overnight. It may sound like I don’t like it, but I actually do. It is expensive to maintain because of the granules and sanisolution smart cartridges. It would be nice if stores carried them so that you didn’t have to pay postage on top of the cost of the actual product.
I hated lugging litter from the store to my car, car to apartment, and apartment to trash. So, the CatGenie is the only one that solved that problem! When this machine works, it’s great. Problems, however, can range from the all-night head-banging-against-the-wall in frustration type to the takes-two-seconds-to-solve variety. Once the investment is made in the unit, I believe the operating costs and the time spent maintaining the unit equal or are less than those associated with a manual litterbox.
Additional things I’d like to highlight:
PROS:
- Cat (almost) always has clean litter
- Excellent customer service (from what I hear)
- No messing with cat pee or poo
CONS:
- Not all cats take to it (true of any automatic litterbox or type of litter)
- Takes up much more space than manual litterbox
- Need to be close to a water source and output
All in all, if you’re looking for an automatic litterbox, I’d just do your research and compare the available models to what you reasonably want out of an automatic litterbox. Be familiar with the possible malfunctions as they will eventually happen (anything with a moving part has to fail eventually) and see if you can live with it. If everything seems reasonable enough for you, go for it. I think the CatGenie is the most technological and hands-off litterbox out there, but it does have downsides. For me, it was worth dealing with these downsides.
We’ve had the Cat Genie for about 9 months. I think it is wonderful. We have a diabetic cat who urinates a lot. Other automatic litter boxes didn’t work as well and ended up being messy. The clumps were too big for the Litter Robot and the clumps would stick to the LitterMaid’s rake.
We’ve never had any problems with the Cat Genie clogging. The little white litter pellets are annoying and do end up all over the floor. I am willing to overlook that since it is much easier to sweep up the pellets than to scoop a smelly litter box.
I’d also recommend the non-scented sani-solution. The scented sani-solution can be a bit strong.
If you have a diabetic cat, the Cat Genie is definitely the way to go!
The CatGenie is an ingenious invention. It is easy to hook up and maintain. Our 15 year-old cat has no problem using it, and since we previously owned an automatic scooping litter box, the CatGenie did not scare her. The plastic pellets do scatter, but so far, that is the only down side to this product. We love the fact that we don’t have to deal with cat feces-EVER!
Ok so I have to say i was 50/50 going into this. I thought I would run into a lot of issues, but I have to say its been great. Installation was a breeze. I have this in my basement next to the slop sink which is great cause its out of the way. It has gotten jammed a few times but they book that comes with it is great for trouble shooting and figuring out what to do. I’ve had it for about 3 months. I have 2 cats. My next purchase is the dome to keep more litter in. All i can say is its nice not walking into do laundry and having the place stink!
I got the cat genie via [...]
They had a coupon offer as well.
Good luck!!
I bought this unit mainly be/c I’m tired of cat litter dust. Assembly and installation was a snap. The unit performs as expected. Our male cat was using it within 30mins of final assembly and first/test cleaning.
PROS:
No more litter dust and having to change out the litter every month.
Clean cat box.
Automatic cleaning.
CONS:
A little noisy.
Since the litter is non-scented the feces that is left in-between cleanings can really leave a foul odor.
I’ve had the CatGenie for a few days now, and it does all the literature claims. However, as with anything, there’s always room for improvements. First, I have large cats. Not fat, they weigh around 15 pounds or so and stand at 12″ at the shoulders. The 19″ bowl could be 24″ diameter for bigger cats. A clip on splash-guard around both sides extending up around 5 inches would help to keep the pee in for those cats with bad aim, or have a [...], like mine do. Also, cats have to step up 8″ to clear the bowl rim, then step down four inches and straddle that same rim. If you cat has a pot-belly, which one of mine does, or is arthritic, this stepping-up-and-over-then-straddle-then-step-into-a-hole is cumbersome for them. A four inch riser in the front, used as a step extending out about 8-10 inches, would help these types of cats. A human stairway only has 7″ rise in each step anyway. The litter could be either heavier in weight, or less clingy when wet so as not to stick to the paws, and thusly get flicked off by the cat all over the floor. All in all, I’m very happy with it. I clean it manually once a day with three cats, which seemed much easier to do then run it automatically, and has turned out to be an easier method, too. That way, I can run it when they are all sleeping and hopefully won’t need it for that crucial 34 minutes the bathroom is closed for cleaning. For now, I plan to make a riser step out of wood to wrap around the base, and use aluminum flashing to fabricate a splash guard until the CatGenie people come up with my improvement ideas, hopefully they’ll read this. As far as hooking it up, it was easy. [...]
This cat litter is much more reliable than the Littermaids I used to have. Its ability to flush the waste into the sewer in liquid form means I do not even have to empty any used litter. The only maintenance it needs is occasional topping up of the reusable granules and replacement of the sanitation solution cartridges. My only complaint is that it cleans itself on a regular schedule based on a timer. It would be better it if cleaned itself after each time one of my 2 cats used it. It already has sensors to stop it from starting a cleaning cycle if a cat is still using the litter so I do not see why it cannot incorporate that functionality. That is the only aspect in which the Littermaid is superior.
I’ve had the Cat Genie for a few months now and like it.
1. It is funny to tell your landlady, after she so graciously agreed to watch your two cats over the weekend, that in this house we clean the litter box by flushing the toilet. That was a first in her book.
2. The lack of smell in the house. No cat smell. Except…
3. When the Cat Genie misses a piece of poo and bakes it. Then Oust and an open window are your best friend.
4. I have mine set on once a day regular and then I check and run it when necessary at other times. Like when my female has the stank poo. I can get that out of the house and into the sewer in just a few minutes with the push of a button and a flush. Not like the old days of dealing with liquid feces stuck to the teeth of the littermaid.
5. You clean a litter box by flushing the toilet. That’s so nice. Just make sure you try to schedule your cleanings for when you are home so if there is a clog, you are on it. Anyone who schedules the automatic cleaning for after they leave for work may come home to problems.
6. I am going to plead with them to change their litter. I find it everywhere. On every surface the cats have stepped on. I’ve woke up to it in my bed. The dog has it in his bed. It is a nightmare to keep up with and the main reason this review didn’t get 5 stars.
I have been very pleased with my CatGenie. My cats started using it right away – they were used to the Purrforma automatic litterbox so the noises weren’t a consideration to them. I have had a couple of kitty accidents, but only when one of the other cats had left a package in the bowl – the cats are used to the litter being scooped after each use. That is the only shortcoming for this product as far as I have discerned so far – I don’t count a few granules of the litter, either from tracking or the wash cycle, outside the box a problem as that has occurred with all boxes/litter I have tried over the last 20+ years.
The shortcoming for CatGenie is that it needs to do a scoop cycle after the cat leaves the box instead waiting for the next wash cycle that is scheduled or run manually. It doesn’t necessarily need to flush each time, just remove any feces and place them in a storage area to be disposed of when the wash cycle occurs. There are scanners in place to prevent a wash cycle starting while a cat is in the bowl, looks to me like only minor changes (probably software) would be needed to make it scoop after each use.
I like the fact that the urine runs through the litter and out the bottom of the bowl to be disposed of next wash cycle, and since the unit is washed regularly, there is no ammonia smell at all. Not using up litter in big clumps of litter/urine is a big plus over all other boxes I’ve used, including the Purrforma and Littermaid automatic scoopers.
I was concerned that the SaniSolution that is used for cleaning the bowl and litter would have a strong odor which would discourage the cats from using the CatGenie, but that has proven not to be so. In fact, one cat is quite interested in watching the wash cycle up close and personal, standing with front paws on the rim and even looking behind the unit to try to find where the feces went when dumped. That would indicate to me that the odor of the cleaning solution is not offensive at all to cats, and it’s pleasant to humans as well.
To sum it up. Overall, I’m very pleased with the CatGenie. Just wish it’d scoop the litter each time to guarantee the other cats can dig without finding any “treasure”.
We have had our Cat Genie for a about 6 weeks. We have 3 cats.
Pros: It is set up to run 2 times a day (they recommend 3-4 times for 3 cats but 2 times works just fine for us). It runs by itself with no issues other than adding a handful for 2 of granules every week or 2. We purchased the hood and the litter mat, which keeps most of the litter in. It is no louder than our dishwasher or washing machine. It has not broken or clogged, ever. My girlfriend and I don’t fight about cleaning up the litter box anymore.
Cons: Small pieces of poo are missed sometimes. When the unit dries the litter, it smells like baking poo. The sani-solution is not so pleasant an aroma (get the unscented kind). Some cats are terrified of the thing. 2 of our cats are scared of anything new, and it took some time and patience to get them used to it (probably about a month).
For us, the good outweighs the bad. I sweep up the granules that get on the floor every so often. I have the Cat Genie run right when we go to bed and after we are at work to avoid to bad smell. We were patient with our cats, and they adjusted. Problems solved.
This product is AWESOME! It scoups, washes and dries the litter then pumps the waste out!
I’ve had this product for about 3-4 months and all i have to do is change the sanitizer cartridge and add litter once a month! I have only one cat and have the unit set to run twice per day.
I also had the littermaid and this BLOWS IT AWAY!!! I was always cleaning the LitterMaid-GROSS!!!
Cons:
- a bit noisy, sounds like a washing machine only half as loud
- does not automatically run cleaning cycle immediately after the cat uses it like the littermaid does.
- You can set it to run 1-4 times daily. 1 = every 24 hours, 2 = every 12 hours, 3 = every 8 hours and 4 = every 6 hours. I have mine set to twice daily which means if my cats decides to go #2 just after a cleaning cycle and i’m not there to manually “flush” it the waste will fester there for 12 hours.
if this were an automatic scouper like the litter maid i would give it 10 stars!!!!
When we bought our house, we inherited a cat that was feral as a youngin’, so he did not grow up on the litter box. I have had potty training issues with him since day one and the only success I have ever had is to reinforce litter importance by locking him in a giant dog crate with his box and food so that he does not have a choice, but this works for only a few days after you let him out.
Curtis will poop just outside the box and sometimes pees in it…..he is consistently inconsistent, but generally poops on the floor even with a freshly cleaned box! I tried it all- bought a bigger litter box, swapped litters, changed cleaning items, ruled out medical issues, changed food and box location- nothing worked. He’s just nutty when it comes to litter.
When I first got the CG, he eventually tried it, but then he snuck in on the 2nd day and freaked out when he saw it cleaning. Curtis was afraid (yet curious) so I sat with him while it cleaned and praised him heavily when he used the box. I decided to baby gate him in the bathroom with it and his food and only let him out either with supervision or after he has “gone”, then I start the cycle which he always hangs around to watch. After 3 weeks, he has learned that the CG won’t eat him and it only cleans his mess up. He is no longer afraid and has pooped and peed in the box for 4 days straight. Really- it’s a miracle!!! I’ll supervise him just like I would a new puppy- until he consistently gets it right, but what a lifesaver this product is! Well worth the $$$
The only complaint I have (and reason this does not get 5 stars) is I felt like the ad lead me to believe the box senses when your cat leaves then begins the cleaning cycle. Not so- you set it to clean as you would a lamp timer. This potentially wastes cleaning solution if your cat has not used it or is not regular. The only thing to make this product better is the sensor to clean when the box is used!
Also, buy from Cat Genie directly in order to get the warranty and return policy benefits. I got the Tuxedo package with non scented cartridges, but they all look the same so I am not sure I got what I asked for.
I have not had the poo baking experience other users mention and in fact I have had the opposite experience. My husband strongly dislikes the litter box smell and since we hooked up the CG, he has not said a single word about it! Win-Win for me!
I love this box- it has made a huge difference in my quality of life and I cannot argue with not having to clean up Curtis’ mess! He knows it, too because he is a happier more engaged cat!
This product works as advertised, haven’t had any problem with the box, however the cleaning process scares some of the cats, have had problems with cats going where they’re not supposed to. But only occasionally. Had to by dome and will buy mats when available, because they kick alot of litter out. Sometimes it doesn’t catch all the poo, when that happens the smell of baked cat poo and cleaner can be quite potent. Purchased a arm&hammer air freshner to put in the cat box. So only improvements I can think of would be quieter operation, and some form of air purification. That’s why the 4 stars.
I love this product! I had a little trouble with the motor when I first got it, but a quick call to the mfg and I had a new motor the next day. This is easy to set up, easy to use and the mfg stands behind their product. What’s not to love.
