I have a very messy kitty whose favorite hobby was kicking almost all the litter out of his box after he was done. I was cleaning litter off the floor at least three times a day. Ever since I set the Booda Clean Step up a week ago, there hasn’t been one speck of litter on the floor. I am very impressed with the product!
This litterbox is fantastic! We have a 20 pound cat who is so tall he can grab stuff from 4″ in off of our kitchen counter. Normal covered boxes barely fit his head, much less his entire body. He can get into this box no problem. On top of that, the steps catch a ton of litter which would otherwise wind up on our floor! I highly recommend this box.
I really like this product. I use it in combination with the Litter Locker to keep my bathroom smelling good, and to keep litter off of the floor. The amount of litter tracked through my house went from 60 to zero. There is a little bit of effort in that whenever I clean out the bin, I vacuum the ramp, but it is much easier than vacuuming the whole house. I have heard that a few of the more timid cats are afraid of going in, and I have also heard of cats urinating on the ramp. I think that maybe their owners are not vacuuming the ramp, thus the cat thinks that the accumulated cat litter is part of the rest to go in, because I have not had that problem. Also, purchase replacement filter cartridges, because they make a huge difference in odor control.
This litter box is not a miracle by any means but I like it better than any other one I’ve tried. I have three cats, ranging in size from 9 to 15 lbs and they all use this box without any problems. I’ve noticed that some of the major complaints about this product are: 1) cats not using the stair to ascend/descend, 2) the lid coming off, 3) difficulty cleaning and 4) size. My personal experience with the product has not been so negative.
1) My cats utilize the steps and, as a result, I have witnessed a great reduction in litter scatter. This is something that varies from animal to animal so I guess I lucked out. (I used to have litter-catching mats in front of the litter boxes and the cats would jump right over those; I think they were trying to avoid the abrasive surface. As soon as I replaced the mats with carpet scraps, the cats stopped flinging themselves out. Maybe some cats jump out of the Booda because the stairs are textured with small bumps that potentially cause pain? If so, you can try to shave them off with a utility blade or sand them down, though I’m not positive how effective such a strategy would be.)
2) Instead of relying on plastic hinges (that usually break very quickly), the bottom of the lid is fashioned into a deep groove that fits over the sides of the box. After I replace the lid, I always feel around the perimeter of the box to make sure I have a snug fit. This has been enough to hold the litter box together in my household.
3) I also do not have very many problems cleaning this litter box. I simply tilt the scoop sideways and use its front edge to scrape around the perimeter and move the clumps to the center before I scoop them out.
4) As for size…the litter box is indeed big and isn’t an efficient way to use space, but I have it positioned in the corner of the living room that is dedicated solely to the cats and it definitely doesn’t feel bulky there. Plus, it’s more attractive than any other box I’ve seen and that’s good because I don’t have anywhere to hide it.
Overall, this litter box works well for me so it’s getting 5 stars.
The carbon filter handles the smell very well and the “stairs” that kitty must descend to exit the box get the majority of the litter out of her paws. I have small litter mat in front (which my kitty has to walk on since there is only one entrance and exit) that seems to catch the minimal amount of litter (if there is any) still left in her paws.
This is by far the best litter box we have owned…and we have owned quite a few. There are a few things I have noticed other consumers complaining about: the liners ripping, the smell, cats not using the ramp and so on and so forth.
But here’s a few things that are just common sense when you own a cat. If you cat has any of its claws, the liner will rip. Its a cat litter box…it will stink at some point or another, just clean it. If your cat doesn’t use the ramp but the box still works, does it really make it a product flaw? And obviously, one box for every one cat.
The design is pleasing to eye however not easy to hide, easy to clean…if you pay attention and absolutely cuts down the dispersment of litter. I have never experienced an odor problem personally, but then again I did not purchase this litter box to somehow escape the chore of scooping poo.
My advice is(because owners are just as picky about litter boxes as their feline counter-parts) it doesn’t hurt to explore options as we have and we could not be happier with our find.
I’ve read all these reviews, and I’m mostly appalled by people with more than one cat and only one box who seem to think that cleaning a litter box daily is unacceptable! What kind of cat parents are you?! Did you want a companion animal or a living room accessory? Of course you have to clean a cat box daily! Sheesh, people. I work at a shelter and I see cats brought in because they no longer match the new couch.