I found this product on accident while searching for newspaper litter (my cat was getting spayed), and what a happy accident it was. So far, this product has lived up to its name. My kitten Tora (10 mos.) took to the CatGenie right away. Many will complain about the litter pellets on the floor, but, you get that with conventional litter as well. At least when the pellets get wet, they do not stick permanently to the floor like conventional litter.
My only complaint had nothing to do with the product itself, but that my washing machine drain is not big enough to accommodate both hoses. I am currently switching hoses back and forth until I find a T-connector recommended by the CatGenie help line.
I choose the washing machine hose drain as a convenience, and it was relatively easy to hook up. As I said, my kitten took to it very easy (which is rare, as I understand) and I am extremely pleased with the CatGenie.
I have two cats, one 5yo and one 2yo, both female. I got the Cat Genie for them, after dealing with several other auto-scooping litter boxes that broke after maybe 6 months each.
In terms of cleanliness and maintenance, this is a great product. If you can put it in your laundry room, you’ll be much happier than if you put it into a bathroom that sees any kind of frequent use. If you DO put it into a bathroom, make sure you flush the toilet at least once a day (but NOT while the cat genie is in a cleaning cycle!)
Some words of warning:
1) the little plastic pellets that act as “litter” get all over the floor. You’ll have to sweep them up occasionally and dump them back into the bowl for cleaning. This isn’t from the cats kicking them up, it’s from the normal cleaning cycle … there’s a mechanism to shake the rake free of pellets, which causes some to scatter.
2) Be prepared for a long adjustment period with your cats. The 2yo took to it pretty well, but the older cat had a hard time. She used a laundry basket, a bathroom rug, and my bed before she finally came to grips with it and started using the genie. (Laundry hint: white vinegar in the washer gets out the smell of cat urine!)
Now that the cats have adjusted and I’ve gotten used to the new sounds and smells of cleaning (the cleaning solution has a potent but not terrible smell), I’m happy with this product.
I have now owned 2 versions of a self washing cat box: a Litter Free, and now a Cat Genie. The Litter Free, while not perfect, made me appreciate how nice it is not to tend a litter box. However, that unit had plenty of flaws, and a newly formed company engineered a better unit that fixed a lot of the issues the Litter Free.
I purchased the unit in September of 2006. I am on my 10th month. Up until recently, I was not the happiest person with the unit… I had a lot of clogging issues. Had I given up on the unit a few months ago, my review would have been very mixed, with the unit failing to process its daily duties a few times a month. However, I knew the company was working on some improvements to the most common issues, and my patience was rewarded (more on this later).
If you read the other reviews, you probably have an idea how the unit works. Up to 4 times a day the unit will clean the box. First, the stool is removed by a scoop. The stool is dumped into a processing unit. The litter box is filled with water, which also fills the stool processing bin with water. There is an impeller which spins the stool around the processor, that dissolves the waste, and then the waste water is pumped out through your sewer connection. The unit is filled with water and flushed several times. During the last flushing, a sanitizing solution is dispensed into the water. Once that water is removed, the litter is dried, and the process is done. This takes about 30 minutes.
There were two big problems that affected some early purchasers of the box. Due to a packing issue with the original unit, some buyers got warped bowls that would not spin properly. This wasn’t a hard fix. You either got a new bowl with their excellent customer service, or they walked you through a process to unwarp the bowl. The packing issue was resolved, and this is no longer a problem. The biggest issue was clogging of the water exhaust line from undissolved stool. Not only did it stop the show, but the unit would not drain (leaving it filled with water), but cleaning up this mess is not fun. This is the part of my Cat Genie experience which was not fun. I have a single cat that uses the litter box once a day. Her stool is small and hard. It was clogging a lot. I found a dietary solution before the mechanical solution came out. I bought her food high in fiber, which softened the stool, and the unit processed without any failures for 2 months. That seemed to do it. Then the makers of Cat Genie came out with a new impeller. It prevented the hardened small stool from making it into the water drain line before it had been properly reduced. From all the comments I am reading from owners on forums where litter boxes are discussed, this fixed just about all those problems. People that had nightmares before replaced the impeller (again, all under warranty) to have the unit operating correctly without issue.
The Cat Genie folks said that the actual number of people with the clogging issues was a small percentage, but they are very vocal group.
The biggest problem I now have with the box is the plastic granules that get tracked through my house. The company is going to have some mats that catch these granules as the cat gets out to help mitigate this, but at the time of this review, they were not available. I think the price of the supplies is reasonable, and cheaper than buying normal litter on a regular basis.
You should read other reviews for information on cat acclimation to this box. My cat was raised on plastic litter granules. That is all she knows, and has not problem using this box. So for that reason, I can’t really tell you much about in this area.
One thing I want to note for people on the fence: You get a 90 day money back guarantee if you don’t like it. The customer service for this unit is TOP NOTCH. They will do just about anything to make you happy. The unit has a 2 year warranty, which is better than just about any major appliance you could buy. Assuming your cat adjusts to the box, this will make a noticeable improvement to the quality of your life.
I saw the Cat Genie late one night on an infomercial. I usually don’t pay attention to infomercials, but I’ve had two cats for three years and I was tired of cleaning litter. I researched this product online and decided to make the investment. It took a week to get my cats used to it, but now that they have I can’t imagine owning my cats without it. This thing works and works well. I’ve owned other automatic litter boxes, but this one works just lik its advertised.
I have large cats and I was spending over $30 a month for litter and the room in the basement where the litter was was a mess and never seemed to be clean. I’ve since reclaimed the room and I am spending way less in litter supplies. The kitty litter is clean and the waste goes down my sewer drain.
Yes the Cat Genie costs quite a bit, and you need the cleaning solution to make the Cat Genie work. But think about what you are probably spending a year on litter, all the time you spend cleaning the litter, and the accidents that your cats may have when you forget or neglect to clean the litter and the Cat Genie is well worth the price. The way I figure it the Cat Genie is going to pay for itself in two years or less and my house feels and smells cleaner. If the price worries you search the internet and you will be able to find a better deal.
Over the more than 40 years that I’ve owned cats, the one aspect of cat ownership that always bothered me was the problem of the litter pan. I’ve tried all the so called solutions – clumping, dumping, sifting – you name it. But always with the same result – a smelly, dirty, disgusting mess. If the cats themselves hadn’t been such a pleasure I would have never tolerated what amounted to the constant need to handle raw sewage in my home.
About 10 years ago I thought that I had discovered a real solution when a product called the Littermaid came out. It promised to electronically rake the waste into a sealed container – ready for easy disposal. The ads were very convincing – then I bought one. It did nothing more than exacerbate the problem. Waste stuck to the rake. Pieces of waste were left in the pan. The smell was just as bad. In short, an expensive non solution.
So, you can imagine that when a friend told me about something called the CatGenie I was more than a little skeptical. But since this person has never steered me wrong on anything else, I decided to give it a try. AM I GLAD I DID! This thing is amazing. ALL the waste is removed. It is then liquefied and flushed out of the unit AND OUT OF MY HOME! The permanent litter like granules are washed in a number of washing cycles and then they’re dried for the next use. I can set it to run at designated times (the middle of the night, for example) or I can run it manually whenever I want. The only maintenance that’s required is the replacement of the cleaning solution about once a month or so – and that’s a lot cheaper than buying litter.
My three cats took to it right away and they actually seem to enjoy watching it when it’s in action. The hookup was idiot proof. It had to be because, believe me, I’m no handyman.
What else can I say. This IS the solution. It’s not inexpensive but, given the myriad of problems that it solves so effortlessly, it’s worth many times the price to me. It’s not just some Rube Goldberg gadget like so many other so called litter solutions – it’s almost like having another 21st century appliance to do that job that none of us really wants to face every day.
I give it an unqualified recommendation. Get one as soon as you can – you won’t be sorry.
I have to admit when I first saw the web site for Cat Genie. I was very skeptical. I have one large ragdoll and a picky himalayan and after trying ALL the automatic litter boxes avalible, I assumed there would be some big unforseen negative to the Cat Genie. So I ordered and waited. Two weeks later, I had the Cat Genie in hand. I was able to hook it up in about 30 minutes without the need of my husband. Very very easy. All you need is a wrench and the ability to turn the water off. I was also afraid that my cats would be scared of the Cat Genie or refuse to use it because of the plastic pellets, but they took to it immediatly and my worries quickly dimenished. Two months later and I am still happy. My only job now is to flush the toilet for them.
Cat Genie uses reusable plastic cat littler; drains cat pee; rakes cat poop and liquifies it; then pumps it out to your toilet; uses cold water and sanitizer to then wash, scrub, sanitize and dry cat litter leaving a fresh clean box for your cat(s) daily.
Pros:
1 Never have to buy and carry large bags of cat litter again.
2 Dust Free.
3 Fresh clean box once or twice daily, depending on how many times you want to run it (recommended one time per cat per day).
4 Never need to scrub and wash a litter box again.
5 Never carry heavy dirty litter to the trash again.
6 Easy Hook Up.
Cons:
1. HUGE. (The thing takes up a good portion of my bathroom but then again I live in an apartment and have a small bathroom so if you have a large bathroom or better yet an extra bathroom or a laundry room, this won’t be a con for you)
2. Hoses are rather cumbersome if you don’t need the entire length of them (which in a small bathroom, I don’t).
3. The rake can miss the cat poop (which means the cat poop gets washed, scrubbed and dried – which for me meant burning three glade candles, scooping the missed pieces of cat poop, and rerunning a wash cycle to get rid of the awful smell which was probably toxic).
4. Not entirely scoop-free… See con #3; I never want to smell that smell again and will probably scoop the poop before running–not a huge deal since you are in the bathroom anyway and the litter is flushable. Also, since it’s dust free you’re not inhaling the dust of normal cat litter.
5. The box drains the cat pee into a bucket underneath the litter bowl (it has small drain holes in it); Also the cat poop is left in the bowl until either you run a wash cycle or it runs automatically at the time you set up. So, since the litter is non-aborbent, it won’t temporarily cover the smell like normal cat litter does. But still, the whole scenario smells so much better than normal used litter in a box.
6. Buy a dust buster, the plastic re-usable litter is lightweight and will be tracked out of the box. In this way, it’s very much like normal cat litter but it doesn’t stick to the floor like regular cat litter and is easier to clean/ vacuum. You can’t really sweep and toss the litter back in the bowl because you don’t want to be adding cat hair you might have swept up as well for the next reason I will mention.
7. Brush, brush, brush your cat gently down the back. Cat hair is in poop and cat hair can supposedly cause clogs and drains in this machine. It hasn’t happened to me but I did notice cat hair in the toilet after I ran the machine. Catgenie specifically tells you to make sure you brush your cat to limit the amount of hair he ingests and passes through in his feces. (See con #4 – another reason to scoop poop)
8. It takes half hour to run completely (and apparently my cat could not hold it until the machine finished and decided to pee in the puppy’s bed instead – poor Oscar).
9. Expensive. Supposedly in the long run – in years – it will be cheaper than the normal litter box set-up, but with the expensive supplies, I haven’t worked out if this is true or not.
10. If the company goes out of business, you’re out of luck with refilling your supplies (litter and sanitizer) so stock up.
11. When the machine dries the litter, expect your whole bathroom to be nice and toasty. This could be a pro as well, I guess.
12. Ugly hose permanently over your toilet. Live with it or buy a normal litter box.
13. Sometimes the draining can cause splashing in your toilet and you may find some mess on your toilet seat (very minor, few droplets, no big deal).
Notes:
My cats adjusted quite nicely to it – very surprising since I have one cat who is nervous and would never use an automatic rake litter box because he was scared of it. I prevented him being scared of it by closing the bathroom door when it’s running so he won’t have a clue. The other cat was strange about it, would use it and then retreat to his next favorite spot (bathroom floor) and pee there. He always did this, regardless of which box was used. I prevented this by placing tin foil (and scrubbing lemon oil on top with a cotton ball) on the floor where he likes to pee and it hasn’t happened since. I think his peeing on the floor was out of habit instead of being scared of the new box. Also, my cats aren’t exactly small (they take after me), yet the bowl is big enough for them.
I decided on scooping poop before running it for reasons #1 so the rake doesn’t miss it and wash and dry it #2 prevent clogging in the hoses #3 save on sanitizing fluid. I have two cats, so by scooping the poop I only run it once a day to drain the urine and wash the litter. Like I said, I don’t mind this since the litter is dust-free and flushable.
For my personal situation, the pros I listed very much outweigh all of the cons for me – especially never having to drag boxes of cat litter to my apartment from my parking spot or dragging dirty litter out to the trash. I just listed out as many cons as I could think of so you would know what to expect. I have only had it almost a week so I haven’t had any mechanical failures but based on other reviews I have read, it seems to be hit or miss. Some people have had a wonderful experience while others have had breakdowns, more than once and on more than one replacement machine. We shall see, knock on wood or a cat’s head. (I will however, go out and buy emergency normal litter and a pan in case I find myself looking at cat litter swimming in a bowl of water if the machine breaks down on me.) When I spoke to a customer service rep, he said to me “make sure the litter is drying completely”… well, that made me nervous and made me expect a problem in the future.
And come to think of it, already, a normal litter box sounds so ancient to me and I will never return to one as long as this machine keeps on kickin’. I predict simplified, smaller and better versions will come along in years to come.
My wife and I have owned the Cat Genie for about 4 weeks now and love it. When I first read about it, I thought it was a joke and couldn’t stop laughing at the cat toilet that someone had ‘invented’, but the thing really works well. We have 2 cats (sisters, 9 months old) and they seem to do very well with it. One of the cats started using it immediately and preferred it over the old litter box. The other took about a week to train (suggested time frame from the company). In the training process there were a couple of accidents, but they were all in our laundry room. Ironically, one of the accidents was on the instruction manual for the Cat Genie! After this initial phase-in of 1-1.5 weeks, we haven’t had any problems. We set the device to clean itself 2 times per day when our cats are inactive (4am and 4pm) and that works well. We have it hooked up to our laundry drain pipe for waste disposal and that works well (no clogs so far, although I have heard that others have problems if the waste isn’t removed often enough, i.e. less than once per day)
We both love the device and think that it is worth the price that is being charged and the fact that we don’t have to scoop and dispose of normal cat litter. We had been thinking about getting one of the other ‘automatic’ litter boxes, but you still have to empty these devices on a weekly basis and I’ve heard that they don’t work well.
As with any consumer product there are faults, but I feel the gains much out way the faults.
Pros:
-The first fully automatic litter box!
-only $ 330 (not much for what it does)
-relatively reliable (could take vacation without too much worry for litter box, although I would want someone to check-in once or twice)
-The box is always clean for the cats (they seem to prefer this now that they are used to it)
-The plastic litter pellets are clean and are easy to sweep up
Cons:
-somewhat loud (not as loud as a washing machine though)
-litter pieces tend to scatter out (we are buying a special hood that just came out)
-smell of cleaning solution is strong (it is a pleasant smell, but it smells like cleaning solution in a large part of the house for an hour after a cleaning cycle)
-$330. Thats a lot of money for anything, but especially on a litter box
-somewhat large (the bowl is larger than a standard toilet bowl, but is about the same size as our previous litter box, so it makes sense I guess)
Also, some people complain about the cost of the consumables (litter pellets, and cleaning solution), but I think I agree with the company in that the consumables cost about the same price as the normal litter, if not a bit cheaper.
Improvements I would like to see for V2.0:
-more flexible cleaning times (for 2 times per day it cleans 12 hrs apart, 3 cycles is 8 hrs apart, and so on). I would like it to clean at 4am and at 1pm but this isn’t possible now.
-It would be nice if it came with a hood, but that is an add-on now
-deeper litter depth (right now it can only allow for 3-4cm of litter depth and its seems like our cats would like to bury their waste a little deeper
-quieter cleaning cycles (but a more flexible cleaning time cycle would make this point moot if we were gone for the day or asleep)
-smaller total size, although the litter bowl size is about perfect
So, if you have the initial $330 for a litter box and want it to be automatic, then this thin is awesome and I highly recommend it. However, if your mission is to save money, then it doesn’t make sense as a purchase.
Hope this was helpful!
Hey, good people! I have been using the Cat Genie for about six months. It has not malfunctioned once in all that time. If this product died I would bury it in the backyard with a tombstone. It delivers 100% of the expectations. My Abyssinian figured it out within seconds of installation and knows that upon completion of the cycle the granules are sanitized, dry and WARM. Naturally, that’s the combo he waits for. I am 72 years old and cat litter was becoming a major consideration. No more! Cat litter? What’s that? Thank you for you sensational product.
This is the best present I’ve ever bought myself. I’ve been very curious about this machine for awhile. I finally read enough reviews and figured I’d try it out. I own a few of the other “auto” boxes, but nothing works like this does. And it really does work!
Here’s just a few things that I found out that weren’t in any reviews that I saw:
When it arrived, I was so thankful I had it delivered since I’m on the third floor and the shipping box was huge! The machine itself is very easy to put together. You just drop the pieces into place and it’s ready.
My neighbor had to do the water hook-up for me, but only because I didn’t have a big enough wrench or the strength to get the water hose from the washing machine undone. That was the only difficutly I had with the instal/set-up.
Because of the layout of my small utility room, the box had to be set up in the corner in front of the dryer, not the washer. I was worried about the hoses on the box not being long enough, but they are. They go along the wall past the side of the dryer, behind the dryer and up to the water hook-up and out-flow. The power cord is long, too.
I would say (like the others) to definately put it in the utility room. With the use of the water out-flow from the washing machine, this box becomes hassle-free. I was worried about the box being on the ground and the water out-flow being up on the wall, but it works fine.
If you are planning on putting it in the bathroom, check to see if you have a flexible hose from the water valve to the toilet tank. It has to be able to bend. (there’s no way around this part, I tried!) If not and you want to put it in there, just go to the hardware store with the measurements of how long your hose is and they can sell you a flex hose. (might want to do it before it gets there because you’ll really REALLY want to set it up right away)
I have three cats which is the most they recommend for one box. I tried a few ways to get them to adjust, but the instructions say to put another box next to it, let it get messy, then the cats will want to use the new box. That worked. All three cats (ages 10, 3 and 2) have adjusted to it now (about three week process…one slow learner) and even watch it run sometimes. If you plan on putting this box somewhere you don’t have a box now, relocate a box there before this one arrives to get the cats used to “going” in that area. Then leave that box next to this one for awhile but don’t scoop it and that should help them with the change.
The smell from the santizer is ‘unique’ and pretty strong, but it’s so much better than the smell of a litter box! It just smells like a bathroom cleaner.
I’ve noticed that since my thermostat on the condo is near the box, the dryer cycle seems to set off the a/c. That’s just because it really is hot air drying the litter. Just something to think about when you are deciding where to place it.
Definately have some bath mats ready when you get this. The little litter pieces do stick to their paws, and having the bath mats down has helped catch those and I can just shake them back into the box. Also, you may want to order another box of litter. Two come with it, but you use one right away and the second for top-ups. I’ve had the box about a month now and need to get more litter, but just to keep the level up.
If you have a cat(s), do yourself the biggest favor and get this machine. It really does what it says it will do. Also, it seems very well built and solid, unlike some of the other auto-boxes on the market. And it is so clean!!!
If you are considering an automatic cat box look no further, don’t even bother wasting money on other types.
I just purchased the self flushing cat box after getting my third cat. I have a 5 yo, 4 yo and a 12 week old kitten. It took them about 2 days to completely switch over to the new box and they have never had any type of automatic litter box. I switched them over by one of the recommended methods, left their regular cat box right next to it but wouldn’t clean it. Eventually they preferred the CatGenie. I did keep them away while it was doing its cleaning cycle so they wouldn’t be scared but after about 4 days it didn’t bother them at all. Now they like to watch it.
So I have had it going for about 3 weeks now and I don’t know how I lived without it. It is awesome. It took me about 30 minutes to set up in my laundry room (which is also their cat room). The ONLY thing that I can say negative about this box is the litter gets everywhere and not because of the washing cycle like another reviewer said but because the cats kick it out and track it everywhere.
I seriously love this product and would highly recommend it to anyone that hates cleaning up cat crap…Now I never have to touch it, smell it or go near it.
It was worth every penny and I will never use any other product.
This is only a partial clip. First the scooper scoops out stuff a few times as it rotates and then it gets filled with water and it slowly spins. This happens a few times and then it gets drained via small holes on the bottom and the it gets dried! There is a drying contraption and warm air is blown on the washable granules! It seems a bit loud for the estimate of 8 minutes it goes on but my bedroom is opposite of my condo so I’m sure it won’t bother me in my sleep! Set up was a breeze. Make sure you have a large monkey wrench. I didn’t need to buy any other accessories.
This review may change as my cat hasn’t used it yet but I can tell I already love it.. esp because of the sanitizer! No more smelly poo!
We tried littermaid and still use it in our motor home, but we absolutly LOVE the cat genie for our 2 spoiled and large cats. We would not only buy it again, we’re getting one for my sister for her birthday, and recomending it to everyone we know with cats. We’ve been using it for the past 5 months and it has clogged twice. [an easy clean-up and fix] Much less hassle than the litter maid and no smell or dealing with overflowing cartridges. [ or my DH's attempts to 'modify' the littermaid so it will hold more, or use bags or boxes, etc... which never work and make a smelly MESS!!] Every now and then the ’soap box’ will jiggle loose and might need a tap to re-seat it, but you get a beep to warn you.
Now if they would only make a smaller cat genie for the rv.
We have three cats and, due to allergy problems, I couldn’t clean our traditional litter box. That left the task to my husband, who didn’t clean it as frequently as my sensitive nose would have liked. In stepped the CatGenie to save the day!
Pros:
1) My house smells great! I am really picky about cat smell, and you would never know that we have cats at all, much less three in a small space.
2) The cats took to it immediately. I was amazed at how easy the transition was for all of them.
3) My house is cleaner. Let’s face it, who likes finding pieces of kitty litter that the cat has picked out of her toes in their bed? Yuck! Problem solved. While the plastic pellets scatter somewhat (like any litter), they are infinitely more pleasant–since clay litter is, essentially, dirt!
4) It is ridiculously fun to watch. It has practically replaced the TV.
Cons:
1) Ours came with a warped bowl, which caused it to stop spinning. We had to bump it to get it to spin again. BUT, CatGenie has great customer service (as others have noted), and they walked us through a cycle to reform the bowl. When that, unfortunately, didn’t work, they rushed a new bowl out to us in no time free of charge, and now it works great.
2) Because you must hook it up to plumbing and a drain, you are somewhat limited in where you can put your litter box.
I would recommend CatGenie without hesitation. It’s a nearly purrfect solution!
I am the laziest person in the entire world and knew I’d need a sophisticated cat litter solution if I were going to own a cat. Well, I read all the reviews for this thing and decided it was worth a shot. I am really really glad I did. It is ridiculously easy in every way. Installation took about 3 minutes from closed box to fully installed litter system. The kitten understood immediately what it was for and transitioned into using it with no problems. If you’re like me and want to make pet-ownership as thoughtless and easy as possible, this is the thing to get. A little expensive, but anyone who has changed lots of cat litter will agree that it’s worth its weight in gold to not have to deal with that ever again. Also, the catgenie website has videos of the thing in action if you want to see how it works. If you’ve read this far into my review, stop reading and buy this thing. You’ll surely be as impressed as I am with it.
We love our cat genie! We’ve had it for about three months now, and it’s working great. Sometimes the bowl gets stuck and won’t turn, but it’s easy to fix, and it’s only done that a few times since we’ve had it.
Our older cat took to it immediately. Our younger cat is still a little wary of it, but he’s using it. We had to follow the tips of keeping a regular litter box next to cat genie and letting it build up and get all yucky to give him the incentive to use the new, clean cat genie. But he has finally been converted.
It is WONDERFUL to have clean cat litter every day. I have it set on manual and I just push the button once in the morning and once in the evening and let it do its thing. The beeping when the cartridge gets low is annoying, but I only run cat genie when I’m around and can hear it and then reset it when it does that.
My husband and I used to loathe dealing with our cats’ litter box. Now the problem is solved. It’s worth every single cent!
This is a wonderful product. My cats adjusted in a matter of days and I have had no problems with the unit. If you hate dealing with a litter box, this is your solution. It is noisy when it starts up but I now sleep through it when it starts at 2 AM. It runs automatically 4 times a day (every 6 hours). The box is spanking clean after it runs. No fuss. Yes, the pellets do spread, but so did regular litter and crystal litter. A quick run with the electric broom takes care of them.
Buy one and see for yourself.