I have two of these litter boxes for my four boys–all 16-18 lb. cats. I clean both boxes daily and I’ve never had a problem with smell. I even have one crazy cat who only pees standing up…which means it hits the inside of the dome and runs down…and I don’t have leakage. I use wipes everyday on the inside of the dome for this problem and it keeps it clean. I wash the charcoal filters on occasion and change them once a twice a year. This box is big enough for even the big boys to fit in and stick their heads out.
I love the ramp; it keeps the box area tidy without the sprawl or mess of those old fashioned rectangular boxes and big litter trap pads. These Booda boxes are stylish enough to blend with the furniture in the living room. All of my catsitting friends have bought them also after taking care of my cats while I’m out of town.
There is a trick to cleaning them. I use a dustpan and broom to sweep the ramp and push loose litter into the dustpan. When scooping it works best to start from the middle and scoop outward. I also keep about 3″ of litter in the box, and as I said, I use household wet wipes to clean the rims and inside the dome. I have much less mess than traditional boxes, and less litter tracked outside the boxes too.
I belive Booda makes smaller domes too, so make sure you get the big one even for one cat, and if you have multiple cats, you should have multiple boxes. More than two cats to a box can cause problems, and definitely requires daily cleaning!
I’ve had several cats and tossing litter out of the box (even those with the curved in tops) has always been a problem. With our latest cat, it’s been a nightmare! This is the cat that plays fetch with herself by throwing her toys, she throws litter the same way.
So the box we’d been using for years, though oversized & with a curved lid wasn’t cutting it. Within a few days there would be more litter outside the box than in.
I researched a variety of boxes for several months before picking up this one. Now the litter that is tracked (very hairy paws) I can measure in teaspoons, not CUPS – I’m very happy with this. My cat also had never used a fully lidded box before, so I wasn’t sure how she would take to it. Luckily after only two days of leaving the lid off she wasn’t bothered by the top. The one I bought didn’t come with the carbon inset which didn’t bother me at all, frankly. That may have helped any shy-new-litter-box issues because of the “skylight” in it.
I too have noticed what seems to me to be irrational complaints by other owners of this box.
-If your box stinks, clean it. A plastic container of any size holding feline urine & feces isn’t going to change how said wastes smells. Depending on a piece of carbon or an air freshner to get rid of the smells isn’t rational.
-plastic bags tear. If your cat has claws then liners are pretty useless, IMHO.
-and yes – this box is BIG. It’s tall, it’s round, it takes up a lot of floor space so be prepared for it. You’re not going to be able to tuck this beside the toilet, under a coffee table, or in a little 18′ nook anywhere.
We have a new stray who was making a mess with his box — really going to town tossing the litter all over. After checking out several lidded boxes with hinges and doors that looked breakable, I went with the Booda Dome. I love the way the top just fits over the bottom, without any hinges, etc — it won’t break! The only thing that annoyed me is, there were several Booda Dome liners next to the Domes in the store, but they don’t fit the box. Apparently LARGE is not large enough, and there is a JUMBO size. The liner that came with the box fit fine, but the extra packs do not. I’m hoping the store will let me return them and they’ll have the size I need. Also not crazy about the fact that the litter scoop tears the plastic liner bags … it seemed to work with the liner that fit, but the scoop is shredding the small liners. Aside from that, it has certainly contained the litter for this messy barn cat, and there is no foul odor from the box. Great product!
I have two cats and they both use it. It does contain any smells if you use good litter. Litter falling outside the box is more contained but you need to vacuum the steps because they collect a lot. A previous reviewer mentioned that he had to create a false wall in the box right inside the opening in order to force the cats to walk down the stairs instead of jumping right out the opening. This spilled a lot of litter. I did this by cutting in half one of those flexible kitchen cutting mats and attached it with that gummy stuff you use to attach posters to walls. This has really helped to contain the litter on the stairs. I found you also need a rounded litter scooper. Square edged ones prevent you from cleaning around the edge of the box (since the box is rounded)if you don’t use liners.
I got tired of the litter all over the floor and this seemed like a good idea–I liked the stairs and the fact that it’s supposed to be relatively odor free. We only have one cat and it still smells pretty bad in there. The lid is really easy to pull off, I wish it latched somehow. My kitten has destroyed the liner as well, they should make them stronger. But it has stopped all litter from tracking through the house, which is really what I wanted it for.