I recently lost a cat to FIP – which comes from a mutation of a corona virus – which is transmitted by way of the litterbox (poo). It’s such an awful disease that I went on a crusade to find a litterbox system that really cleaned my litter. I’ve had a littermaid for years and it was the best system out there until I found this Cat Genie. Still with the Littermaid and the various iterations thereof – you end up having to get personal with your dirty litter. And it’s hard to find a good clumping litter that is not dusty or if not dusty, gooey. If you want or need super clean litter – and you don’t want to get it by changing out your litter every day – this is the answer. Since corona virus is very common in multi cat environments like catteries and shelters – it’s the FIP mutation that is not – I wanted to be sure before bringing another cat into the house, that I did everything I could to limit transmission and reduce or eliminate the virus from my household as I have another cat at home who is not sick. I don’t know if this is the perfect answer – but you do get a very clean litter, your cat toilet is washed out at least once a day and there aren’t any lumps and mushy clumps in the litter sitting around just waiting for another cat to stomp on it and mush it up or have it stick to their feet and track it around.
It was very easy to set up in our guest 1/2 bath. All the supplies I needed were in the box – except I did go out and get an extension to the water hose so I could run it around the perimeter of the room to the toilet. The waste hose was plenty long enough and it sits on the rim of my toilet. We use that bath frequently, so I can check on the CG and I can start the cleaning cycle when needed. I expect that setting it to clean automatically while we are away for a day or two will be pretty nice too – especially for our friends who come by to feed the kitties.
As silly as it may sound, with the CG, I think I can finally relax and feel more confident about my kitties litterbox.
I have not had problems with tracking litter out of the box or it blowing out of the bowl. I have a large cat 20 lb Maine Coon and she is a big girl, long too. It’s a bit of a squeeze but she did not seem to have any problem with changing over from her large, dusty litter pan to the CG. She is using it and not some other place. When she hops out of the CG she does not drag a pile of litter with her or scatter litter pellets – and I had a lot more problems with the regular clumping litter than this stuff.
So far I have been pleasantly suprised by how well it worked and how easily my big girl has taken to this new cat waste removal system. I would recommend it to anyone who wants clean litter and very little personal involvement in the whole cat waste cleaning process.
I have been down the LitterMaid path for a few years. Those are some bad designs that only seem to have gotten worse. I really wanted a litter box that would eliminate the stray turds caught in rakes, clumps shot across the room by binding tines, and piles of litter around the hopper from hoppers that don’t fit right.
I looked at the Cat Genie and its unusual design. I, like you, read the reviews here and elsewhere. After all, it IS a $300 cat box. I bought one. Hook up is simple; I put mine in the utility room and plumbed it into the laundry cold water and drain. Assembly is pretty easy, but then, I am very handy and mechanically inclined. If you are not, I recommend reading the instructions several times, looking over the pieces, and going slow.
After assembly, I plugged it in and started randomly pressing buttons. After a period of sorting out the problems I had caused, the Genie was up and running. It has been flawlessly cleaning itself for over a month now (December 22, 2007). I got the dome. The cat tracks some of the pellets out, but it is far less messy than that LitterMaid POS.
The BS about cat acclimatization is goofy. I’ve raised dozens of cats. I’ve never had one so picky about where it defecated (as long as it was relatively clean) as those described in the Cat Genie literature. I threw out the LitterMaid and the cat just sniffed the Cat Genie and climbed in to do her bidness.
I haven’t touched the Cat Genie since I installed it. I haven’t emptied litter clumps, I haven’t added litter, I haven’t done ANYTHING! It is the sweetest thing. I love it, it works great!
One of the best inventions for cat lovers. Now I can enjoy our cats without the headache of cleaning the cat litter. My home feels cleaner in general already without the bacteria being spread around nor the smell lingering. Had a bit of trouble with initial installation. Hose leaked, but called customer service department and they were very helpful and sent new hose via overnight FedEX. The only area of improvement that I can see is a way to prevent the litter from being kicked back out when the scooper is dumping. I just purchased the dome, which should help with this issue, not to mention provide the privacy that my cats have grown accustomed to. Truly a remarkable product overall. I am very happy with this product and hope that it will last for many years to come.
I’ve had cats, my whole life, & have never had anything like the CAT GENIE! I got sick & tired of scooping, cleaning, smelling, & can only guess my cats have never liked it, either! Tried the “automatic litter box” & STILL had to clean and scoop, not to mention buying heaving containers of litter! Received my CAT GENIE, easy to install, cats both watched, very curious! Scheduled the automatic cleaning, only to find the bowl didn’t rotate! Read instructions, while waiting for customer service to call back. Apparently this is a common problem, created by shipping, eventhough the box didn’t appear damaged. The bowl gets warped, but once you have customer service on the phone with you, it’s all taken care of, & you’ve taken it apart so many times, you’re now a pro at it!!!! The next day, we went away, not knowing what we’d find when we returned. No problems at all, other than no one here to flush the toilet! Guess I’ll have to teach the cats to do that! I CAN’T SAY ENOUGH ABOUT CUSTOMER SERVICE – EXCELLENT!!! The only other thing I can say, “if you have a cat, you NEED THIS CAT GENIE!
My cat loves it. Could hardly wait for the first cycle to complete before he had used it for solids. I love it as it reduces my “Honey Do” list by another item every week. It was great entertainment to watch it go through its paces for the first time. If you have the room for it, get it. It’s great.
The best thing I have ever purchased. My finicky cat is the happiest he has ever been and I dont have to clean out the litter box every week. I know its expensive, but just buy it.
Let me first start with the fact that I have six cats. Three of them have long hair. The Cat Genie says it is recommended for up to three cats. It was very easy to get the cats switched from the conventional litter box to the Cat Genie, it worked just as the instructions said it would. There have been very few accidents, and these only happen when the unit gets plugged up. I like the Cat Genie a lot, but with as many cats as I have, I have to take more care of it than someone with fewer cats. At least once a week, it plugs up. When this happens, I have to disassemble the entire thing, this is not a hard task but it can be messy. About half the back ups are due to the permanent litter getting into the drain opening and stopping things up. The other half of the time, it is hair. The literature recommends brushing your cats frequently, and they mean it!
I would make a couple of design changes if I were the manufacturer. I would put some kind of scraper at the top of the rim to scrape the permanent litter off the rim of the rotating bowl when it backs up behind the scoop. Or I would change the angle of the scoop so that the litter wouldn’t back up to the top of the bowl rim. I would also put an abort button on the unit to stop the cleaning cycle when the unit gets plugged up. Too much of the permanent litter ends up in the inner workings of the Cat Genie, which contributes to the clogs. Most of the litter than ends up inside is stuck to the scoop and gets shaken off into the solid waste hopper. Perhaps a few more shakes before the solid stuff gets dropped into the hopper. It would be nice if I could set it up to clean more than four times a day. I frequently run manual cycles to keep up with the output of my six cats. Again, the Cat Genie is very clear in its literature that it is designed for up to three cats. I am pushing the envelope with six.
I like the Cat Genie, but it needs a couple of tweaks. I am so happy not to have to clean a conventional litter box and deal with the litter and litter dust all over the house. No lingering smells either. I’m not sure how the cats feel about it, but they seem to want to use it and they are no longer afraid the the noise.
Great product well worth the expense. I hate cleaning the box. Better then a Litter Maid.
After seeing commercials and reading reviews on this cat box, I decided to go ahead and buy one. I did have some reservations based on the reviews of people who had problems with their CG, but I decided to go ahead and get one and HOPE I didn’t get a lemon.
We are a 2-cat family. Older female is 7, younger male was just shy of a year old (and not fixed).
My husband put the CG together the same evening it arrived in our half bath on the bottom floor of our apartment (which we’d just moved into) and neither cat was amused. They completely ignored it for a couple of days, after which time I removed the regular litterbox from that bathroom (it was so disgusting I couldn’t stand it anymore!). One of the cats broke down and used the CG, but they were also still using the upstairs litterbox, so I got rid of that one too.
The 7 yo female made the transition smoothly. The younger male, on the other hand was not going to humor me. I should point out that he has ALWAYS had issues with litter boxes – he absolutely detests any poop in the box and he will relieve himself outside of the box in protest. He was difficult to train for the CG, but I also think the fact that he hadn’t yet been neutered contributed to the aggression he exhibited when we tried to help him along in accepting the CG as an alternative. Once neutered, he bacame much more compliant and began using it with no intervention on our part.
As for the operation of the CG, I have had only good luck with it, with these two exceptions:
* a 2-beep error which brought the cleaning cycle to a halt and was caused by low water pressure when I ran the cleaning cycle while washing clothes.
* incomplete use of a cleaning solution cartridge – which had to be removed while it still contained about 1/4 of the cleaning solution.
I’ve had the baked cat poo experience as well. Depending on where the solids are when the cleaning cycle starts, the rake may come down and crush the poop, creating small bits that the rake cannot pick up. In all fairness, neither can I retrieve the bits with a regular scoop. Since we run the box manually, I invest a few extra moments (when there are solids present) to make sure the raked doesn’t come down on them – if it is about to, I hold the distal end of the rake up with my toe until it’s cleared the solids. Since the rake has some play to it, this does the trick. Occasionally, something happens that small bits of poo get past my vigilant eye and most times I use some tissue to pick them out and toss into the toilet. Once in a great while I will end up with baked poo and it DOES stink up the place. BUT, that is minor compared to the convenience of the CG and the freedom from a traditional litter box.
On a daily average, about 1-2 tablespoons of the granules get displaced onto the bathroom floor – mainly when the cats jump out of the box. I had the same problem with regular cat litter, so I can’t say this is exclusive to the CG. I keep a dustpan in the bathroom and sweep up the granules once a day (more often if company is coming!).
After nearly 4 months of use, I continue to be pleased with the CG. Usually I run two morning cycles per day, as the cats are a.m. poopers. We will be relocating to Colorado in the near future and once we are settled there, I plan to buy a second GC. I suspect a second litter box would alleviate some of Leo’s issues and I feel investing in a second CG for a larger home will be money well spent.
When the Cat Genie works as it should, it truly turns cats into almost no-maintenance pets. I highly recommend the Cat Genie over a traditional litter box as well as over a LitterMaid. You can’t beat the convenience of waste disposal right into the toilet as well as the freedom you gain from lugging heavy cat litter home. The granules and sani-solution are easy to store and don’t take up much real estate.
It doesn’t get much easier than this!
Wow! This product is great! I haven’t had a lick of problems with my CatGenie. I have one cat, and he has become quite fond of it. It’s a breeze to set up and the instructions are easy to follow. I installed mine in the laundry room so it would drain using the laundry drain tube. It’s perfectn for the most part. It does smell while it is scooping poop ,but, what else would you expect, so I just close the door to my laundry room, or run it at night while we’re sleeping.
Thank you CatGenie!
The only improvement that I would request is the ability to have it autorun after the cat has left the box so that the waste doesn’t sit there until it is manually run or it is run by the set time. It would be a good option.
When a friend first told me about this product, I couldn’t quite get my head around the concept. Self-washing litter? A self-sanitizing cat box? Well, seeing is believing because two minutes into watching their CatGenie work, I totally understood how cool it was and knew that I wasn’t going to be buying traditional litter any more. Now I’m not very mechanically minded and my cats are pretty picky (whose aren’t?) But the CatGenie was easy to install (I did it all in just minutes and didn’t need a plumber) and my cats took to it immediately. They love it and even after having it for months, I still get a kick out of watching it work.
Best Invention Ever. I only wish I thought of it first.
Pros:
Superior cleaning. The unit looks the same after five months as it does the day you set it up. No Litter to buy. If you have a problem, their customer support is one of the best there is. FYI: You can run this system for a few dollars less than it costs to buy litter and then have almost no work to do.
They have a 90 day test drive. Hey, try it and if you do not like you can send it back. You have nothing to lose.
Cons:
It does scatter some but so does a traditional litter box. I can’t imagine why everyone with cats does not have one of these.
I was among the first people to receive my two Catgenie litterboxes about eight months ago. This amazing litterbox has certainly been worth every penny I spent on it and more. I heard about the concept a long time before it came out and I had my pre-order placed ever since the company launched their website well over a year ago. Let me begin by saying that I could not own my four cats today without this device. With my busy work schedule, I simply do not have the time to care for them the way they fill up a traditional litterbox. I have tried many automatic litterboxes in the past such as the Littermaid (a disaster) and the Litter-Robot (another great product but still required too much maintenance).
All of my cats initially acclimated to the new boxes within hours, one of them even tried using the litterbox before it was completely set up! I placed a cardboard box over the unit because I had not finished setting it up and I didn’t want the cats to use it yet. Well, one of my little guys crawled under the box and used it anyway! Needless to say, I quickly hooked up the rest of it and ran the first cycle. I cycle both litterboxes three times per day and this seems to be enough to keep them clean. I will run an occasional manual cycle if one of my cats decides to smell up the house. The cleaning cartridges last an average of about 2.5-3 weeks when I have the Catgenies set to run on this schedule. A good amount of granules seem to get kicked out onto the floor by my cats, but I am hoping this will be fixed by the new higher walls and hood which will be released as add-ons very soon. Even with the escaping granules, the level stays rather constant and I only have had to add granules to the litterboxes every couple of months.
The biggest advantage of this litterbox is obviously the care-free maintenance. To realize how care-free it is you have to consider the following scenario: I recently moved to a new house on March 28th 2007 and set up both of my Catgenies in the laundry room of my new house. After the initial water and sewer hookups were made, I plugged them in, placed the cleaning cartridges in the special compartments, and programmed them to run 3 times per day. With the exception of replacing the cartridges twice, I have not touched either Catgenie in the past 7 weeks!! Try that with an ordinary litterbox and four cats!! I also have automatic feeders for my cats and I am completely comfortable leaving for 1-2 weeks with the Catgenies able to take care of them. In fact, I have left them to go on a couple of business trips that lasted over a week and I have returned home to happy cats and clean litterboxes. Just to keep my peace of mind, I did set up a internet webcam on the litterboxes. I was able to connect remotely and check on them every couple of days, but there was no need for my worrying because everything worked perfectly.
The Catgenie was not without its problems in the beginning, however I contacted PetNovations and they explained to me that they had some initial difficulties with the packaging and shipping of the litterboxes. They quickly overnighted new parts to remedy the problem and my two Catgenies have been working flawlessly ever since. I cannot stress enough how helpful their customer support team has been. I am confident that they will be there to support any problems I have throughout my 2-year warranty. In fact, I will be upgrading to their optional 4-year warranty because I want to ensure my litterboxes stay running for as long as possible and I know PetNovations will stand behind their products.
Bottom line… If you are tired of smelly traditional litterboxes that require too much labor, or other automatic litterboxes that do not work correctly… you need this product.
SAVE YOUR MONEY!!!
I love the concept but it just doesn’t work in practicality. The scoop misses most of the poo, so when it does drain you get poo diamonds that are hard as rocks and stink, because the heater has been cooking them.
When the drain gets clogged with hairballs…you get Poo Stew!
As a Minimal Effort(tm) product, this one has my full recommendation! I’ve had the CatGenie for about a month now. This is a very high-quality product and well worth the investment. With a little initial effort to install the CatGenie and acclimate your cat(s), you can eliminate all the usual effort, hassle, stinkyness and sanitation issues of litter boxes.
I found it very easy to set up, by myself, not being a huge do-it-yourselfer. I put it in my laundry room and just followed the instructions. The water connection leaked at first, and it appeared to be a problem with the hose itself. I called the help line, not really expecting to get much real help, but to my surprise, a real person answered, spoke my language in a dialect I could understand, was very friendly and helpful, and sent a new hose out to me immediately. I got it less than 48 hours later, and had no more problems with the installation. It was one of the best “help-desk” experiences I’ve ever had (and I’ve had MANY!)!
The CatGenie then proceeded to work exactly as advertised. It was kind of fun to watch it go through its whole cycle of scooping, washing, flushing, and drying (somewhere around 30 minutes). I only watched the whole thing once, since it does take a chunk of time, but I did watch parts of it over the first few days. It’s really quite fascinating!
My cat used it the very first day. If there is one drawback to the CatGenie, it would be that occasionally SOME of the solids produced by my cat are apparently a little smaller than the spaces in the scooping mechanism, and fall through instead of getting removed from the box. However, being small, they’re not that noticeable visually, they don’t seem to have any noticeable odor after they have endured the whole cleaning and sanitation cycle, and they don’t stay around very long. The cleaning action tends to reduce and flush them away by the second or third time.
The CatGenie cycle can be run manually any time, or can be put on a timer to run automatically. I purchased it for this reason, because I travel a lot and did not want to relegate the litter-scooping job to other people all the time (not that I particularly like it myself). I found that the CatGenie ran exactly as I would have expected, based on the advertising and information I could find about it. The timer works and the cleaning cycles run when I expect them to.
It does make a small amount of noise during its cleaning cycle (which I run only when my cat is sleeping and nowhere around), but nothing particularly loud or troublesome. It’s not as loud as, say, the dishwasher or washing machine, and doesn’t run as long. It’s nowhere near as loud as the vacuum cleaner!
The cleaning cycle ends with the granules being dried by a jet of hot air, which sends the scent of the sani-solution throughout the house. Now, the scent is really quite pleasant as artificial scents go, and I think most people would be fine with it, but I am not a person who likes scented things much, so this is less than ideal for me. It is DEFINITELY a lot better than stinky-litterbox-smell, though! If the CatGenie people are reading this, I’d suggest offering an alternative “unscented” version of the sani-solution. I’d also love it if the number of uses remaining in the cartridge could be seen somewhere on the cartridge. Since I travel so much, I would like to keep an eye on how many uses are left in case I need to put a new cartridge in before I leave on a trip. The CatGenie does beep to warn you when there are only 10 uses left, but I may not be there until several days after it starts beeping, so it would be good to see a number somewhere.
Unfortunately, my cat STOPPED using it after 4 or 5 days. I’m not exactly sure why (I have a very quirky and neurotic cat), but I am now working on a new acclimation routine for him, and looking forward to the day he is using the CatGenie full-time again.
Bottom line: In true Minimal Effort(tm) fashion, this product can eliminate the parts you hate about having a cat, and make your life with your pet much more pleasant, as it was meant to be. It is a well-designed, high-quality product, with high-quality support at the home office. Supplies are easy to find and will cost you no more than it used to cost you for cat litter. I highly recommend this as a Minimal Effort(tm) product!
I just received the Cat Genie last Friday with super-quick shipping from the manufacturer. It took a total of about 2 hours to set up and that included 2 trips to Home Depot. The first trip was to buy all new plumbing for the inside of the toilet because it would leak and keep running. We had just turned the water off to it and didn’t use it, but now it needed to run for the CatGenie. The second trip was to get the flexible line since I didn’t get that the first time and the CatGenie needs it.
Overall, about 30 minutes of the time spent was actually hooking up the CatGenie. It was very easy to do and worked just fine the first time. The cats came running from all over the house when they first heard it and they are very interested in it. My youngest kitty (1 year) who happens to love water, will stand and put his paws in the water during the wash cycle.
The only problem so far is that the cats enjoy watching it, but haven’t been using it regularly. Over the past 3 days, I’ve only found about one poop and I think they may have peed once or twice. The old litter box (just next to it) got awfully stinky, but they still went to it instead of the new machine. I broke down and changed the litter there because it smelled so bad and I didn’t want accidents on the carpet.
I’ve actually scooped a few pieces and put them in the CG, thinking they will get the idea — but I’ll have to let you know about that.
Overall, it was a breeze to set up, the customer service ordering was wonderful and the machine works like it should. The smell of the sanitizing solution is very pleasant and wafts through the downstairs when the blow-dryer comes on. Now, if the cats will stop thinking of it as TV to watch!
I have three cats, a 3-year-old and 2 8-year-olds, and a very bad back. I live alone (although my brother, not a huge cat lover, had been great about coming by to get the heavy bags of cat litter out of my trunk) and have been unable to maintain the cat boxes to anyone’s level of happiness.
Before purchasing, I did lots of Catgenie research. What a great idea! I feel that whatever shortcomings this machine has, the technology is here and will only get more advanced and any wrinkles should be ironed out in my cats’ lifetime, imagine! It seemed to me the good outweighed the bad so I took the plunge. From what I read, it seemed the biggest problems were clogs, draining and acclimation issues.
What I did was install mine in the laundry room but on a table (about 32″ high). By elevating the catgenie, the water hose has a straight across shot to the cold water line and potential clogs have less gravity to fight (I did cut a couple feet of hose, with the CG folk’s blessing). I also have a set of kitty stairs (which they’re not using now but may as they age) to the table.
My brother installed it but it was super easy. The brochures and literature that came with the CG were very clear and easy to understand. In my opinion, it’s not as loud as the washer and when it drains, sounds exactly like the washer draining. Doesn’t upset the cats at all.
Another concern I had before purchasing was the “baking poo-brownies” smell I’d read about, when small pieces of solids get missed by the scoop and went thru the blowdrying stage. Sounded awful. As my CG is elevated, I have absolutely no problem removing a quick scoop of solids the ‘old-fashioned’ way if I’m in the area. Just trying to beat the odds here. For others with bad backs and now that I think about it, I don’t know why I didn’t elevate the old boxes years ago.
My biggest problem has been getting the two older kitties acclimated. My 3 year old took to the new CG within a day or two of setting it up. Their old boxes were in the basement, not on the same floor as my laundry room. The first step was closing the kitty-door to the basement and moving a cat box to the laundry room. I placed the old box beside the table holding the catgenie, on top of my dryer. No problems, no accidents, everyone was happy. I tried to leave the old box dirty, as the CG folk suggest in the acclimation guide, but I couldn’t stand that. Once everyone was happy going in the laundry room, I made the mistake of taking away the old dirty box, this was still within one week of set-up. Some call them accidents, these were on purposes! One of the older cats was so angry with me, she pee’d on my desk. OK, back to the small regular litter box beside the CG. Next, I (correction, my strong-backed brother) began switching positions of the genie and the boxes every couple days, hoping to ‘confuse’ the cats into using the genie. The older two didn’t buy it. Ok, at least they’re all using the right room again. Next after a day or two, I got rid of the regular litter and filled the small box with the CG litter. They’re buying it, no accidents, no problems. Still switching box positions, but at least they’re now all in the right room AND used to the new litter.
I would run the cat genie (remember the youngest one loves it), then remove the clean, warm litter and pour the soiled CG litter from the small box into the genie to wash. I know, I know, sounds like a lot of work for a machine that’s supposed to do it all by itself. If you decide to wash litter this way, be sure that when you dump the dirty CG litter into the genie, you give it a few minutes to drain before hitting the clean button. I didn’t and experienced my first clog. Because the litter was really wet, the scoop came down and fed itself a whole scoop of wet litter, right into the hopper! Oops. My patience paid off though. Several days after the big switch to CG litter only, only one of my older ones was still using the old box. Time for tough love. She spent last Thursday night locked in the laundry room with only the CG. Lo and behold, she used it. I was glad, but really, what choice did she have? It was the next day, Friday, almost a week ago, that I saw her using it voluntarily and has been using it ever since. SUCCESS!! Whipped cream for everyone. Ask any animal lover, would you invest 4-5 weeks to toilet train your animal? I think the answer would be YES.
Caution now, it’s only been 6 weeks that I’ve owned it, only 5 days since all cats are using it. I still have my original packing boxes, just in case, but for now, we all are so happy. My friends are happy too that I’m now able to discuss things other than cat waste.
I’ve called CG customer service a couple times and found them (especially Selina, the angel who helped me through the clog!) exceptional. They’re on call until 11 p.m. (Eastern) and seem to be genuinely interested in helping.
Good luck. I’ll update later if I run into problems. I hope this helps.
We just love this. We have two cats in our home and have used the other type of clean sweep boxes with the trays and clumping litter. This is a lot better. I found it very easy to install although I hard piped all the plumbing…but that just me. You could hook this up just the way they tell you and it would work just fine. I was amazed at how well it works. One of our cats jumped in before I could turn on the water to the unit. This does all that it said it would and does it well. Most of all no more changing litter. That clumping stuff got all over the place and the only automatic thing was the dumping of the waste in a covered tray – but you still have do deal with that. With this unit that’s all over and done with. Very clean no more smells! Give this 11 stars and that’s one more than 10.
I will start with a little history, My fisrt wife and I had 14 found and helpless cats at once and when she was with child I had to clean the 5 boxes twice a days, our basement smelled horrific. so need less to say I don’t like indoor cat boxes period.
A friend of mine who is serving in the Army was unable to keep her cats so I gave in and picked 3 up at the airport. I was paying my son to do the litter but what a smell and it was allways full.