I’ve got a geriatric cat with litter box issues and so far this has been the best box I’ve used with him. Here’s what I like about it:
- Low profile entry way with ramp
My cat Steve’s back legs and hips have been getting progressively weaker (he’s over 18) which makes it difficult for him to get up and over the lip of traditional litter boxes. The low entry way and ramp on the Booda are great for him to get in and out of the box easily.
- Big deep litter area
Steve also has kidney problems which necessitates subcutaneous fluid treatments to help flush his kidneys. This means he urinates frequently so the litter box fills up quickly. The Booda’s litter pan is big and deep so it can handle all the little stops he makes without getting too dirty.
- Hooded for cleanliness
We always kept our litter boxes in the basement, but once Steve was no longer able to navigate stairs easily he started to have accidents on the 1st & 2nd floors of our house. We decided to put a litter box in the dining room but it was always a big ugly mess. Litter would get everywhere and he would sometimes pee just outside the box even tho’ he was standing right in it (lots of fun). The Booda solves all this with its hooded design. Steve is fully “contained” in there and the dining room smells way, way better.
Still, there was one modification I needed to make:
- The ramp has undulating ridges with little plastic nodules on it to (theoretically) de-litter-ify cat feet. In practice however, Steve runs down the ramp as fast as possible (uncomfortable on his pads I imagine) and usually ends up slipping a bit. To fix this, I cut out a section of an old bath mat and covered the ramp with it. This gives him soft traction and also rubs the excess litter from his feet. Bath mats are perfect since they have rubber backing on them that grips the ramp and doesn’t slip down the incline. Also, when the mat gets dirty I can just throw it in the washer.
Altogether the Booda Dome has been a great find for Steve and I. He hasn’t thanked me outright, but I can sense he’s happier…
I have a 3 month old kitten who we started on with this box. She really loves that it is covered and hasn’t had one mistake (knock on wood). The litter does stay on the stairs, but that is what it is supposed to do. I have to do less vacuuming than with previous cats and previous litter boxes. It keeps the smell contained as well, which is good for our apartment. My only concern is that the litter liners do not seem to work that well. I can never get them to fit. Overall, though, a good purchase.
Our cat always just jumped over the side of the litter box, missing any ramps or mats meant to catch “crumbs” and scattering litter all over the bathroom.
This box solves that problem, with a little fixing up. Like other reviewers, I trimmed down a plastic cutting mat to fit across the gap where a wall ought to be, but isn’t. Perhaps the Booda people know about this fix, because there is slot at the top of the stairs where you can attach one end of the mat. Just poster taped the other end, and presto! we now have at least 90% better litter containment.
I do think Booda should either fix this problem or supply the plastic piece with purchase, given the price they charge. However, I’m willing to overlook one small problem since the rest of the box is great. It’s pretty attractive for a litter box, and the top lifts off easily for cleaning.
The trick to getting the top back on tightly is to slide the top into the groove on the outer edge of the stairs on first, then the one on the inside of the stairs, then push the back down until it is firmly attached. Once the lid is on correctly it isn’t going to just pop off when the cat bumps it – and I’m pretty sure ours is doing aerobics in there
My two kitties have a fondness of scratching whatever happens to be by their litter box while using it—considering the impossiblity of placing a litter box in the middle of the room, the Booda covered clean step greatly appealed to us.
I have no problems with the lid staying on, they can’t kick litter out–yay! However, a great deal gets on the ramp, and if you use the very small litter, it will still stick to the paws and get around.
The filter helps a great deal with the smell, but I agree with others on the difficulty of cleaning. Liners do not work, my kitties kick them into the rest of their mess within days, so trying to empty this round monstrosity into a trash bag is a nearly impossible, always disgusting undertaking. I often dump the whole thing over the fence into our alley, and then spray down with a dab of dishwashing liquid and a hose
I’ve had this box for over a year now, and my cats love it. I have three cats, who range in size from 8 to 13 pounds, and this is their preferred box. I agree that it requires a bit of maintenance – it’s not my only box, and I scoop at least once daily. Also, the paisley shape of the pan space makes it a challenge to scoop with a traditional U-shaped scoop. With the pan plus stairs and hood, it takes up a good bit of space. However, the stairs catch a lot of litter that would otherwise end up on my floor. I also have a 25 pound beagle mix dog, and he is unable to stick his head in a find a snack because of the way the stairs curve. Overall, this litter box meets the needs of all of my pets. I’m very happy with it and would recommend it to others.