The CATGENIE does the job at the press of a button. It arrived and was but in place by my son (17)before I could get home from work. We have it in the laundry room.
The list of problems is short and where fixed. The first was that the discarge hose was clogged because the pipe was shareing the drain with the washer. My fault. A bigger drain now acomidates both nicely. The second is that the litter was getting all over. My (2nd) wife freeked on this. but htey do vaccum up and don’t break down like clay.
I haven’t read about this here but they have an iglu looking cover that takes care of most of the flicked pellets and keeps them contained. For the price this is the Cats Meow! and you never have to touch poo again. I will say that the smell after cleaning has changed after our second patch of cleaner.
I would be more
We just recently bought a Cat Genie after researching for a very, very long
time! I have never owned a self cleaning litter box – and decided to
finally purchase one and was concerned because I read a few negative reviews
that scared me but the positive reviews were too strong and to be honest so
was what it offered over other automatics.
Now after owning it for 6+ months I am so glad we chose the Cat Genie! This
machine is AMAZING. Nothing is perfect but it does a much better job than I
ever did and I am pretty fastidious about my house and the cat box. It
washes with water and vet approved cleanser and then dries. It is as close
to perfect as it can get. I am surprised it does not cost more! I would
recommend purchasing a dome or sidewalls- it helps keep the granules in the
box. All I can say is, I wish we purchased it sooner.
When I first saw the infomercial, I thought that this product was too good to believe. Never change a stinky, urine-soaked box again? No way!
Well, I’m here to say, yes way.
I have had the product for a few months and have had absolutely ZERO problems. I have two cats, who took to it very quickly (I followed their instructions, such as leaving the old box there without cleaning it). After a week I went out of town, and I was scared to death, because I’d heard all the horror stories: clogs that leave stinky water floating, baked pieces of poo the scooper missed…but I have had none such mishaps. I was also concerned, because I had not ran it automatically yet, and I was sure they’d see it running and potty on the floor in fear. Quite the contrary, they actually wait patiently outside of the bathroom waiting for it to finish its cycle. One of my cats also has long hair and sheds like there is no tomorrow, but I still haven’t had any clogs. Quite frankly, at this point I feel like even if it did clog once or twice, it would be worth the time I save every single day not scooping and messing around with cat filth. Set up was VERY easy, and I am not usually talented when it comes to that stuff, so don’t let the minor plumbing required be a deterrent.
The beads do scatter everywhere, even more so than litter (my guess is because they’re smaller and more lightweight). On the plus side, though, because they’re shaped and not basically little pieces of rock (like litter), they’re not so painful when you step on them. They also aren’t so obvious on your floor.
The only other drawback I can see is the price. For me, it was worth it, and it was very much a stretch of my budget, as I’m just a poor student. The time and frustration it saves me is well worth the steep initial price, and the ongoing price of cartridges.
In summary: buy buy buy! If you can afford the initial cost (the CatGenie website has a payment plan,) you won’t regret it. And even if you do regret it, they have a great return policy. Enjoy!
I’ve had this product for about 6 months now and I can’t get over how wonderful it really is. Truly well engineered and well thought out, it’s probably the most complete self cleaning cat box I’ve seen.
I was a real skeptic, but the 90 day trial convinced me. At first, the price also seemed a lot to ask as well as the proprietary cleaning solution which is required for use.
However, right now, I’m more concerned with them going out of business. I don’t want that to happen. So, here’s my positive review to help promote this product!
There is an adjustment period for cats. One of mine took on right away but the other was reluctant. I think it was the noise from the device. Take the advice of manuals and that should make things easier. Still, within two weeks, all was wonderful. The one late adopter has used her origianal box for almost 10 years. The other was a baby.
I suggest the laundry room as well as other reviews suggest.
In terms of problems, I would say the most annoying thing is the pellets getting all over the place. I solved that issue by putting down a door mat designed to deal with wet boots or snow boots and that has helped significantly. Every once in a while, it clogs, such as when the cat poop is a little soft. However, their support is AMAZING. Once you get the hang of the system, it’s really no big deal.
You do need to clean it every once in a while (4 to 6 months), but it’s really easy to do. Seriously, when you take it apart, you’re going to admire the engineering. Also, should you have problems, it seems the parts are easily replacable. Again, I haven’t had any problems.
I highly suggest it. My cats love it now and it really does a great job of cleaning. Total cost of ownership is also WAY lower than traditional cat litter that I did for nearly 10 years.
I hope they do well. They’ve really put together a good product!
I feel that the Cat Genie is the most amazing cat box ever created. I have tried so many different cat litter systems and this one got it right! I read the reviews here when I came to check out supply prices (by the way, Amazon’s prices are really good) and when I saw some of the reviews, I felt that I had to help set the record straight.
I had the same problem that several people mentioned in their reviews (clogging or poor draining). I was also angry when I called in to the customer support line. What I found was one of the best customer service departments I have ever encountered. They listened patiently while I ranted about my problems. They then asked some questions and gave me their explanation about what was going on. It seems that a small number of users were experiencing issues with the unit having problems primarily with hard and small poops. They explained that they were testing a new impellor and asked if I would like to try it and see if it solved my problem. It was very easy to switch–only took a couple of minutes to do. Anyhow, it worked! I’ve continued to use the product for the past 3 months and have had no other problems at all. They sent me an email about a month ago telling me that all the people who had tested the new part were extremely pleased and that now every unit has this new impellor in it. So, if this has been your problem, call them and get the new impellor.
I am SO pleased with my Cat Genie now. I no longer have to buy those heavy jugs of litter. I don’t have dust all over my house and gone is that awful litter box smell. Best of all, I don’t have to scoop and empty that icky stuff anymore. As a long time cat owner, this is the best thing ever!!!!
I wish that everyone who loves cats could try the Cat Genie. I have convinced 2 friends to buy it, they both love it. My husband was dead-set against buying this, but after the first hour of ownership even he is very pleased. The Cat Genie was super easy to install and our cat jumped right in 5 minutes after we hooked it up. I heard that customer support is great, we have owned the Cat Genie for 9 months with no problems so we’ve never had to call.
I read up on Cat Genie, checked out every review I could find, I was not eager to spend $300 on another bad cat box solution. I could have bought 2 cat genies for what I have paid in Littermaid boxes that broke and all the stupid containers and the nasty memories of trying to empty those stupid containers and that filthy rake was the worst. I would never go back to that. The washable granules are great in the Cat Genie and I do have to add a little once every six to eight weeks. My favorite thing is my cat always has a fresh clean litterbox and I don’t have to do the scrubbing every week like I had to with the Littermaid. It is also very nice not having to buy special cat litter and hauling it in and back out after. We spent a fortune in litter and special deodorizing powder that really did not work. The Cat Genie solved all the worst things about the litterbox issue for us.
I would buy the Cat Genie again and again .If you let your cat out because you do not want to deal with a a litterbox, I wish you would consider a Cat Genie. I have seen so many cats that are let outside get killed or injured. My moms cat was attacked by a wild animal and cost her a fortune in Vet bills.
This is an excellent cat box! We want to get another one because we have um…lots of cats I rescued. It is as great as all the reviews say and more. I know I skimmed through tons of reviews. The only con is the washable granules are lightweight and track on their piddy-paws and a few get kicked out by the machine when it’s cleaning. Car Genie might need to get a heavier weight washable granule to alleviate this problem… But, all-in-all, it is fantastic not to have to change litter and this Cat Genie is very nice!!! A flushing cat toilet- wish we had invented that!!!
We love this machine!!! We have three cats and travel frequently for work. With the cat genie, we know the kitties always have a fresh bowl. We did a quick economic analysis and decided the initial expense would pay for itself in just over a year at the rate the cats were going through litter.
The cats were under a year old when we got the machine and they took to it when we placed one of their own droppings in the cat-genie bowl. In all it only took two days for all three to use the machine. No more fussing at the teenagers for not cleaning the box thoroughly enough (was one of their chores).
We have had a couple of instances where the cats drug in a string or a large piece of fuzz and clogged up the machine. After getting customer support on the phone (and they were fantastic) we walked through the machine step by step until the thing was working again. We keep a litter box and some litter on hand for the kitty sitter just in case the machine has problems while we are out.
The extent of litter duty now includes looking at the machine about once a day to ensure the light is still on. About ever other week we add just a few grannuals to the bowl to ensure the kitties have enough to scratch around. We absolutely love this machine and are encouraging our family to get the same. Hope you enjoy yours.
We read hundreds of reviews of the Cat Genie on a handful of different websites before we decided to take a chance and buy one. We were prepared to deal with any of the problems we’d read about others having – but two months into using the Cat Genie, I’m pleased to report that we’ve had NO problems. The installation went smoothly. The unit functions just like it’s supposed to. Our cats transitioned to using it exclusively within about a week, and we got rid of our old litter box. The cleaning solution, when we notice it all, has a mild, pleasant smell. I have become a walking Cat Genie commercial – I tell all my friends about it. If you’re reading this and considering buying one, I HIGHLY recommend it. If you hate dealing with a litter box – this is the way to go.
Week 1 – 5 stars
I have owned the Catgenie now for 2 weeks and it has worked flawlessly with proper set up. I own two large breed cats, Siberians, and they took to it immediately. I placed a small piece of poo from their old cat box in the catgenie so that they would associate it with where they are supposed to go. I also located the catgenie in ths same place that their old cat box was. I did not leave the old one anywhere in sight.
I have seen some negative comments in other reviews and I have to believe that the majority are due to improper set up or failure to follow operating instructions.
When you get your Catgenie you must read all of the directions and pay particular attention to the drain hose and how you place it. You are given a generous length of this hose and the excess has to be placed properly for the device to work. 10ft of hose is more than enough for my set up in the laundry room and in fact a little too much. I will probably shorten it to reduce the number of excess coils and reduce the resistance to water flow, but haven’t needed to yet. I have the excess coiled vertically in two wide loops held with zip ties rather than coiling under the unit. I have had no problems with clogs. Also the “j” end of the hose must not be pinched at all.
The second potential for problems is having too much litter in the bowl. When they say only fill to the line, that’s all you need, remember you are only satisfying your cat’s instinct to dig and bury.
Cats urinate more than anything and if you are used to clumnping litter the benefit of washing and cleaning will be immediately evident when you use the catgenie.
I have also heard some people complain of small bits of cat poo remaining in the bowl as the sifting hand has pretty wide gaps. I have encountered this once. My cats have pretty solid bowl movements that scoop up just fine with the catgenie. My cats are on a diet of high quality dry food only. I keep my cat litter shovel handy in the event that I do see a small piece and I just pick that piece out and throw into the hopper.
I have not had the experience of smelling baked cat poo on the dry cycle.
My two cats use the catgenie several times a day and I have it set to run 3 times while they are sleeping. This is important when you first get it, don’t run it while your cats are awake. First, you may spook them and associate the catgenie as something to avoid, second, your cat may have to go while it is running, so wait until your cats are asleep.
The other complaint that I hear is the smell of the sanisolution. This must be a matter of personal preference. It does not smell unpleasant but it wouldn’t be the choice scent airfreshner I would use. My wife on the other hand loves the way it makes the laundry room smell. I would compare it to a high end santizer that you may smell in a public restroom, without the stink of urine or feces.
Lastly, some people are complaining about the litter getting everywhere. Well, regular cat litter has that problem too. I have a kitty mat in front of mine that helps get it off the cats paws and I am willing to sweep a little cat litter off the floor if it means I don’t have to do the dirty deed of sifting soiled cat litter anymore. I think it is a minor problem. I have the extended sides and dome, so what does come out is due to the cats’ vigorous digging and not a malfunction of the machine.
On a final note, I think it is important that you do brush your cat and do give them hairball medicine to help with their elimination. Cat poo should not be hard. Some poeple have complained that the machine gets clogged or stuck because of this. I don’t have this problem. Also, when I see feces in the bowl, I run a cycle so that it does not dry out.
This isn’t a 100% set and forget product, but you will not have to carry heavy cat litter boxes or scoop dusty and nasty litter. Your cat’s paws will be cleaner because you are washing their potty area frequently. I freak out a little less when the cat hops on the counter now. If you see poop, run the cycle. I mean, don’t you flush after you go? Just because it has automatic cycles doesn’t mean you should let the unit fill up before cycling. Even if at the end of the day mine looks relatively clean, I run it again to flush out the system. It is only a button push.
Even if I had to just scoop the poop and let the genie handle the urine, I have already saved myself two thirds of the work with having to manage a litter box. But again, I have not had a problem.
I will check back in in another two weeks to report on the continued operation and how the auto set times are working out.
I love this product as it saves me from doing a nasty chore, keeps my cats clean, and provides for automatic handling while I am away.
————-Week 3 – 5 Stars ————————-
Well, it is the end of my third week using this product. I still have not had to change a cartridge and the machine is still performing as promised. My two large breed, long hair, siberians have fully adapted to it.
The machine itself has not had any issues. Not a single error beep or false start. I will, however, admit that on one occassion that a small piece of cat feces did not make it into macerator compartment and was washed and baked by the heater. It is a terrible smell when this happens. I still love the convenience of not having to scoop or carry litter. I keep my old litter sifter nearby and if I happen to see any cat feces left behind that didn’t make it, I give it the old manual scoop and help it along. Still, a small price to pay for all of the work I am saving.
No clogs and no malfunctions to report. Maybe there is a surprise waiting for me when I do the first semi-annual recommended cleaning? I will let you know.
I will check back in in another 3-4 weeks with updates. I fully recommend this product.
————–7-12-2008 Update————-
My machine hit a major milestone in that I have finally cycled thru a complete sanisolution cartridge. It was completely empty when the machined indicated replacement was needed. So, for now, I refute any claims that I have seen in other reviews that excess and unused sanisoulution is wasted or unused by inefficient indicators. Maybe my second cartridge will be different and if it is, I will report it.
On another note, I have noticed that my machine is making a slightly different sound with going thru its cycle. I took a flashlight and looked down the hopper and was able to see some accumulation of cat hair around the impeller. This hair is whipping against the inside wall making the sound. Operation is not affected, but I can see that even with brushing and hairball remedy that I will have to follow directions and eventually open the unit for its semi annual cleaning. With my long hair cats, I had already decided that I would do this on a quarterly or three times a year basis. Like any machine, this one will require maintenance. I will report how that goes when I finally crack open the processing unit.
I had pondered purchasing a CatGenie for some time before I finally bit the bullet and ordered one from the manufacturer’s website. I ordered the unit that came with the dome because my cats have been known to stand outside of the box and scoop litter/granules onto the floor. With the cover, they scoop it directly onto a tray I placed there, so it catches everything and I can just add the granules right back into the machine. Now onto the review:
Pros:
-really easy to use – just hit a button and walk away, then flush the toilet when it’s done (we don’t have a laundry room)
-the online owner’s manual gives really great troubleshooting tips (more on errors in the cons)
-my cats used it right away after I took away their old litter box (the acclimation tips didn’t work for them – I have strange cats)
-NO MORE LITTER!!!! Even when the cats’ litter box was clean, there would be a stink in my apartment. Now there’s just the aroma of the cleaning solution – that makes the price tag more than worth it to me
-my cats seem happier now that they have a super clean toilet twice every day
Cons:
-the price tag – while I will concede that it is rather spendy, it’s worth every penny…we saved up for a couple months and bought it straight out (no financing plan or credit)
-the error beeps are really really brash and annoying, but how else are you going to know that it’s not working? I get around having the poopy water problem that others have written about by running it when I know I’ll be around for the 15-minute rinse/dump cycle. I haven’t tried this for a vacation yet, so I can’t comment on how the timer cycle works. Also, as I mentioned earlier, there’s not really a guessing game to find out what’s wrong with it in the event of an error – the owner’s manual details what to do when there’s one beep, two beeps, etc. I’ve owned it for just over a month and have only encountered an error twice.
-granules getting tracked through my apartment and flushed down the toilet…it’s better than litter, though, and instead of having to replenish a whole litter box worth, you just need to replenish up to the fill line (I just empty the tray back into the machine and gather up the escapees that make it onto the bathroom tile floor)
Basically, I don’t know how anyone could use a regular litter box after using this unit. I’ll never go back!
No more fights about who’s going to clean the litter box. It does it itself. We love it. The cats love it. Easy to set up. Easy to maintain.
The only thing I don’t like is the smell of the cleaning solution. I think I’ll get up and set it to clean at 2 or 3 am and then not worry about it anymore.
I saw the CatGenie self-flushing cat box in February 2006 when my wife was photographing it. I loved the idea. I said we have to have this. We have 2 cats, 2 kids and 2 jobs. We got one. I had to see all the pieces so I took it apart and was impressed by the engineering. Setup was simple and our cats were quick to adapt. The younger guy was a little slow but that’s his nature. We had an early version of the CatGenie and it developed a minor problem after a couple of months. We called the company. They sent a new “brain” to us the next day. The CatGenie has worked perfectly ever since. This self-washing concept with it’s never-toss cat granules make all the sense in the world. It’s super. 5 stars

What do you say about a litterbox that guests stand and watch go through the entire 18 minute cleaning cycle? Not only does this product work but it is fascinating to watch. This is a well-thought-out and executed product. I’ve used other automated litter boxes before and had always been disappointed with design or operational issues. The CatGenie has none of those problems. My cats have never had such a consistently clean litter box. This has eliminated all of the distasteful work associated with taking care of an indoor cat. With 3 cats, it seemed as it the litter box always needed cleaning. That work is done for me now. My house smells fresh and there are no bags of disgusting dirty potentially disease-carrying litter in my trash can. It has also eliminated the problem with my pickiest cat finding his own spot to relieve himself when the box didn’t meet his standards.
I’ve set it up in my laundry room in the same location as my previous litterbox. While there is some noise during the cleaning cycle, it is not as loud as the washing machine and causes no disruption. The CatGenie does require a GFI electrical outlet which makes perfect sense since it is an electrical appliance which utilizes water. If you are putting this into a bathroom or laundry room chances are that you already have (or should look into getting) a GFI electrical outlet It was simple to set up, taking only a few minutes using the provided water value and my existing water hook up and washing machine drain pipe.
My cats had no problem adjusting to it. I followed the advice in the product’s guide and just left their old litter box nearby and stopped cleaning it. After a few days, they decided on their own to abandon the old box and go to the new.
This has eliminated one of the biggest problems that we encountered whenever we traveled. It has always been easy to find someone to come feed three cats but cleaning the litter box really cut down on the pool of available cat sitters.
All in all, CatGenie gets both thumbs up from me as improving both my and my cats quality of life.
This is by far the best self-cleaning litter box out there! There is an adjustment period, but once the kitties get over it, it is the most incredible product I’ve ever purchased! I have 3 cats and run it 4 times a day. I haven’t had any clogging issues. Customer service is so helpful and nice. I’ve had 2 minor issues and they ship replacement parts practically overnight! I often leave for short trips and I’m so happy to come home to a fresh smelling home. I can’t imagine having to go back to old litter boxes. This is a great product and anyone who says otherwise must not be using it correctly!
I just received my Cat Genie three days ago, and I already love it! I have two cats that are 5 and 6 years old. The younger one took to it immediately and, let me tell you, there is nothing comparable to not having to scoop poop! My other cat hasn’t used it yet but is very curious. He smells it every time he needs to go and then goes in his old box. But it’s only been set up for two days, so I am still optimistic. And I love the sanitizing solution. It makes my whole house smell clean. So not only have I gotten rid of the smelly, dusty clay litter, but my house smells even cleaner without any effort from me! I have had none of the problems that were reported in earlier reviews, but it sounds like those were solved by the company already. I highly recommend this product if you never want to scoop poop again!
I bought this before we got a new kitten (our old family cat had passed away). I set the thing up in under an hour by myself (I am a girly girl – didn’t know a thing about plumbing…my father in law is tickled that I did this myself). I showed it to the kitten first thing when he came to live with us. He did number 1 within hours in it, and number 2 within a day. He uses it no problem. Not one thing has gone wrong with this product. Nothing. No clogging. Nothing. It has run perfectly and we love it. I have a high kicker so there are little beads on the floor but there would be with regular litter too.
I have one cat and absolute hate changing the cat litter and the scooping part is even worse. So I figured what the heck let’s give this a try. I love it! I hooked it up to the drain for my washing machine so I never see the waste. I also use the manual run cycle because sometimes it would run and there was nothing inside of it. If you have a cat then this is definately worth the money. In about 7 months I’ve gone through 2 boxes of granules and 3 of the solution. So it’s really not that bad. The only negative is that the granules get all over the floor either from the cat getting them on her paws or when it runs the scoop kinda tosses some over the side. I bought the hood for this and that helps somewhat but I still gotta sweep up the floor every couple days. I highly recommend this to everyone!
I have literally spent hundreds of dollars on OTHER self cleaning litter boxes, from Omega Paw, where you have to manually flip the litter box over, to Litter Maid and PetMate where BOTH broke before one year of ownership. Not to mention that I had to constantly have to deal with cleaning the rakes of both this automatic litter boxes and take out the smelly waste.
Cat Genie has been THE best self-cleaning litter box ever! You never have to deal with taking out the waste. I have it set to automatically clean three times a day, and I never have to worry about cleaning a dirty cat box.
Just like with anything there are some downfalls like:
– the little litter pellets gets everywhere – These can easily sweep it up
– the smell while it cleans is not that fantastic – Although it is a whole lot better than a smelly cat box
– and you do have to do a thorough cleaning of the whole litter box once every six months to prevent clogging – big WOW once every six months ?!?! , that’s not hard at all!
TO me, these downfalls are so minuscule compared to other litter boxes. I will never go back to another kind of litter box again, Cat Genie is the ABSOLUTE best investment I have ever made for my cats and for my convenience. It is truly is a worry free way to have a clean litter box, every single day!
When I first got this I had researched it online and I had previously had a Littermaid cat box. So, I had previous experience with being disappointed that I still had so much work to do to keep it running and kepping up with my three cats. When I first set up the Cat Genie it took a while to make sure that it was level and that the basket would spin freely, but after the first night, it worked without a flaw. One of my cat’s used it the first night and had no problem with the noise it makes. It isn’t any louder than my old self-cleaning litter box. By the second day all three cats were using it and by the end of the first week I put it on auto for two times per day. That keeps it clean and there isn’t the work involved in cleaning up bits that the rake leaves in my old box. That said, there are a few negatives; first, there are small bits of solid waste that slip through the hand and remain after the cycle is over. They are very few and no problem to clean up once a week. Second, the litter does get used up faster than I had anticipated due to being pushed up under the rim of the spinning basket and lost down the drain. If they can come up with a way to stop that problem I think that there isn’t a more ideal litterbox on the market today. I have reduced my cleanup time by about 95% and the laundry room is always fresh smelling. The other box started to smell after a few days and I had to take it apart and clean it every couple of months in order to keep it working at all. I plan to get the sidewalls as my cats scatter the litter over the floor in their enthusiasm, but not very badly. I am very happy with this product.
great product…easy to install. we have 3 cats, so we cycle it 3x daily. no litter odor, but the granules do track like litter, so have extra on hand to top off occasionally. the cleaning cycle has a clean fresh smell. it is a little noisy during cleaning, but it doesn’t bother us…the benefits outweigh any negative. and no more buying and hauling 15 lb containers of clay litter:)
I did a lot of research before I made the investment. Going so far as to develop a Pro’s and Con’s Matrix, and Break even point analysis! I wanted to be prepared when I brought the idea to my wife. Additionally, I am very particular when I make a purchase such as this. There are many ways to accomplish the the same tasks this unit was made for.
My environment consists of two cats less than 2 years old.
Monetarily speaking, I found that the Cat Genie will pay for itself in my home in approximately 4 3/4 years compared to a standard litter box, and 4 years compared to a leading automatic litter box. This includes all supplies, and the units themselves.
The Cat Genie has been in our home for a bit over two months now, and we have been very impressed with its performance. We seemed to have a glitch when the unit first arrived, but one quick call to Customer Service, and the problem was solved. It’s made waste removal as simple as flushing the toilet.
Overall, I would highly recommend this product to cat owners that would like to simplify their lives. Imagine, no cat waste or litter to deal with, extremely low maintenance, and stellar customer service. Not to mention overall cheaper in the long run than a regular litter box!