It is a the best litter box so far for my 2 cats. As for the liner, I gave up on the Idea of a liner for a litter box over 20 years ago. Every cat I’ve had, friend’s with cats, relative’s with cats all don’t bother with liners, unless your cat is de-clawed. As for the flaw, the litter builds up at the bottom of the stairs, and there is no easy way to reclaim it, so I clean it when I vacuum. As for odor, it has a carbon filter at the top and I don’t smell a thing, with 2 cats. If you smell something with 1 cat, you may need to change your litter, or change your cat’s diet. Overall I love it! I’d give it a 4-1/2 if I could!
Unfortunately this litter box is much more visually appealing than anything else. I think I enjoyed it more than the cat, she always jumped into the box (avoiding the stairs completely) and then ripped the heck out of the dome liners, scratching them until they ripped, the liner sides hang over the stairway so she would try to bury the bag in the litter, causing a big mess and the stairs would always be covered it litter by the time she was done.
I think the idea of the box is smart but it just needs some tweaking, maybe if the stairs led right to the litter instead of sitting beside it, because I dont think cats really know to come out and go down and around to exit, as she would just jump out of the box from the litter, flinging litter bits as she went! Its funny but not at all tidy or practical.
It looks bigger then it is since the stairs are within the dome. My cats bump the cover when they move inside and sometimes the lid comes off slighly and number ones hit the liner and leak out the side…definately not good.
They do love the privacy, but I am constantly worrying that the top won’t stay secure.
I have two of these for my two cats – I liked the fact that it is a covered box. However, like a previous reviewer said, it needs to latch down. The entrance is awkward, and litter does accumulate there. I have NOT noticed any less litter being tracked around the house. If you intend to buy this one to cut down on tracking, keep looking!
I read about this litter box and did my research for months before I finally purchased it. I was thrilled by the reviews stating that is controlled the smell, and that it controlled the spill of litter onto the floor. Boy were they wrong….I dont know what those people are doing so differently….but I still have a pile of litter on the floor at the bottom of the stairs. You can still smell everything, and I have to clean it twice as much, because the cats have a limited area to enter the box, and otherwise they would be stepping on poop everytime they got in. I was going to purchase another of the same box if I liked the performance of this one, but I doubt I will now. Other than looking cool, its nothing special. The liners that fit it also do not stay in the hook and rip easily.
As an owner of three cats, my wife and I were not pleased with our open-air shallow litter box. We are sure to scoop at least once daily to remove the odor from our laundry room and to keep the kitties happy with a clean box. Unfortunately, one of our cats, in particular, seems to enjoy kicking litter as hard as he can, the result of which was piles of litter on the floor that would then get kicked and tracked around the tile floor. None of the various rugs or mats we bought was capable of containing the mess.
Frustrated, we went to the local pet store to look for a closed litter box to reduce the potential for kicked litter mess and to lessen the inevitable smell. I put no price on products that ease litter box maintenance, so we didn’t hesitate to spend three times as much as the typical shallow litter pan on this ’specialty’ box.
The design, at first, seemed flawless. The litter stayed in the box, very few granules found their way onto the floor, and the mat in front of the stair case was able to keep up with those that did. I noticed very little odor control improvement, even with the supplied filter, but we were happy with the litter control. Five months later, however, it wasn’t “working” as described; Buddy, the messy cat, had begun to kick litter down onto the stairs, which would then inevitably spill out and make a mess. It became part of the daily routine to completely clean out the stairs due to all the litter accumulation.
Last week was when we started finding pee in the stair case. Trust me, we keep the thing as clean as possible – I even completely washed out the box thinking that if I removed the odor from the stairs with cleaner they’d quit doing it. Nope. Then they began peeing in the stairs first, then scooping litter out to soak it up. Talk about a mess. I’m fine with scooping daily – but not with that nasty chore.