I have been looking at this product online for quite a while, years even. I rewatched the website’s video instructions and YouTube reviews over and over and finally broke down and bought it. It’s amazing. It was so easy to set up once it was unpacked. I put it all together, hooked up the water supply, plugged it in and poured in the granules. Ta da! All done in probably less than 10 minutes. (I have an extra water supply in my basement, so I didn’t even need to use the included adaptor, but even if I’d had to use that, it would have only added a minute to the installation time.) I moved the regular litter boxes next to it and one of the cats took to it right away, but the other two used the old box until it was one big disgusting mess and finally moved to the clean Cat Genie. I was running it manually at first but now am on a regular cycle. I poke my head downstairs to make sure I don’t hear the cartridge beep but that’s it. It takes care of itself and I no longer have to scoop, strain or dispose of cat crap. If you’ve got the space, I’d recommend this product in a second!
I purchased my unit in February ‘08 and installed it sometime in March (I had non-standard plumbing and this slowed the works slightly.) From reading other reviews, I would say I have the version with the most common bugs worked out, and I have had virtually NO mechanical problems with the unit so far (4 months or so). It seems like longer than that since I last had to deal with lugging litter around and cleaning the vile box. I love my Cat Genie.
Good points:
-It does what they say it does. What a Godsend for the basically lazy.
-A person entering my home will not be immediately informed by their nose, that cats are within.
-My cats adapted to it nearly instantly and really appreciate the clean litter box.
-So far, no mechanical problems.
-No “baked poo” problems as reported by others.
-A vast improvement over doing it by hand.
Not quite so good points but entirely liveable…
-I hate “perfumes” etc so I ordered the “unscented Sani-solution”, it still has more smell than I like, but I can live with it.
-The litter does track petty badly. However it is really quite innocuous, and I have the mats and cover which keep this down to a managable level. I cannot imagine using it with an enthusiastic “kicker” of litter unless I had all of the accessories.
-Haven’t tought my cats to flush, but this was true of the old system where they simply used the toilet directly…MOST of the time. They are far more reliable with the Cat Genie. Besides they are getting older.
We’ve had the Cat Genie for over a year. We have 2 cats. My wife wants to get another cat because the Cat Genie makes living with cats a pleasure. The concept is smart, it works as advertised, and we haven’t had any problems with this amazing machine. One of the best purchases we ever made.
I cannot imagine anyone not loving this product. It works perfectly, every single time. I started it on the first day with the automatic timer running twice a day. I didn’t like the smell that lingered for about 10 minutes after the drying cycle, so I scheduled it to run while I am at work and also during the middle of the night. It’s relatively quiet, amazingly clean, and as an added bonus, it’s cheap entertainment for my three cats.
I have a big Maine Coon, a finicky Siamese, and a rambunctious Himalayan kitten who likes to fling the litter everywhere. Buying the sidewalls, dome cover and floor mats solved that problem. Even with two long-haired cats, I have had no problems with hair clogs.
The few negative things that other people have said about the customer service does not reflect my experience. The service I got was polite, helpful and appreciative of my business.
Bottom line: If my CatGenie exploded tomorrow, I would buy another one before nightfall. I can’t say enough good things about this amazing product. If you hate scooping litter, value an odor-free home, and adore your kitties, then you should buy this machine. It’s safe, convenient, sanitary, and a LOT cheaper than using traditional methods, especially when you consider the value of your time. It doesn’t use very much water or electricity and if you buy the cartridges in bulk directly from the company, the cost is very reasonable. I estimate my CatGenie will pay for itself after about 18 months. My roommate and boyfriend both agree that it paid for itself the instant it cleared up the odor of cat urine in our home.
I love my Cat Genie & view this purchase as a fabulous decision:) Like many others who have left reviews, I too had gone the LitterMaid route in the past. Gross- the stench was still there, clumps would get stuck in the raking device, frequent malfunctions would occur with the sweeping part of the item endlessly cycling back and forth over the litter pan… I detest cleaning the litter box to begin with & that product added far more pain than gain. Procrastination/ avoidance + a litter box for 3 cats = a visual and olfactory nightmare.
In contrast, my Cat Genie has been almost maintenance free. Set-up proved challenging as a connecting fixture was “leaky.” But that problem was resolved by customer service sending a replacement piece ASAP. Now all I have to do to clean the litter box is flush the toilet and change the cartridge on a monthly basis. My cats adjusted to the Genie without any hassles. This is a great product that really makes life easier.
My husband and I purchased this machine 2 months ago for our three cats. We have been amazed at how much better our home smells. At best, we had been used to the smell of clean litter. Now we just smell clean, similar to a dryer sheet. When the unit clicks on at night, all three of our cats run to watch it clean itself. A truly amazing product. If only more things could be this simple.
Love, Love, LOVE the Cat Genie! My 15, 10, and 8 year old cats didn’t have any problems learning to use it (actually one of them had accidents around the house, but I think that’s because we changed to a food he didn’t like at the same time and he was mad). Not having to change litter any more is so wonderful! Yes, the granules do track EVERYWHERE, but I just bought the new sides, so hopefull that combined with a mat in front will solve that problem. It really does work as good as it says!
I’ve recently purchased this unit a couple of weeks ago, this is my first automatic self-cleaning box I ever bought and I can tell you I made the right choice. I’m very pleased with the unit, set-up was almost as easy as they claim. Few hiccups on my part, but once I took care of them it’s been running flawlessly ever since.
My cats are taking to it, but slower than I would like. My one cat uses it staring at the scooper to make sure it doesn’t attack her. My other cat have yet to see her use it, but haven’t found any presents around the house until yesterday. Guess she needed to go real bad and she came as it was cleaning itself. That is the problem I see, not being able to set it on a real time clock without having it run so frequently. If it scooped after each use, instead of cleaning, then you’d be able to run it once a day and my cats would take ot it with confidence.
I didn’t follow the directions as introducing to the unit by the letter, because I was so tired of scooping poop…. It works, a hood as others as suggested, maybe a deeper bowl an actual clock to where you can set it would be great.
So you’ll have to adjust your cats feeding times to adjust the cleaning to hopefully take place when the cats are less active. Pricey, but I love it and hopefully some more time my cats will love it and not so afraid to use it. Because I seen what damages they did in the litter box, and that was the reason I wanted something like this.
No more touching, smelling or scooping cat litter is a wonderful feeling. I say follow the directions when introducing them to the unit and your cats should take to it. Old litter box is outside and I have no interest in retuning it back into this household. We’re going away for a few days with the confidence that CatGenie will continue to run without any problems as we’ve seen it do the past couple of weeks.
I say go for it, if this is your first time buying any automatic self cleaning litter box, this is the one to get.
This is the best thing since sliced bread!! I should have purchased this a long time ago. Once you get it setup and working all you do is push a button and wala! Customer service for this company is top-notch. One of the hoses wasn’t working properly and they sent a new one off immediately- no questions asked. Since then the machine has been working like a gem. I completely recommend this to anyone who is tired of scooping up cat poop day after day. I have two cats and they both used it right away. I LOVE the cat genie!!!
A problem I had with my CatGenie actually improved my cat’s health. Lucky (cat) eliminated soft feces. In the old litter box, it was next to impossible to remove the bits and pieces. I bought a CatGenie, which I love. The house always smelled clean. Then one day I smelled a really bad odor. I called the CatGenie service people. When I described the smell, the nice lady (Salina?) asked about my cat’s feces. Yes, Lucky did pass loose, small ones. She explained that sometimes little bits could slip through the Genie Hand no matter how many times it scoops through the granules. She sent me a CatGenie newsletter about soft feces, written by a veterinarian who is expert on the subject. I changed Lucky’s diet and no more loose stools. He has perked up, lost weight, and he has normal bowel movements. CatGenie works perfectly. I would recommend it to any cat person who hates the litter box. And get that newsletter if your cat has soft ones.
My husband and I are pleased and amazed at the way this cat box works.
We are happy that we got this product. We have three cats. I would like to see the bowl a little wider for large cats. We have a 19 lb cat that has a bit of trouble because the sides slope and he is a long cat besides being a big cat. Still having trouble with him using it over the litter box, but two out of 3 cats using it, helps.
My cats took right to it although they are both very young, just over a year old, i put it right next to their old litter box and just didnt clean it they started using the CatGenie and i put the old one in the trash. The only “problem” with this thing is that it is HUGE, i mean i knew it was gonna be bigger than any other cat box I’ve had but this thing is about the same size as my toilet just lower to the ground I wish i had a bigger laundry room for it but unfortinately i have a tiny laundry room so it had to go in my bathroom. It is completely automatic and you can time it to go at certain times, sorta, you have to be there the first time you want to program it to that time.
Now as far as sticker shock, well hmm dont think of this as an investment that will equal out over time because well it wont. But its not any more expensive than your average litter box once you buy the main unit. So think of it as an investment by saving your time and not having to mess with cat crap…
love the CatGenie! I have 2 cats… within hours they were both using it. Installation was a breeze.
I have not seen my cat’s doody in over a year….that alone is why I think this is the best invention ever. No more scooping, litter, stinky smells. I’m not sure why people say it stinks because I only smell the cleaning solution when it cleans. The customer service, like others have mentioned, is incredible. We got the dome attachment, which I was skeptical of at first, since many say that cats don’t like doing their business in such tight quarters. But as soon as we put it on top of the unit, my cat walked right in and relieved herself….so I guess that means she likes it! (Or at least isn’t fighting it.) I’m VERY happy with my purchase!
I love the product, unfortunately this is the second one we have bought because the 1st one stopped working. But it is an essential appliance in our house.
Although I have 17 dogs, there is also a soft spot in my heart for cats. Recently I obtained two orphaned kitties from a local pet shelter. I brought them home and incorporated them into my lively menagerie. I thought all was well until one day my new cats approached me.
“Smith . . .I mean, Dad . . .” began Meowser, while Purrball looked awkwardly at the floor, “Purrball and I noticed that you don’t use the litter box like we do.”
“Well, yes, son,” I responded. “As a strapping human specimen, I choose to use an indoor-plumbing equipped device known as a ‘toilet’. The toilet allows me to create quite the splash when I do my business, if you know what I mean!”
Both cats just looked at me, confused, and I realized they did not know what a toilet was.
“You know, because there is water in the toilet and when I do my business I make it splash?”
The cats continued to look confused.
I was already so frustrated that I wanted to make spaghetti with cat balls for dinner, so I decided to just buy them a Cat Genie and tell them it was a real human toilet. Now I need to figure out how to convince my elderly father that it’s not, because this thing is not equipped to handle manly output.
I have to say I was a little skeptical at first about getting a CatGenie, but after I did, I don’t know how I lived without it!! I never have to scoop litter again
I had purchased the first cat genie and it took me a while to decide to set it up, which I finally did in July 2009. Almost immediately, I began having problems with it. It worked for about a week, and then for the next three days, I had recurring problems even though I was following the instructions including cleaning the machine twice. The machine continued beeping three times even after it was cleaned and had run through the cycle. There were no blockages and the black knob for the black thing (you would think I would remember after having read the instructions so many times) that turns in the bottom turned freely in both directions.
I also had a problem where there was water in the bowl and all four green lights at the top were lit. It was very frustrating because my cats didn’t have a place to go to the toilet and they were starting to become scared of the machine again. It took more than two weeks and a very filthy litterbox before they even began using the Genie, and I was afraid they’d start going in other places if the problem wasn’t corrected soon.
Unfortunately, I first called customer support repeatedly, including three times in one day (if you’ve ever smelled baking cat feces or had to clean that unbelievably disgusting muck out of the bottom of the cat genie which caused me to retch every time I had to do it, you’ll know how desperate I was), and didn’t receive any response from those messages, nor from email messages. The cat genie eventually ceased to work at all; all four lights 1-4 were lit on the top of the machine but I could not cancel the auto setup. I also could not run a cleaning cycle because the button didn’t work when I pressed and released it. I tried several times to press the buttons or press and release the buttons and they didn’t work. When I finally got someone from customer service to return my calls, I had to go through a hassle to convince them I owned the cat genie and had purchased it within the valid warranty period. They send me a new processor and that one seemed to work okay, but I think the cat genie just really doesn’t handle solid waste all that well, even though both of my cats are short haired and I brush them both regularly.
Now, I am once again having issues with the cat genie, but this time it is the 120 Cat Genie which I purchased in September 2009 from Amazon.com. Briefly, the cat genie now beeps once every time a cycle goes through, even if the cycle has gone through successfully – or it beeps during the cycle and when I try to restart it after following all of the steps, it will begin beeping again mid-cycle even though there is no issue with clogs. I have had to clean the genie now every day after a cycle for more than a week, and there is nothing visibly wrong with the machine. It has been thoroughly cleaned each time and reassembled, and this is getting very annoying.