Another terrible design flaw is the two corners of the litter area are impossible to scoop – and of course, our kitties loved using the corners. Even our narrow scoop didn’t fit the contours of the corner, resulting in broken clumps and more frustration.
A typical box-design enclosed litter box works far better and provides more litter space as well. I’d have to refrain from recommending this product.
I bought one of these a few months ago with the hope that my two cats would stop flinging litter all over the kitchen. One of them has a tendency to leap out of the box when he’s finished his business, while the other digs as if she’s on her way to China. We had a normal square covered box at first, but I figured this would solve the problem.
It did, for a while.
Like the other reviewers, however, I do notice that the box needs another wall at the entrance. The box itself is also far too small for two cats and needs to be scooped on a daily basis; even with the odor control panel, it stinks up my apartment (sometimes even when it’s scooped daily!). The top of the box does not latch on to the bottom, meaning that with enthusiastic diggers, it gets nudged off the bottom…leading to cat waste outside the box thanks to them backing up against the walls. Even with the litter liners, this thing is a pain.
I’m on my way to get a new box today to replace this one. It’s a shame, I had such hope for it!
This is no were like the Boda max that was truly order free. Cats use it littler gets on the steps and floor box smells .No matter what kind of litter you use. Even if you scoop each day like I do. Not worth the money. Please bring the boda max back.
I have had this product now for 4 months and I find it worse than the traditional style. Maybe my two cats make more of a mess than others but this thing needs constant cleaning. Also with normal litter scoops you can’t get to everything in the rounded corners. The steps save most litter from the floor but some still gets out and they have litter on them constantly. I don’t see where this is any better than products that cost 1/2 the price.
Meh. The cats don’t use the stairs – they both just jump over the side wall into the litter. They kick litter onto the stairs then pee on the stairs which are a pain to clean. I moved recently and just threw this litter box out – we’ll have a fresh start with something more basic. Plusses though – it is HUGE – plenty of room for my big ol Ragdoll kitty.
This box is great looking, but a pain in the functionality department.
It looks huge. We thought it’d be great for our two cats. However, the rounded edges on the bottom and stairs result in less than half the litter area of a square box of the same size. It’s also difficult to fit into the corner of a room, and you’ll have to have a lot of floor space to put the lid down while you’re cleaning the box out. You really have to have a large space to dedicate this box to, like a basement, it won’t fit in a medium or small bathroom.
The curved edges are extremely difficult to scrape, you’ll end up with clumping litter stuck to the rounded edges that you have to scrape off piece by piece.
Cleaning out the entire box is a nightmare – the curved edges and huge size mean you have to hug it to pour litter into a bag, and it’s too large to pour easily into a large garbage bag.
The stairs are useless unless you build your own wall inside the box, since the cat will jump right over them to get to the litter. As expensive as this box is, we shouldn’t have to tinker with the box to get it to work.
The stairs don’t release litter easily, and don’t catch litter from cats paws the way you’d want them to. Our cats kick the litter right onto the stairs, where it sits there, wasted. You have to scrape the curved steps with a cup, or vacuum them, which is more trouble than just sweeping the floor in front of a regular box. I also have noticed the same amount of litter outside of it as with a regular box.
We often have to pull the whole thing away from the wall and sweep up all the litter that fell out the back. Since there are no square corners, lining up the lid of the box up with the bottom is difficult, and I often have to check and double check to make sure both the front and the back of the box are fitted properly. The box can easily look like the lid is on snug in front when it’s misaligned in the back, which gives the cats a huge hole to kick litter out of.
And as mentioned by previous reviews, don’t even bother with the liners, they don’t stand up to scratching.
I suppose the box doesn’t smell after one or two days, but I attribute that to using the correct litter and cleaning the box out often enough. After three days with two cats and high quality litter, you’ll smell it. It does have a charcoal filter for the top, but it also has a huge gaping door, so the charcoal doesn’t catch all of the fumes.
-The liners are not big enough for the box.
-the odor filters are no help
-the ad states there is a handle..but it does not firmly attach to the sides so you cant pick the bottom and top up with the handle..just the lid only…
-the traditional cat box with handle and side attachements are much easier to empty.
-stairs were a bonus, but not for all the yucky mess that goes with cleaning this huge unhelpful box.
I got this for my cat to help keep the house clean, but this new litter box was a problem because it was to small.
